Antibacterial Properties of Nanoparticles: A Comparative Review of Chemically Synthesized and Laser-Generated Particles
No full textNanomaterials have recently received an enormous amount of attention from the scientific community due to their outstanding activity relative to bulk materials. This increase in activity relative to bulk materials can be attributed to the high surface area to volume ratio associated with nanoparticles. Nanoparticles have found applications in almost every field of science. Currently there is significant interest in the development of nanoparticles as antibacterial agents. This work is paramount due to the increasing number of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Nanoparticles can be synthesized using various methods, each with their own advantages and disadvantages, and the method is often chosen based on the intended application. This review will cover the most prevalent method, chemical-based reduction of salts, and a fairly new laser-based method that holds tremendous promise in nanoparticle synthesis. We conclude with a comparison of the antimicrobial activities of materials made via each method.Peer reviewe
The ecclesiastical abyss: religious masses and the work, analyses in Eric Voegelin and Eric Weil
No full textThis work proposes a dialogue between Eric Voegelin and Eric Weil, addressing the context of the Second World War and the Nazification process of Germany. Our trained authors present topics that are extremely current and relevant to the contemporary debate, that is, the relationship between Church and State. Eric Voegelin reflects in his lectures the support that Hitler received from the main Christian traditions in Germany, from Protestants and Catholics. It is observed that at the time, as Voegelin points out, there was a descent into the abyss of German society in all segments, even in the ecclesiastical context, considering that the German people were a parochial people. The same author points out how religious leaders used the Bible and tradition to support their political support for Hitler. In Eric Weil, it is about the attitude-category of the work, a manifestation of pure violence and how the man in the work presents himself, the one who intends nothing other than violence, to carry out the work. Such perspectives are related to the point of thinking about the current Brazilian context, how the religious and State spheres are closely related, where religious discourses in the Christian environment have perverse political ends. The paths and efforts to maintain democracy are also highlightedO presente trabalho propõe uma interlocução entre Eric Voegelin e Eric Weil, abordando o contexto da segunda guerra mundial e o processo de nazificação da Alemanha. Nos autores estudados apresenta-se temas extremamente atuais e relevantes para o debate contemporâneo, isto é, a relação da Igreja e Estado e o papel das massas. Eric Voegelin reflete em suas preleções o apoio que Hitler recebera das principais tradições cristãs na Alemanha, os protestantes e católicos. Observa-se que na ocasião, como aponta Voegelin, há uma descida ao abismo da sociedade alemã em todos os segmentos, até mesmo no contexto eclesiástico, considerando que o povo alemão era um povo paroquial. Aponta-se a partir do mesmo autor, como as lideranças religiosas se utilizavam da Bíblia e da tradição para respaldar seu apoio político a Hitler. Em Eric Weil, trata-se da categoria-atitude da obra, manifestação da pura violência e de como se apresenta o homem da obra, aquele cujas intenções não são outras, a não ser, violência, a realização da obra. Irradiation with visible light enhances the antibacterial toxicity of silver nanoparticles produced by laser ablation
No full textThe rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a rapidly growing global health concern. According to the Center for Disease Control, approximately 2 million illnesses and 23,000 deaths per year occur in the USA due to antibiotic resistance. In recent years, there has been a surge in the use of metal nanoparticles as coatings for orthopedic implants, wound dressings, and food packaging, due to their antimicrobial properties. In this report, we demonstrate that the antibacterial efficacy of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is enhanced with exposure to light from the visible spectrum. We find that the increased toxicity is due to augmented silver ion release and bacterial uptake. Interestingly, silver ion toxicity does not appear to depend on the formation of reactive oxygen species. Our findings provide a novel paradigm for using light to regulate the toxicity of AgNPs which may have a significant impact in the development of new antimicrobial therapeutics.Peer reviewe
Sexual health knowledge of adolescents from different neighborhoods
No full textThe present study used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) to estimate the associations of gender to neighborhood sexual health knowledge of 2,808 adolescents. Using multiple regression analyses, we controlled for characteristics such as race, family income, parental education, and neighborhood poverty. We found these factors had modest negative effects on sexual health knowledge. The interaction of gender and average neighborhood sexual health knowledge score showed that girls had higher levels of sexual health knowledge than boys and that their sexual knowledge scores were more affected by neighborhood averages.M.A.Includes bibliographical referencesby Eric William Brannin
Development of hydrogen-bonding catalysts for the kinetic resolution of amines via anion-binding
No full textMethods development for chiral primary amine synthesis remains a challenge with efficient processes being quite limited. Outlined within this dissertation is the optimization of a bifunctional-hydrogen-bonding catalyzed aldol reaction between imides and aldehydes to produce highly enantioenriched β-hydroxy-α-amino acids. The main objective for the thesis work is the development of a new anion-binding approach for the kinetic resolution of amines. In the presence of an achiral nucleophilic co-catalyst, a chiral hydrogen-bonding catalyst, and benzoic anhydride, a chiral ion pair is presumably formed allowing for the efficient resolution of amines. The major challenges are outlined as well the successful extension to the resolution of benzylic amines. The work was further expanded to the more synthetically useful propargylic amines, while increasing the overall selectivities by designing and synthesizing a new chiral amide-thiourea catalyst for the study. Lastly, the more nucleophilic allylic amines were resolved in good selectivities by using PPY as the achiral co-catalyst.Ph. D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Eric George Klaube
On Fernando's Photograph: The Biopolitics of Aparicion in Contemporary Argentina
No full textThis article concerns the striking photograph of a young man, Fernando Brodsky, taken shortly after he was kidnapped in Argentina in 1979. Brodsky was detained in the notorious Escuela de la Armada (ESMA) in Buenos Aires, and remains disappeared. The negative of the photograph was smuggled out of ESMA and the image became part of a bundle of photographic evidence submitted by families of the disappeared during the trials of the military after the return to democracy in 1983. This article seeks to under- stand the vitality of the photograph, the different courses it takes, the archives it joins and leaves, asking: ‘What sort of life can the photograph have? What sort of desire? What sort of politics?’ The article proposes that we might consider the role of such images ‘biopolitically’, which is to say in the context of the relations established through the attempts to govern populations in times of military rule and in times of transitional democracy. The re-appearance of Fernando in the photograph is part of post-dictator- ship politics in which the demand ‘aparición’ resounds. Fernando, an absolute witness who does not, who cannot, speak nevertheless re-appears in the law courts and in art exhibitions. The article considers the difference between the photograph’s appearance as evidence and its reappearance in the art galleries, arguing that its ‘desires’ can be imagined differently in each. The article argues that while the photograph does not escape archives tout court, in raising the question of how it should be filed, it prompts reflec- tion on the biopolitical present, with its inequitable distribution of life and security among populations. This is a politics of the present, more than it is a politics of memory
