COMMUNICATION AND RURAL DEVELOPEMENT: A MODEL FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
The failure in developemental endeavours in the rural areas of Africa does not stem substantially from the lack of funds. Rather, other factors conspire to make rural development a difficult task. One of these factors is communication. This paper examines the role of communication in the process of rural development. In pursuance of this, the paper explains the concept of rural development and change. Thereafter, it discusses how the mass media could be used to aid rural development through communication. The problems of this endeavour are also examined as well as how these problems could be surmounted. Based on conclusions drawn from the critical examination of the process of rural development, recommendations are made on how the process can be carried out effectively.

THE MEDIA AND THE NEED TO HARNESS TRADITIONAL TABOOS AND INJUNCTIONS FOR SOCIAL COHESION IN NIGERIA
ABSTRACT Despite development in different spheres of life, the Nigerian society remains socially fragmented. The altruistic philosophy reminiscent of the African socio-political pantheon has been eroded and replaced by the western model which emphasizes individualism. This has bred the endemic corruption that continues to weigh down on societal development. It is in the light of this that this paper focuses on traditional taboos and injunctions as a means of fostering social cohesion in the Nigerian society. The paper opines that proper harnessing of traditional taboos and injunctions will engender social cohesion and stem the tide of corruption. The paper advocates that the media have a role to play. It equally indentifies certain challenges facing the media in their performance of this role. The paper concludes that legislation should be used to back the revitalization of these taboos towards, societal development
Arts and Design Studies The Role of Television in Sports Development in Nigeria
Abstract Sports as a collected term, represents one important area of national life which most nations of the world continue to emphasize. Such countries use it to project their image. Flowing from this fact, there is, therefore, the need to develop the area as a way of integrating a country into the global nexus. Sports development involves the mass media which contribute to this development in a number of ways. This paper focuses, particularly on Nigerian television and its role in sports development in Nigeria. The paper finds that the medium has failed to adequately perform its role in this regard. The paper thus suggests a new role for Nigerian television and suggests ways of performing this role

The Nigerian Film Plot
The Nigerian film industry, otherwise known as Nollywood, has been acknowledged to be the second-largest in the world in terms of volume of production. This fact presents an interesting vista worthy of investigation, especially with regard to the quality of the films produced. It is in respect of this premise that this article examines the plot of the Nigerian film—a feature capable of affecting the popularity of the film. The essay, having dwelt on what plot is, critically examines the Nigerian film plot and finds that Nollywood films mostly adopt an episodic structure, thereby making them unnecessarily long. Besides (and this is systemically related to episodic structure and to a natural tendency in Nigerian rhetoric), many of the films tend to be too wordy, too chatty, over-padded, thus often earning them scathing criticism. The challenges of scriptwriting in this regard are examined, culminating in recommendations for how to improve the quality of scripts through plot construction in this vibrant film culture.</jats:p
Effective Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) Delivery as Panacea for Restiveness and Conflict in The Niger Delta: Role of The Mass Media
The Niger Delta has been a cauldron of restiveness and violent conflicts. Most of these conflicts result from the failure of the multinational corporations operating in the region to adequately discharge their Corporate Social Responsibility to the people. It is against this backdrop that this paper examines the issue of Corporate Social Responsibility as the panacea for the restiveness and conflict in the region as we as the crucial role the mass media have to play in assisting the corporate organisations to effectively discharge their obligations to the people. It is propounded here that failure to disseminate relevant information in this regard has led to mistrust and misunderstanding which eventually culminate in restiveness and conflict. The role of the media is therefore equally examined. The paper discovers that the media are constrained in the performance of this role. These constraints are presented and ways of tackling them are proffered
