    Heart rate variability biofeedback for college students recovering from substance use disorder: a longitudinal analysis of craving changes

    Purpose: The purpose of this dissertation was to provide longitudinal evidence on heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) as an anti-craving intervention for college students recovering from substance use disorder (SUD). Methods: Previous studies showed promise of the therapeutic potential of HRVB to reduce substance craving. Gaps in the literature indicated the need for a longitudinal examination of craving changes that takes individual differences into consideration. Data from 46 college students recovering from SUD were used to examine craving changes before and during an eight-session HRVB intervention. Participants were assessed at four occasions in the control condition over the first 12 weeks followed by 8 occasions in the experimental condition, separated by an 11-week rest period. A longitudinal multilevel modeling approach was used with time at level-1 nested within persons at level-2. Unconditional and conditional multilevel models of change were estimated to model craving trajectories and predictor relationships over time. Results: Significant reductions in substance craving were observed during HRVB compared to waitlist. HRVB seemed to enhance the efficacy of conventional therapies by producing craving reductions that were not evident prior to the HRVB intervention despite usual treatment. A continued daily HRVB practice of more than 12 minutes was found to enhance treatment as usual outcomes and contribute to greater craving reductions over time. In our sample, younger participants seemed to be more committed to daily HRVB practice, although many did not achieve the recommended daily practice of 15 minutes twice daily. Increases in depressive symptoms were found to attenuate the effects of HRVB on craving. Anxiety and perceived stress were not significantly associated with craving in this study. The true R2 for the final model indicated that 20.5% of the variance in craving was explained by age, daily HRVB >12 minutes, and the within-person aspect of depression. Conclusions: HRVB is an easily accessible and affordable intervention that shows promise as a complementary anti-craving intervention. The outcomes of this study have implications for hypothesized HRVB practice-dose relationships.      This article is part of a contribution to highlighting the intellectual production of the Algerian thinker and renowned writer, outside the Maghreb borders, Malek Bennabi. This is a listing established by the texts of Nour Eddine Boukrouh, an admirer and enthusiast of Bennabian thought. Not being exhaustive, this list presents only the works published by the former Minister of Commerce. This list will partially complete the work of Mouloud Aouimer, author of a bibliographical work, listing the writings, in the national language, on Malek Bennabi (1905-1973). By devoting this contribution to the work of Nour Eddine Boukrouh, we intend to resume the synthesis of all university work, without forgetting the published proceedings of scientific meetings including colloquia, seminars and study days.Cet article entre dans le cadre d’une contribution à la mise en avant de la production intellectuelle du penseur algérien et écrivain de réputation, hors des frontières maghrébines, Malek Bennabi. N’étant pas exhaustive, cette liste présente uniquement les travaux publiés par l’ancien Ministre du Commerce.     Lysine degradation by ruminal Fusobacteriumnecrophorum

    Three experiments were conducted to characterize lysine fermentation by Fusobacterium necrophorum, a ruminal bacterium that is known to degrade amino acids. In Experiment 1, 7 strains of Fusobacterium necrophorum were inoculated into media containing lysine (50 mM), lactate (50 mM), or lysine plus lactate (50 mM each) as the major energy substrate to evaluate growth and ammonia production. All strains grew with lysine, lactate, or lactate plus lysine as the primary substrate. When grown with lysine, all strains produced ammonia as an end product, even if lactate was also present. Smaller concentrations of ammonia for medium containing lactate plus lysine when compared with lysine alone indicate that the Fusobacterium strains used lactate as a growth substrate that stimulated utilization of ammonia. In Experiment 2, the 2 strains tested were able to degrade extensively both lysine and glutamic acid. Some evidence was detected for partial utilization for growth of histidine, methionine, and tryptophan by strain A21. In Experiment 3, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the antibiotic tylosin was 25 μg/mL when Fusobacterium necrophorum strains A21 and B35 were grown in either lysine or lactate-enriched medium. The MIC of monensin was 6.25 and 3.9 μg/mL for strains A21 and B35, respectively, when grown in lysine-enriched medium, but\u3e50 and 10.9 μg/mL when the strains were grown in lactate-enriched medium. Kuwait, having undergone massive infrastructure developments after the discovery of oil, is considered a prime example of an automobile-dependent city-state in the region. Public transportation is irregular and limited and has been traditionally aimed at the lower-class migrant population rather than the residents of the country as a whole. Planning and regulating for the existing public transportation is minimal and siloed. Against this background, this thesis evaluates the current state of public transportation in Kuwait and develops a framework to assess industry structure models for the regulation of public transportation. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh are used as cases representing a unified public model, closely supervised private model, and loosely supervised private model, respectively. Using the framework and the cases, it recommends the adoption of the closely supervised private model for the Kuwaiti context. This thesis also provides five recommendations on how to push for regulatory change for KuwaitCommute, a local social initiative intent on bringing awareness to Kuwait's public transportation system and the country's traffic epidemic.     Bulk (100) scandium nitride crystal growth by sublimation on tungsten single crystal seeds

Applied Physics Letters, 113(12), 122106. https://doi.org/10.1063/1.5051457Scandium nitride single crystals (14–90 μm thick) were grown on a tungsten (100) single crystal substrate by physical vapor transport in the temperature range of 1850 °C–2000 °C and pressure of 15–35 Torr. Epitaxial growth was confirmed using in-plane ϕ scan and out-of-plane x-ray diffraction techniques which revealed that ScN exhibits cube-on-cube growth with a plane relationship ScN (001) ǁ W (001) and normal direction ScN [100] ǁ W [110]. Atomic force microscopy revealed that the surface roughness decreased from 83 nm to 18 nm as the growth temperature was increased. The x-ray diffraction rocking curve (XRC) widths decreased with temperature, indicating that the crystal quality improved as the growth temperature increased. The lowest XRC FWHM was 821 arcsec which is so far the lowest value reported for ScN. Scanning electron microscopy exhibited the formation of macrosteps and cracks on the crystal surface with the latter due to the mismatch of ScN and tungsten coefficients of thermal expansion

    Bioavailability of lysine from hydroxymethyl lysine

    Twelve mature sheep were used as a ruminant model to estimate the bioavailability of lysine in hydroxymethyl lysine (HML) compared with a commercial product of rumen-protected lysine (RPL; LysiPEARL, Kemin Industries, Inc.) with known availability. The sheep were fed a diet with a forage to concentrate ratio similar to that of dairy diets. Following a control period in which plasma lysine was measured when sheep received no supplemental lysine, the sheep were provided 2 of 4 treatments during periods 2 and 3; treatments included RPL to provide 3 or 6 g/day of available lysine (actual amounts of product provided were based on the manufacturer\u27s data related to ruminal escape and intestinal availability) and 3 or 6 g/day of lysine provided as HML. Blood samples were collected at the end of each feeding period at 3 hours after feeding. Both HML and RPL significantly increased plasma lysine concentrations. By comparison with plasma lysine concentrations when known amounts of bioavailable lysine were provided as RPL, the bioavailability of lysine in HML was estimated to be 94%.     Master′s and doctoral theses in family medicine and their publication output, Suez Canal University, Egypt

    Background: The completion of a thesis is a significant requirement for both a Master′s and a doctorate degree in general practice/family medicine (GP/FM). A postgraduate thesis is a well-planned, time-intensive activity carried out over several years. The quality of the theses can be judged by the proportion of published papers. Objective: This study aimed to describe Master′s and doctoral theses in family medicine and their publications between 1982 and 2014. Materials and Methods: GP/FM degree theses were  reviewed at the Faculty of Medicine and central Suez Canal libraries. Several characteristics were extracted from each thesis relating to the main researcher, supervisors, themes, and study methods according to predefined criteria. Publications from the theses were described. Results: Over 33 years, 208 theses were completed by 173 GP/FM researchers. The majority of the theses were for Master′s degrees (84.1%). Regarding the study design, most of the degree theses were cross-sectional studies (76.9%). The adult population was targeted in 33.7% of  research theses. Nonprobability sampling was used in 51%. Rural communities were the setting of research in 43.8%, and primary health center (PHC)-based studies in 59.1%. The "Patient" category exceeded the other categories (28.4%). Publication from theses started in the second decade of research production. Of the degree theses, 21.6% original articles were published. Only 13.3% of articles from theses were published in PubMed-indexed journals. The researcher was first author in 62.2% of published articles. Conclusion: The production of GP/FM theses and their publications are going to increase. Continuous assessment and planning for GP/FM studies are recommended
