Learning styles and learning strategies: assessing their impact on Science Foundation students
No full textScience Foundation is an integral part of the University of Huddersfield’s commitment to widening participation. It is specifically designed for those looking to study and work in the sciences but who lack the appropriate qualifications or experience to enrol as first-year undergraduates. In each year’s cohort there is a wide spectrum of diversity in terms of age, ethnicity, social class, previous academic achievement and previous work experience. Many of those who enrol can be described as non-traditional. In the main, they are returning to full-time education following an extended break or they have recently underperformed in previous studies. Intuitively, the introduction of learning styles into the curriculum may help these students cope better with their transition into the culture of higher education. Building on the recent critiques of learning style theories, this article gives consideration to the implications for teaching and learning that their introduction have. It places quantitative and qualitative research undertaken with Science Foundation students within a framework of equity and employability. Ultimately it argues that the way in which learning styles are used has to reflect the motivations and aspirations of students

No full textThe trematodes described in this paper are but two of over 100 species collected from marine fishes in 1934, during the third G. Allan Hancock Expedition to the Galapagos Islands. The author\u27s presence on this expedition was sponsored in part by the Carnegie Institution of Washington. A brief preliminary report on the trematodes collected has been made (Manter, 1934) and a more complete report on the digenetic forms is in preparation. An early description of these two forms is felt justified in view of their significance in connection with the phylogeny of the Distomata. The author has already indicated (Manter, 1935) a relationship between certain allocreadiid-like distomes (Megasolena Linton and Hapladena Linton) and amphistomes. The new genus described below further substantiates such a view and indicates that the Anallocreadiinae in particular may be involved. A discussion of these relationships will follow a description of the new species

Diagnosi di infezione da circovirus suino tipo 2 (PCV2) e della Post Weaning Multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) mediante analisi PCR di campioni di sangue, feci e tamponi tonsillari prelevati da animali vivi.
No full textIl circovirus suino tipo 2 (PCV2) è l’agente eziologico della sindrome multisistemica del deperimento post-svezzamento del suino (Post Weaning Multisystemic wasting syndrome, PMWS). In questo studio, è stata valutata nel tempo, mediante PCR, la presenza di DNA di PCV2 in campioni di sangue e in tamponi tonsillari e fecali prelevati da 12 suini infettati sperimentalmente con PCV2. I risultati ottenuti sono stati comparati con la presenza di lesioni istologiche tipiche della PMWS e di antigeni di PCV2 nei tessuti, evidenziati mediante immunofluorescenza indiretta (IIF). Alla fine dell’esperimento, 21 giorni post infezione, il DNA di PCV2 era presente nel sangue di tutti i 12 suini infettati e nelle feci e nelle tonsille di 11 di essi. La frequenza di positività dei diversi materiali biologici non presentava differenze statisticamente significative. Solo quattro dei suini infettati presentavano evidenze patologiche o virologiche di PMWS, insieme alla presenza di antigene di PCV2 associato alle lesioni stesse. In questo gruppo di animali la frequenza di campioni ematici PCR-positivi risultava significativamente più elevata rispetto a quella degli altri animali, mentre nessuna differenza veniva evidenziata per i tamponi tonsillari e fecali. In conclusione, questo studio conferma che il DNA di PCV2 può essere facilmente evidenziato mediante PCR nei fluidi biologici di suini infetti almeno 21 giorni post-infezione. La frequente osservazione di campioni positivi negli animali che non presentavano evidenze patologiche e virologiche di PMWS conferma inoltre che una PCR qualitativa non può essere considerata un metodo sufficientemente specifico per la diagnosi di routine di questa sindrome. Tuttavia, la maggiore proporzione di campioni ematici positivi riscontrata nei soggetti con evidenza di malattia suggerisce che la ricerca del DNA di PCV2 nel sangue, specialmente se abbinata ad una quantificazione del virus circolante, potrebbe essere, in animali vivi, un utile supporto diagnostico in caso di sospetto di PMWS

No full textThe crystal and molecular structures of the title complexes (1) and (2) are described. Each contains a Co4 tetrahedron, one face of which is edge-bridged by three μ-CO ligands. In (1), a pair of mutually orthogonal Co-Co bonds are bridged by the two dppm (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) ligands. The structure of the benzene complex was determined at 153 and 300 K; as with other arene-Co4 clusters, the η6-benzene ligand sits on the apical (i.e. non-CO-bridged) Co atom.Michael I. No full textSouth African cleric, academic, author, anti-apartheid activist and politician Allan Aubrey Boesak stepped into the national political arena in early 1983 after he called for the formation of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in response to the apartheid regime's introduction of a tricameral Parliament for whites, Indians and coloureds that excluded black Africans. The cleric thereafter occupied leading positions in the UDF and its various structures, as well as international religious bodies such as the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) that adopted an anti-apartheid stance. He initiated and led many anti-apartheid campaigns during the 1980s. However, his political star waned dramatically following revelations of extra-marital affairs and misuse of funds that had been donated for the benefit of victims of apartheid.
