Letter from author unknown to [Florence Merriam] Bailey, 1902 Dec 14.
(Original in possession of Mrs. Florence Merriam Bailey)Martinez, California,Dec. 14, 1902.Dear Mrs. Bailey:Many thanks for your magnificent bird-book. I had already ordered a copy from your publishers, but the copy with your card came first. I hare been reading it, tasting it here and there, and like it better far than I expected, which in your case, with so much experience in writing and first hand knowledge from long loving wanderings afield with such a brother and such a husband, is saying a great deal. Any naturalist might well be proud of carrying such an undertaking to so full and happy a conclusion. It is well proportioned, scientific but not too technical, and delightfully readable all through. It is easily the best book not only of the birds of the west, but we might almost say of The West in general; for the ground and the sky,- all the vast wild country is vividly pictured and described in it,-its weird deserts and canons and wide flowery valleys, mountains and forests, lakes and streams.I have not heard a word from your brother since he left us for home. I sent some nuts, raisins, etc. by Southern Pacific about ten days ago, hoping they would arrive in time for your Christmas dinner. Please hand him this shipping receipt so that he may know where to look for them. With best wishes for you all and grand success of every kind for the new book, I am,Sincerely yours,P. S. The illustrations in general are superb, but that Mearns Quail with the head of an ancient Aztec in war paint or soap-root lather can hardly be a good likeness.(Above is copy of a typewritten, unsigned letter)06208https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmcl/41055/thumbnail.jp
An Bailey tree and Rogers-Ramanujan-type identities
The Bailey chain of Andrews, Schilling and the author is
extended to a four-parameter Bailey tree. As main application of
this tree, we prove the Kanade-Russell conjecture for a three-parameter family
of Rogers-Ramanujan-type identities related to the principal characters of the
affine Lie algebra . Combined with known -series
results, this further implies an -analogue of the
celebrated Andrews-Gordon -series identities. We also use the
Bailey tree to prove a Rogers-Selberg-type identity for the characters of the
principal subspaces of indexed by arbitrary level-
dominant integral weights . This generalises a result of Feigin,

Chaetozone ronaldi Magalhães & Bailey-Brock, 2013, sp. nov.
Chaetozone ronaldi sp. nov. Figures 12 A–E, 13 A–D Material examined. Holotype: Mamala Bay, south shore of Oahu Island, Hawaii, Sta. S 12 R 2 B, 21 ° 13 ʹ 38.84 ʺ N, 157 ° 56 ʹ 50.30 ʺ W, 481 m, Jan. 1995 (USNM 1195161). Paratypes: same locality and date as holotype, Sta. S 5 R 2 B, 21 ° 15 ʹ 49.15 ʺ N, 157 ° 56 ʹ 18.68 ʺ W, 408 m (1 on stub, USNM 1195162; 1, BPBM R 3648). Description. Holotype 2.2 mm long, 0.2 mm wide with 42 chaetigers. Paratypes 2.4–2.5 mm long, 0.2–0.25 wide per 31–44 chaetigers. Body dorsally rounded and ventrally flattened in anterior chaetigers; enlarged dorsal area covering chaetigers 12–15 (end of thorax), forming a “stomach” (Figs 12 D, 13 A); abdominal segments submoniliform to moniliform in far posterior segments, forming complete cinctures (Figs 12 E, 13 C), dorsal groove projects notopodial spines towards mid-dorsum, overlapping notospines (Figs 12 E, 13 C). Pygidium with a simple ventral disk (Fig. 12 C). Color in alcohol yellow to pale. Prostomium elongate, conical, tapering anteriorly, nuchal organs or eyes not observed; peristomium with a dorsal crest, well-separated from prostomium, lacking annulation (Figs 12 A, B, 13 A, B). One achaetous segment after peristomium bears a pair of tentacles and a pair of branchiae (Fig. 13 B). Subsequent branchiae one per chaetiger, dorsal to notochaetae, lacking in very posterior end of the body. Thoracic region with only capillary chaetae; elongated and natatory-like in the “stomach” region; 8–10 capillaries per notopodia and neuropodia (Fig. 13 A). Neuroacicular spines from chaetigers 22 –24, 3– 4 spines alternating with companion capillaries; notoacicular spines from chaetigers 26 –27, 3– 4 spines alternating with companion capillaries. Complete cinctures present from chaetiger 30–32, with 19–20 acicular spines alternating with same number of companion capillaries; a small dorsal and ventral gap present, notospines projecting toward mid-dorsum, forming a dorsal groove and crossing over, no gap present laterally; spines sharply-pointed with a basal constriction; accompanying capillaries slightly longer than spines (Figs 12 E, 13 C, D). MGSP. Whole body stains light green, branchiae stain darker. Prostomium intensely stained, leaving anterior tip unstained. “Stomach” region and posterior segments stain a darker green than the rest of the body (Fig. 12 D). Pygidium stains intensely (Fig. 12 D). Remarks. This species is closely related to C. brunnea Blake, 2006 due to the presence of an enlarged “stomach” region in anterior segments, but differs in the paler coloration, presence of complete cinctures with overlapping spines ventrally, and distinct MGSP (see also Table 3). Etymology. Named after Mr. Ronald Bailey, father of the author JHB-B who introduced her to marine life and later helped collect polychaetes. Biology/Ecology. Chaetozone ronaldi sp. nov., has been sampled in deep waters (408–481 m) during a study of harbor dredge disposal sites. Distribution. Mamala Bay, south shore of Oahu Island, Hawaii, USA.Published as part of Magalhães, Wagner F. & Bailey-Brock, Julie H., 2013, Bitentaculate Cirratulidae (Annelida: Polychaeta) from the northwestern Pacific Islands with description of nine new species, pp. 80-116 in Zootaxa 3630 (1) on pages 97-98, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.3630.1.3, http://zenodo.org/record/24734
Can health trainers make a difference with difficult-to-engage clients? A multisite case study
A political attempt in the United Kingdom to address health inequalities in the past decade has been the government’s initiative to employ local health trainers (HTs) or health trainer champions (HTCs) to support disadvantaged individuals with aspects of their health-related behaviors. HT/HTCs provide health-related information and support to individuals with healthy eating, physical activity, and smoking cessation. They undertake community engagement and direct individuals to relevant health services. They differ in that HTs are trained to provide health interventions to individuals or groups and to make referrals to specialist health care services when necessary. This article provides an evaluation of HT/HTCs interventions across three sites, including one prison, one probation service (three teams), and one mental health center. An evaluation framework combining process and outcome measures was employed that used mixed methods to capture data relating to the implementation of the service, including the context of the HT/HTCs interventions, the reactions of their clients, and the outcomes reported. It was found that HT/HTCs interventions were more effective in the prison and mental health center compared with the probation site largely as a result of contextual factors

Using the Bailey Method to Improve Asphalt Concrete Mix Performance Indicators for Balanced Mix Design
The Bailey Method is a tool that optimizes asphalt concrete mixes, considering the packing of both coarse and fine aggregates. Nonetheless, the usefulness of The Bailey for balanced mix designs has not been studied in Canada. Aggregates packing could influence the asphalt mixture's resistance to distresses such as rutting and cracking. This study provides insight into the modifications and performance indicators of selected asphalt mixtures in New Brunswick. Testing included the Hamburg Wheel Tracking Test, the Ideal Shear Rutting Test, and the Indirect Tensile Asphalt Cracking Test. The test results from laboratory mixes produced according to the latest and currently approved designs were compared using various statistical analyses. The results suggest that using the Bailey Method could enhance the rutting resistance while maintaining acceptable cracking resistance in asphalt mixtures. This research's findings are relevant to identifying alternative changes or adjustments when using the balanced mix design approach. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page.
