Materials and techniques of Art Nouveau architecture in Italy and Portugal: a first insight for an European route to consistent restoration
The results of the investigations on building materials and techniques of Casa Major Pessoa, a typical Art
Nouveau construction in Aveiro (Portugal), and two coeval Art Nouveau buildings in Bologna (Italy) are presented
as a methodological contribution to the restoration of this kind of buildings. This is the first step to
ascertain the existence of a common thread between local materials, technologies and architecture in European
countries at the same period. A holistic approach was adopted: materials were investigated along with
architectural, structural and technological features, in order to achieve a first insight into the Art Nouveau
architecture in Europe in particular for its consistent restoration without loss of historical memory
Destination Governance for Sustainable Tourism
The tourism system is characterised by the number of actors (public, profit, and non-profit organisations) with
specific expectations, roles, and responsibilities. The actors play a significant role in the territory: they need the
efforts of inter-institutional cooperation and to develop a network in order to contribute, in relation to the type of
interaction carried out, to the economic development and to increasing competitiveness and tourism labor market.
In this article, the author suggests a conceptual framework allowing attaining a governance model of the tourism
system aimed at enhancing the relationships with the various relevant actors in order to achieve common goals
based on sustainable performanc
Changing incentives to publish
Many national governments have implemented policies providing incentives for researchers to publish, especially in highly ranked international journals. Although still the top publishing nation, the United States has seen its share of publications decline from 34.2% in 1995 to 27.6% in 2007 as the number of articles published by U.S. scientists and engineers has plateaued and that of other countries has grown (1, 2). Hicks (3) argues that the two events are not unrelated: The decline in the relative performance of the United States relates to increased international competition engendered by newly adopted incentives that have crowded out some work by U.S. author
The organization, economics, and policy of scientific research: what we do know and what we don't know--an agenda for research
The knowledge and instruments developed in recent years have paved the way to a substantial contribution from economics to support political and social decision making in matters of scientific progress, such as efficient funding, institutional settings, and allocation. We review the progress made in recent years and predict future directions. Copyright 2011 The Author 2011. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Associazione ICC. Flavia Franzoni nella crescita del servizio sociale italiano
The article discusses some aspects of Flavia Franzoni’s contribution to the development of social work in Italy. In particular, it shows the important teaching and research function of the Schools of Social Service, where she worked, both in the years when the training of social workers was still outside the university and in later years. Some occasions of study and debate that the author witnessed are reported to highlight Franzoni’s skills and personal style in accompanying the growth of many generations of social workers. Franzoni’s intellectual contribution is framed in the broader historical and cultural context of social service and social policies in Italy, devoting more attention to the evolution of social service schools, in order to highlight the spaces of innovation, research and social promotion in which Franzoni was able to develop her commitment
SAFA: A new measure to evaluate psychiatric symptoms detected in a sample of children and adolescents affected by eating disorders. Correlations with risk factors
In order to evaluate the psychiatric symptoms associated with a diagnosis of eating disorders (ED) we have administered a new psychometric instument: the Self Administrated Psychiatric Scales for Children and Adolescents (SAFA) test. SAFA was administered to a cohort of 97 patients, aged from 8.8 to 18, with an ED diagnosis. Age, body mass index (BMI) and BMI standard deviation score were analyzed. Furthermore, while looking for linkable risk factors, we evaluated other data that took an influence over the SAFA profile, like parental separation and family components' number. Compared to the range of statistical normality (based on Italian population), patients with bulimia nervosa or binge-eating disorder showed higher and pathologic values in specific subscales. When analyzing sex, males showed more pathologic values in most anxiety-related, obsessiveness-compulsiveness-related and insecurity subscales. A correlation among age, BMI and specific subscales (low self esteem, psychological aspects) emerged in participants with anorexia nervosa. In order to plan more appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in children or adolescents suffering from ED, the SAFA test can be an important instrument to evaluate psychiatric symptoms. Therefore, we propose to include this useful, simple self-administered test as a new screening tool for ED diagnosis
Sulle tracce di Attis ad Aquileia
The aim of this article is to highlight the issues concerning the interpretation of documents referring to Attis and his cult in Aquileia. The author focuses on two of the main problems in the study of archaeological documentation: the over-reading of the image and its function. The analysis of the iconographical components of the figure of Attis shows the extreme versatility of the image of the oriental sheperd and highlights how complex it can be to assign a name to that image without any advice provided by the context. Not each oriental sheperd does represent Attis; more over, an image of Attis does not suffice to confirm the practice of his cult in one site
Cibele e Apollo su un'ara da Celeia
The attention of the author is focused on the relationship between Cybele and Apollo
on a votive altar found in the territory of the ancient Celeia. The presence of symbols
referring both to the anatolian goddess and to the oracular deity on the sides of the
monument was considered from scholars as an evidence of a symbiosis between these
particular healing deities. However, the lack of close comparisons for this exclusive
association with respect to other figurative documents in the roman world leads to a
review of the monument. The considering of the altar from a different prospective and
the research of connection between metroac and apollonian cult on an historical level
suggest an alternative interpretation for the presence of tripod and other symbols of
Apollo on the altar

Sensitivity analysis for buckling characterisation using the vibration correlation technique
The Vibration Correlation Technique (VCT) is a non-destructive method to predict buckling loads for imperfection-sensitive structures. While successfully used to validate numerical models and predict experimental buckling loads, recommendations for defining the VCT experiment are scarce. Here, its sensitivity towards the number of load steps and the maximum load level measured is studied, and an uncertainty quantification of the measured frequency affecting the VCT prediction is performed First, a series of finite element (FE) models representing nominally identical cylinders, and validated by buckling experiments, are used to perform a sensitivity study. When no frequency deviations are introduced in the FE results, a positive correlation between the VCT predictions and the maximum load used for measurements is found, the number of load steps used being only relevant in reducing the errors. Introducing frequency deviations deterred the predictions correlation with the maximum load, while using more load steps reduced this influence. Second, a sensitivity study based on experimental data confirmed most of the trends previously observed using the FE results, the exception being a poor prediction sensitivity as a function of the maximum load, owing to several cylinders for which the VCT method gave predictions that progressively decreased with increasing the load.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Aerospace Structures & Computational Mechanic
