Methodology: This study follows a terminological approach that combines the inductive method in statistics and lexicography with the analytical method in studying the texts using the term “preference” and the deductive method in defining it through its partial meanings as occurring in the texts. Results: The term “preference” holds an essential place in the Holy Qurʾān as it appears frequently and in various forms, indicating its centrality as a fundamental concept and a basis for obligations. The abundance and diversity of its applications in different contexts further highlight its importance, validating the central role of this term in its connection to the fate of humankind. The study concludes with a definition that describes preference as “an increase in grace and honour from the Almighty Creator, symbolising gratitude and forgiveness, and ultimately leading to completeness in the Hereafter, without any possibility of humiliation to follow.” Originality: This study highlights the significance of the term “preference” for humankind, particularly due to its frequent occurrences and diverse grammatical forms in the Qurʾān. New avenues for studying the term’s inner and outer scope come into view and, more specifically, for understanding its applications in the Holy Qurʾān

    Le scritture dei filosofi - Un'introduzione - L'usignolo e la capinera

The introduction explores the crossroads of the art of writing, illuminating at least two aspects in the act of composition: the philosopher, who clearly (or vaguely) argues their ideas to formally present them, and the novelist, who dissolves himself to allow the story to grow on its own. These two aspects often intertwine, as in the case of Nietzsche, where the “second personality” he called Zarathustra takes precedence over the first. Historically, the evolution of the alphabet in Greece led to many revolutions, including an unprecedented egocentrism, the emergence of the author as such, and the development of what Descartes would later call “clear and distinct ideas”. Poetic intuition, despite Plato’s aversion, has not died, and what we believe to be the result of a logical-analytical process could actually be closer to an inspired novel rather than rationalistic philosophy (or vice versa)

A load-cell based in-bed body motion detection and classification system

The basic necessity of sleep in our life is critically important to ensure our wellbeing. Sufficient sleep of good quality is highly desired in order to have enough energy to live. One of the main factors to measure sleep quality is the amount of body motion during sleep. In-bed motion detection is an important technique that can enable an array of applications, among which are sleep monitoring and abnormal movement detection. When detection is combined with classification, it can be used to detect, notify, and recognize specific events, enabling us to focus on critical tasks. In this study, we present a low-cost, low-overhead, and highly robust system for in-bed movement detection and classification that uses low-end load cells. By observing the forces sensed by the load cells, placed under each bed leg, we can detect many different types of movements, and further classify them as big or small depending on magnitude of the force changes on the load cells. We have designed three different features, which we refer to as Log-Peak, Energy-Peak, and ZeroX-Valley, that can effectively extract body movement signals from load cell data that is collected through wireless links in an energy-efficient manner. After establishing feature values, we employ a simple threshold-based algorithm to detect and classify movements. We have conducted a thorough evaluation, that involves collecting data from 30 subjects who perform 27 pre-defined movements in an experiment. By comparing our detection and classification results against the ground truth captured by a video camera, we show the Log-Peak strategy can detect these 27 types of movements at an error rate of 6.3% while classifying them as big or small movements at an error rate of 4.2%. In the second part of this dissertation, we set out to achieve much finer body motion classification. Towards this goal, we define 9 classes of movements, and design a machine learning algorithm using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest techniques to classify a movement into one of these 9 classes. In this way, we can find out which body parts are involved in every movement. For every movement, we have extracted 24 features and used them in our model. This movement classification system was evaluated on data collected from 40 subjects who performed 35 predefined movements in each experiment. The accuracy of our model is not the same for all classes of movements. On average, it correctly classifies 90% of movements. This model can be used conveniently for long-term home monitoring. To improve the classification accuracy, we investigate more machine learning techniques. We use Random Forest and XGBoost as additional classification tools. We apply multiple tree topologies for each technique to reach their best results. After examining various combinations, we achieve the final classification accuracy of 91.5%. Lastly, another in-bed motion detection system is built. We use a geophone sensor to detect body motions in bed, which we call MotionPhone. MotionPhone is more accurate in detecting motion but not efficient for classification purposes. We thus believe combining these two systems can give us better results. Both systems are unobtrusive, low-cost, and private, which can thus enable a large array of important applications.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Musaab Adil Alazi

A New Perspective on the Origins of Yusuf Adil Shah, Founder and First Ruler of the Adil Shahi Sultanate

The Adil Shahi Sultanate was an important state founded in 1489 by Yusuf Adil Shah in the Deccan region of India, centered in Vijayapura. The sultanate witnessed eight different rulers until it was destroyed by the army of Babur in 1686. Some researchers generally base their studies on Muhammad Qasim Hindu Shah’s work titled Ferishtah’s History of Deccan, which is one of the main sources for this sultanate. According to researchers and based on this resource,Yusuf was the son of the Ottoman ruler Murad II. However, other claims about Yusuf’s lineage appear to have not been included in these studies. Thus, these academic studies can be said to be methodologically incomplete or insufficient. In fact, Fuzuni Astarabadi was another author to write about the sultanate and attributed Yusuf’s origins to the Ottoman ruler Suleiman the Magnificent in his work titled Futuhat-i-Adil Shahi. Another author, Rafiuddin Ibrahim Shirazi, wrote Tazkirat ul-Muluk, in which he attributed Yusuf’s origins to the Aq Qoyunlu Sultan Uzun Hasan. The novel claims about Yusuf’s origins in these works that researchers have ignored necessitate an examination of the issue in full detail. This study analyzes each of these claims by making use of Ottoman and Aq Qkoyunlu chronicles. As a result, the research reveals that the accuracy of these allegations should be questioned. The authors who put forward these claims are assumed to have aimed to strengthen the legitimacy of the sultan of the period due to their own interests or the political circumstances of the sultanate. In this context, the current study has focused on the question of who Yusuf Adil Shah was. As a result, the research has concluded him to have been an ordinary Turk who belonged to the Shiite sect and who’d originally migrated from the city of Save in Iran to the Bahmani lands. The obtained findings provide an important new perspective on Yusuf’s lineage that researchers should take into account

Tracing the Intensive: On Assemblages, Technicities and Urban Pedagogies

    No full text
Nowadays, emerging technologies continuously shift our understanding of human evolution as well as influence the understanding of the built and urban environment. It is evident that architectural and urban pedagogies are equally impacted by the so-called digital turns. On the one hand, digital technologies introduce a great variety of technical methods, such as mapping, filming, geographic information systems (GIS), parametric modelling or VR/AR technology, facilitating the extraction of certain aspects of urban life through qualitative and quantitative analyses or simulations. On the other hand, the rapid growth of such technologies has also raised questions on whether it could enhance the very understanding of urban conditions in evoking a critical thinking of the dynamic, transient and intensive encounters of urban life. To respond to that, one can perhaps turn to philosopher Gilbert Simondon and his concept of technicity: simply put, technicity deals with how humans relate and transform their environment through technology and how these relations transform all of them in their own – humans, technology, and environment. Utilising the concept of technicity, this paper intends to speculate on the intensive dynamics of urban life. It will do so by firstly embracing assemblage thinking and understanding the urban as an emergent and plastic condition. Secondly, in teasing out the tangible dimensions of technicity, the paper aims to discuss the affective, reticular, and co-transformative relations between people, spaces, and memory as produced and ramified by technology. It then brings the above discussions together to articulate potential urban pedagogies that are enabled by transdisciplinarity and a problem-based understanding of knowledge. Finally, the paper places an open-ended question: how digital literacy could produce a form of urban literacy, and how lack of knowledge on the entanglements between architecture and digital technologies leads eventually to an impediment in understanding how urban life is influenced by both.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Theory, Territories & TransitionsDesign & Construction Managemen

One of his outstanding works is “Unsent Letters”. This work is comprised of unsent letters of the female character of the work Aliye who fell in love during her student years and got married butfor various reasons she had to broke up. Author, in his work on the one side describes this relationship, on the other side he questions it by Aliye’s view. The work shows the Soviet-Tatar women’s stance towards life and survival struggle during the period the Aliye character is written; on the other hand, it puts forward the general features of an ideal woman should have which was constituted around this character. Kutuy in this work, emphasizes the importance of family concept despite the conflict with official ideology. Author is arguing for that people who loves each other should live together, for this reason the family should be protected, he states that children grow up in a healthy family environment. Gönderilmemiş Mektuplar, could be defined as “short novel” or “long story” technically

Adil Baykasoglu and Nabil N.Z. Gindy LOADING FLEXIBLE CELLS: TABU SEARCH BASED SIMULATION OPTIMISATION APPROACH

    No full text
In this work a tabu search-based "multi-objective simulation optimisation model " is proposed for loading flexible cell production systems. The problem is formally stated as a goal-programming model hybrid in nature. Some objectives and parameters are determined analytically others are determined from the developed simulation model. The model is solved utilising a tabu search algorithm developed by the author. In the developed methodology parts are assigned to the cells to achieve required performance levels. A capabilitybased approach is used to define processing requirements of products and processing capabilities of production resources. Parts are assigned to cells such that load is balanced between cells and individual production resources within the cells, cell interactions are kept to a minimum, required system performance levels satisfied (when feasible). Example application is provided to explain the developed methodology. 1
