    In this interview, Carla Trujillo discusses her roots, which include being born in New Mexico and growing up in Northern California. Carla received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Educational Psychology from UW-Madison and became an established author. It will help determine which audio file(s) to download & listen to.Carla Trujillo was born to a working class family in New Mexico and grew up in Northern California. Her extended family and roots are New Mexican (Chicana). She received her B.S. degree in Human Development from UC Davis, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Her dissertation focused on assessing differential treatment of underrepresented students in college classrooms. She is the editor of Living Chicana Theory and Chicana Lesbians: The Girls Our Mothers Warned Us About (Third Woman Press), winner of a Lambda Book Award and the Out/Write Vanguard Award. Her first novel, What Night Brings (Curbstone Press 2003), won the Miguel Marmol prize focusing on human rights. What Night Brings also won the Paterson Fiction Prize, the Latino Literary Foundation Latino Book Award, Bronze Medal from Foreword Magazine, Honorable Mention for the Gustavus Meyers Books Award, and was a LAMBDA Book Award finalist. Carla has also written various articles on identity and higher education. Her latest novel, Faith and Fat Chances, was a finalist for the 2012 PEN Bellwether Prize for socially engaged fiction and is forthcoming from Curbstone/Northwestern University Press. Carla works as the Assistant Dean for Graduate Diversity Program at U.C. Berkeley and has focused some of her recent activities on improving the work and classroom climate using Interactive Theater. She has lectured in Ethnic Studies at U.C. Berkeley and Mills College, and in Women’s Studies at S.F. State University. She has also taught fiction for the Sandra Cisneros Macondo Writers Program and the Lambda Literary Foundation’s Emerging Writers Program

    Spin networks and sturmian orbitals: Orthogonal complete polynomial sets in molecular quantum mechanics

    An outline is given of current advances on some basic ingredients of applied quantum mechanics, that were previously developed along different lines and are now being compacted within a unifying framework. Specifically, (i) complete orthogonal expansion basis sets for the atomic and molecular orbitals of quantum chemistry are classified within angular momentum theory, presently incorporated in and generalized as spin network theory; (ii) spin-networks and the underlying theory of hypergeometrical polynomials are presented within a graphical approach; (iii) the combinatorial significance of the graphical approach is given a projective geometry foundation; (iv) emergence and role of hidden (Regge's) symmetries are revealed and discussed in a variety of contexts

    Laser surface texturing of polypropylene to increase adhesive bonding

    In this paper, the main parameters of laser surface texturing of polymeric substrates have been studied. The final aim of the texturing is to increase the performance of bonded joints of grey-pigmented polypropylene substrates. The experimental investigation was carried out starting from the identification of the most effective treatment parameters, in order to achieve a good texture without compromising the characteristics of the bulk material. For each of these parameters, three values were individuated and 27 sets of samples were realised. The surface treatment was analysed and related to the mechanical characteristics of the bonded joints performing lap-shear tests. A statistical analysis in order to find the most influential parameter completed the work

    Hybrid FSWeld-bonded joint fatigue behaviour

    Aluminium alloys, widely used in aeronautics, are increasingly involved in the automotive industry due to the good relationship between mechanical strength and specific weight. The lightening of the structures is the first objective, which allows the decreasing in the weight in motion. The use of aluminium alloys has also seen the introduction of the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) technique for the production of structural overlapping joints. FSW allows us to weld overlap joints free from defects, but with the presence of a structural notch further aggravated by the presence of a "hook" defect near the edge of the weld. Furthermore, FSW presents a weld penetration area connected to the tool geometry and penetration. The experimental activity will be focused on the combination of two different joining techniques, which can synergistically improve the final joint resistance. In particular, the welding and bonding process most commonly known as weld-bonding is defined as a hybrid process, as it combines two different junction processes. In this paper we analyse FSWelded AA6082 aluminium alloy overlapped joint with the aim of quantitatively evaluating the improvement provided by the presence of an epoxy adhesive between the plates. After optimising the weld-bonding process, the mechanical behaviour of welded joints will be analysed by static and dynamic tests. The presence of the adhesive should limit the negative effect of the structural notch inevitable in a FSW overlapped joint

    Is Hyper-extensionality Preservable Under Deletions of Graph Elements?

    Any hereditarily finite set S can be represented as a finite pointed graph –dubbed membership graph– whose nodes denote elements of the transitive closure of {S} and whose edges model the membership relation. Membership graphs must be hyper-extensional, that is pairwise distinct nodes are not bisimilar and (uniquely) represent hereditarily finite sets. We will see that the removal of even a single node or edge from a membership graph can cause “collapses” of different nodes and, therefore, the loss of hyper-extensionality of the graph itself. With the intent of gaining a deeper understanding on the class of hyper-extensional hereditarily finite sets, this paper investigates whether pointed hyper-extensional graphs always contain either a node or an edge whose removal does not disrupt the hyper-extensionality property

    Laser welding of polypropylene using two different sources

    In this paper, laser weldability of neutral polypropylene has been investigated using fibre and carbon dioxide lasers. A design of experiment (DoE) was conducted in order to establish the influence of the main working parameters on the welding strength of the two types of laser. The welded samples were characterized by carrying out visual and microscopic inspection for the welding morphology and cross-section, and by distinguishing the tensile strength. The resulting weld quality was investigated by means of optical microscopy at weld cross-sections. The tensile strength of butt-welded materials was measured and compared to that of a corresponding bulk material
