An experimental procedure to study the impact of animal burrows on existing levee structures
Animal burrows have been reported to cause extensive damage to existing levees and other earthen structures in different parts of the world. In this study a centrifuge model that has been designed to investigate the impact of animal burrows on the performance of an existing earthen structure is described. The proposed methodology simulates animal burrows in an earthen structure by introducing cylindricalshaped openings inside a pre-designed model. A homogenous levee with 1:1 side slopes and a horizontal toe drain was chosen for this preliminary investigation. The steps taken to construct the model and the effect of the adopted burrow simulation technique on the model performance are discussed. Crest settlement was measured before and after the burrow introduction and during the increase in water level to failure. Conclusions regarding the adequacy of the adopted technique are made
Many-electron theory of resonant charge transfer: Role of surface states in He and He+ scattering off Si(100)
A many-electron theory of resonant charge transfer, originally formulated for the scattering of an atom with an empty valence orbital from a surface, is extended to treat the case where the valence orbital is initially occupied by one or two electrons. The scattering of He and He+ from the Si(001) surface is investigated. The interaction is assumed to be with the narrow band of surface states, and not the much wider bulk band. The investigation of animal burrows in levees: Using experimental data to develop a probabilistic model that aims to improve the efficiency of manual inspection of animal burrows on levees
Animal-induced anomalies on a levee surface negatively affect the erosion-resistance of a levee, leading to rapid failure of the inner slope in case of overtopping and/or overflow during high water. Where active prevention techniques of burrows from large animals, such as muskrats, are applied in and around levees in the Netherlands, the identification of smaller burrow holes made by voles and moles and the evaluation of the severity of the damage rely solely on the assessment and experience of the levee inspector. The Polder2C’s project aims to quantitively assess the impact of animal burrows on the levee surface by conducting experiments at the Living Lab Hedwige and Prosper Polder (LHPP) and this thesis aims to contribute in this by analyzing the experiment results and developing a model for levee inspection that includes uncertainties of the geometrical characteristics of vole and mole burrow systems. This thesis distinguishes two phases, the first of which focuses on the question: ‘How do animal burrows influence levee performance?’, and it aims to form a foundation for the second phase of the report by focusing on the behavior of burrowing animals and the geometrical characteristics of their burrows by conducting a literature review on existing research on this topic. Guidelines were set up that contribute to the identification of mole and vole burrow system by investigating the main differences between them, with the aim to easily identify separate burrow hole groups in the experiment data. These conclusions could then be used to identify different vole and mole burrow hole groups in data that was collected from several experiments at the Living Lab Hedwige and Prosper Polder (LLHPP) between October 2021 and February 2022 and answer the research question for the second phase, which was: ‘Based on data from levee inspection experiments, which probabilistic model can assess the inspection success rate of animal burrows?’.Civil Engineering | Hydraulic Engineerin
Artificial burrows with basal chambers are preferred by pygmy bluetongue lizards, Tiliqua adelaidensis
Author version made available in accordance with the Publisher's policyNatural refuges are sometimes supplemented with artificial refuges to enhance populations of endangered species, or to improve the success of translocation and relocation programs. The design and structure of these artificial structures should incorporate key features of natural refuges. We aimed to improve the design of artificial burrows currently used in the conservation of the pygmy bluetongue lizard, Tiliqua adelaidensis, by comparing burrows with or without a basal chamber. We found that lizards chose burrows with chambers significantly more often, but that neither the size of the chamber, nor the substrate lining the chamber influenced the choice. Incorporating a basal chamber into the design of artificial burrows should provide more favourable artificial refuges for these lizards and should be incorporated into future conservation management programs
Union in Obscurity: Ruth Burrows’ Contributions to Developments in Mystical Theology
This thesis seeks to support and synthesize the claims of Carmelite Nun and contemporary author, Ruth Burrows. Across her writings, Burrows contends that a lack of flowering of the mystical life in the Church today results from a false typification of mysticism as both linear and bench-marked by sensible signs. Burrows argues this imbalanced view has stunted the spiritual growth of many, due to false expectations and discouragement. Rather, Burrows asserts that the normative experience of Divine Union is given both obscurely and intangibly (“light off”), whereas the sensible and conventional sense of mysticism is both rare and didactic in purpose (“light on”). Burrows’ arguments are evaluated chiefly in dialogue with St. Thomas Aquinas and St. John of the Cross. Burrows’ case for a didactic “Light On” mysticism is best understood as gratia gratis data, specifically as an expression of the prophetic charism. “Light Off” is explored through a closer examination of St. John of the Cross’s writings, where a reconsideration of sensate imagery in light of his doctrine of obscure faith reveals a mystical marriage more in support of Burrows’ conception. This claim is further strengthened when compared with St. Thomas Aquinas’ treatise on faith. An incarnational case for the two modes of mystical life is made through an analysis of St. Elizabeth of the Trinity (“Light on”) and St. Therese of Lisieux (“Light off”). Burrows’ theology stands the test of scrutiny, though not without limitations: research remains to be done on the function of the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit in Burrows’ mystical theology. Additionally, when pushed to its furthest limits, Burrows’ commitment to obscure union risks a radical disjunct between the perceiver (the soul) and the object perceived (God Himself). Nonetheless, should spiritual theology undergo a ressourcement as did systematic and moral theology, the theology of Ruth Burrows offer important contributions
