Interview with Sterling H. Emerson
An interview in three sessions, in March and April 1979, with Sterling Howard Emerson, professor of genetics, emeritus, in the Division of Biology. Dr. Emerson came to Caltech in 1928 as an assistant professor in the division, newly established under Thomas Hunt Morgan. He discusses his youth in Lincoln, Nebraska, and attendance at Cornell (BS, 1922), where his father, horticulturalist Rollins A. Emerson, taught plant genetics. Graduate work at the University of Michigan (PhD 1928). He recalls the early days of genetics after the rediscovery of Mendelism: meeting Columbia geneticists Morgan, A. H. Sturtevant, Calvin Bridges; H. J. Muller at Cold Spring Harbor (summer 1921); recruitment of Caltech’s biologists under Morgan; the Biology Council (1942-1946) running the division after Morgan’s retirement; the advent of George Beadle; his work with the AEC’s Division of Biology and Medicine (1955-1957); Morgan’s relationship with Caltech head R. A. Millikan; interaction with Linus Pauling. Memories of Sturtevant, Frits Went, Ernest Anderson, Robert Emerson, Henry Borsook, Albert Tyler, James Bonner, Norman Horowitz, C. A. G. Wiersma, A. J. Haagen-Smit, Roger Sperry. Discussion of his own work, chiefly on genetic recombination and adaptive changes in Oenothera and Neurospora
MSS 0097, Item 0027 - Journal of H. A. Emerson
H. A. Emerson kept this diary from January 1 to December 29, recording aspects of his job as the proprietor of the paper mill in Franklin, Massachusetts. Emerson wrote about his daily activities at the paper mill, including quantity and type of paper produced, as well as machinery maintenance and efficiency, and number of hours Emerson worked. Almost every entry mentions the weather of the day, sometimes describing how weather hindered production at the paper mill. Emerson was involved in the local church choir and frequently mentions it in his journal. Other entries describe social life in Franklin and other nearby Massachusetts and New England towns, as well as family visits, brief references to national political affairs, alluding to the ongoing Civil War.http://www.lib.udel.edu/static/purl.php?mss0097_002

Symbolic solution of Emerson-Lei games
Emerson-Lei games have received a lot of focus in recent research. It was only
recently that the first symbolic solver algorithm for these games was introduced. As
such there has not yet been any implemented game solvers for such games. In this
thesis we introduce the first symbolic solver for Emerson-Lei games based on Genie
and FairSyn, two game solving tools for Rabin games. We evaluate the performance
of our game solver for different types of games, and compare it to FairSyn for
Rabin games specifically. Further, as to motivate the practical use of such a solver,
we revisit reductions from alternation free μ-calculus to Büchi games and give a
reduction formulated using the notation we give for Emerson-Lei games. Based on
this reduction we define certificates which we used to argue the correctness of the
reduction
