Cultural Explorations of Human Intelligence Around the World

The goal of this article is to review cultural explorations of human intelligence around the globe. The article opens in the first part with a consideration of cultural studies that suggest that there is more to intelligence than IQ. It continues with the suggestion for what that more might be, namely, successful intelligence. The second part of the article thus describes the theory of successful intelligence, as well as data from various cultures that support the theory. The third part of the article considers cultural conceptions, of implicit theories of intelligence. It is concluded that cultural studies suggest that conventional notions of intelligence are narrow and limited

Leopold Sternberg, the life of Austria-Hungarian aristocrat during the 20th century

    No full text
This dissertation depicts a life of Leopold Sternberg who was representative of one of the most significant Czech genus. The author of this thesis focused on his personality, war experience, and social activities as well as on a circle of his closest associates. She also focused on the fate of his siblings who until now were overlooked by researchers. This dissertation tracks the condition of family property during dramatic historical changes in the first half of the 20th century when they were often found out of the ownership of Sternberg family. We are talking about the first land reformation, the forced management during Nazi era and the nationalization after the Communist putsch in Czechoslovakia. The thesis focuses on Leopold's activities in the time of Nazi threat when he clearly registered to the Czech State. Some part of the thesis is dedicated to the American ambassador in Czechoslovakia Laurence A. Steinhardt. His fate was closely connected to at one point with the Sternberg one. The author has tried to profile the fate of Leopold Sternberg and his family after moving in abroad where he died in 1957. Self-harm and the harm of others in adolescents

    No full text
Maintaining a simultaneous sense of oneself as a victim and perpetrator is not a straightforward task for the patient or for the professionals working with them. In this chapter, the author compares his work with an adolescent boy who repeatedly raped his sister and an adolescent girl who made a serious suicide attempt and who was seen as a vulnerable victim. In psychoanalytic terms, the word ‘perversion’ is used descriptively to refer to erotic activity that does not have as its aim genital sexuality. The author uses two clinical examples, Pietr and Zoe, as illustrations. Pietr’s psychotherapy was, in its early stages, characterized by material in which he was a victim of a situation in which he felt he had been misunderstood and unappreciated. Zoe’s suicide attempt, a major drug overdose, took place at the seaside town where her family owned a holiday home

Differences in Nuclear DNA Organization Between Lymphocytes, Hodgkin and Reed–Sternberg Cells Revealed by Structured Illumination Microscopy

    No full text
Advances in light microscopy have enabled the visualization of DNA in the interphase nucleus with more detail than is visible with conventional light microscopy. The nuclear architecture is assumed to be different in cancer cells compared to normal cells. In this paper we have studied, for the first time, the organization of nuclear DNA and that of DNA-free space in control lymphocytes, Hodgkin cells and Reed–Sternberg cells using 3D structured illumination microscopy (SIM). We have observed detail in these SIM images that was not observed in conventional widefield images. We have measured the size distribution of the DNA structure using granulometry and noted a significant, progressive increase in the amount of sub-micron structures from control lymphocytes to Hodgkin cells to Reed–Sternberg cells. The DNA-free space changes as well; “holes” in the DNA distribution start to appear in the malignant cells. We have studied whether these “holes” are nucleoli by staining for upstream binding factor (UBF), a protein associated with the nucleolus. We have found that the relative UBF content progressively and significantly decreases—or is absent—in the DNA-free space when measured as either the Pearson correlation coefficient with the DNA-free space or as the number of “holes” that contain UBF. Similar differences exist within the population of Reed–Sternberg cells between binucleated and multinucleated cells with four or more subnuclei. To our knowledge, this is the first study that investigates the changes of the nuclear DNA structure in any disease with superresolution light microscopy. J. Cell.
