The Need to Review Peer Review: The Regnerus Scandal as a Call to Action

    No full text
This article uses Mark Regnerus’ methodologically flawed paper, “How different are the adult children of parents who have same-sex relationships? Findings from the New Family Structures Study,” published in the journal Social Science Research (2012) as a catalyst to expose fundamental faults with the existing peer review system in the social sciences. The acceptance of this article has not only been damaging for same-sex equality, but it shows the utility of checks and balances in the current peer review system need improving. This is because: 1) the current system fails to utilize digital technologies of open review which have advanced multiple other scholarly disciplines; 2) the author nomination system facilitates the publication of friendly reviews; 3) anonymity in the review system permits reviewers to promote unchallenged, biased, or personally motivated publication decisions; and 4) impact factors might inspire editors to publish articles that might not otherwise be accepted. After first describing the Regnerus scandal and its political implications, the necessity of improvement in peer review on these four counts is discussed

Is structural stigma's effect on the mortality of sexual minorities robust? A failure to replicate the results of a published study

    No full text
AbstractBackgroundThe study of stigma's influence on health has surged in recent years. Hatzenbuehler et al.’s (2014) study of structural stigma's effect on mortality revealed an average of 12 years' shorter life expectancy for sexual minorities who resided in communities thought to exhibit high levels of anti-gay prejudice, using data from the 1988–2002 administrations of the US General Social Survey linked to mortality outcome data in the 2008 National Death Index.MethodsIn the original study, the key predictor variable (structural stigma) led to results suggesting the profound negative influence of structural stigma on the mortality of sexual minorities. Attempts to replicate the study, in order to explore alternative hypotheses, repeatedly failed to generate the original study's key finding on structural stigma. Efforts to discern the source of the disparity in results revealed complications in the multiple imputation process for missing values of the components of structural stigma. This prompted efforts at replication using 10 different imputation approaches.ResultsEfforts to replicate Hatzenbuehler et al.’s (2014) key finding on structural stigma's notable influence on the premature mortality of sexual minorities, including a more refined imputation strategy than described in the original study, failed. No data imputation approach yielded parameters that supported the original study's conclusions. Alternative hypotheses, which originally motivated the present study, revealed little new information.ConclusionTen different approaches to multiple imputation of missing data yielded none in which the effect of structural stigma on the mortality of sexual minorities was statistically significant. Minimally, the original study's structural stigma variable (and hence its key result) is so sensitive to subjective measurement decisions as to be rendered unreliable

The main content of the article is centered around the presentation of the research work of M. Regnerus published in 2012, aimed to recognize the social dimension of relational functioning adults who had developmental age were under the care of persons living in same sex relationships. An attempt to research were young adults between the ages of 18–39 years. The sample comprised a representative sample of respondents of young adults. The article shows basic statistical differences between experimental groups (children of lesbian mothers and gay fathers) and control group (children raised in heterosexual parent families by parents living in a stable relationship). Comparisons included the following socio-economic position, the current situation of familyties with the family home, sexual identity. Statistically signifi cant differences between experimental groups and the control group occurred in the 25 to 40 (63%) of variables (group of respondents raised by mothers lesbians) and 11 (28%) of respondents raised by gays. All of these differences showed a better development indicators of young adults raised in heterosexual families. Discussed findings are not consistent with the research, which refers to the statement of the 2004 American Psychological Association (APA), demanding the right to adopt children to same-sex unions. The causes of this discrepancy are discussed in detail in the next part of the study. Among other things, the author notes that the research included in the APA report relate to certain stretches of mental life of the children, raised by their mothers lesbians and fathers gay. Issues of gender identity and sexual orientation have not been thoroughly analyzed. Not been studied at all higher control mechanisms and the integration of behavior (personality coherence, system of values, attitudes towards family life, etc.), the quality of which is of particular importance to mental health unit. The conclusions requested, inter alia, that the compounds partner of the same sex have always existed and are not a phenomenon of our times. Some of them, regardless of the letter of the law will hold the child care represent a major challenge for health professionals, NGOs, educational psychotherapy, as well as justice

Lifetime alcohol use, abuse and dependence among university students in Lebanon: Exploring the role of religiosity in different religious faiths

    No full text
Aims: To examine alcohol consumption and the role of religiosity in alcohol use disorders in Christian, Druze and Muslim youth in Lebanon, given their distinct religious doctrines and social norms. Methods: Using a self-completed anonymous questionnaire, data were collected on 1837 students, selected randomly from two large private universities in Beirut. Life-time abuse and dependence were measured as per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual version IV. Findings: Alcohol use was more common in Christians, who started drinking younger and were twice as likely to be diagnosed with abuse and dependence. However, among ever drinkers, the odds of alcohol use disorders were comparable across religious groups. Believing in God and practising one's faith were related inversely to alcohol abuse and dependence in all religious groups, even among ever drinkers (belief in God only). The associations were sometimes stronger for Muslims, suggesting that religiosity may play a larger role in a more proscriptive religion, as postulated by'reference group theory'. Conclusions: Students belonging to conservative religious groups may be shielded from the opportunity to try alcohol. Once an ever drinker, however, religion is not related to the odds of an alcohol use disorder. Religiosity (i.e. belief in God and religious practice) is, nevertheless, related inversely to alcohol-related problems, even among drinkers. Findings from this culturally and religiously diverse Arab country corroborate the international literature on religion, religiosity and alcohol use, highlighting potential differences between Christians and Muslims. © 2009 Society for the Study of Addiction.BOCK EW, 1987, SOCIOLOGICAL Q, V28, P86; Bowie JV, 2006, J STUD ALCOHOL, V67, P44; Boyd Carol J, 2005, Annu Rev Nurs Res, V23, P179; BUKSTEIN OG, 2000, COMPREHENSIVE TXB PS, P2932; Chen CY, 2004, AM J EPIDEMIOL, V159, P1180, DOI 10.1093-aje-kwh151; COCHRAN JK, 1989, J RES CRIME DELINQ, V26, P198, DOI 10.1177-0022427889026003002; COCHRAN JK, 1994, J RES CRIME DELINQ, V31, P92, DOI 10.1177-0022427894031001004; COCHRAN JK, 1988, SOCIOL FORUM, V3, P256, DOI 10.1007-BF01115293; Cottler LB, 1995, DRUG ALCOHOL DEPEN, V38, P71; COTTLER LB, 1995, DRUG ALCOHOL DEPEN, V38, P59, DOI 10.1016-0376-8716(94)01091-X; DAUM N, 1980, RELIG DRUG USE STUDY; Dawson DA, 2004, J STUD ALCOHOL, V65, P477; Forthun LF, 1999, J DRUG ISSUES, V29, P75; Francis LJ, 1997, DRUG ALCOHOL DEPEN, V44, P95, DOI 10.1016-S0376-8716(96)01325-7; Harrison L, 1997, NIDA Res Monogr, V167, P1; HAWKINS JD, 1992, PSYCHOL BULL, V112, P64, DOI 10.1037-0033-2909.112.1.64; JOHNSTON LD, 2002, NATL SURVEY RESULTS, V2, P19; Karam E, 2000, EUR ADDICT RES, V6, P189, DOI 10.1159-000052045; Karam E, 2007, CURR OPIN PSYCHIATR, V20, P213; Karam EG, 2004, DRUG ALCOHOL DEPEN, V76, P273, DOI 10.1016-j.drugalcdep.2004.06.003; Karam EG, 2003, SUBSTANCE USE MISUSE; Kendler KS, 2003, AM J PSYCHIAT, V160, P496, DOI 10.1176-appi.ajp.160.3.496; Kendler KS, 1997, AM J PSYCHIAT, V154, P322; KOVESS V, 1990, SOC PSYCH PSYCH EPID, V25, P179; Marsiglia FF, 2005, AM J ORTHOPSYCHIAT, V75, P585, DOI 10.1037-0002-9432.75.4.585; Mason WA, 2002, J ADOLESCENT RES, V17, P346, DOI 10.1177-07458402017004002; Michalak L, 2007, DRUG ALCOHOL DEPEN, V87, P268, DOI 10.1016-j.drugalcdep.2006.07.013; Miller L, 2000, J AM ACAD CHILD PSY, V39, P1190, DOI 10.1097-00004583-200009000-00020; Moreira-Almeida A, 2006, REV BRAS PSIQUIATR, V28, P242, DOI 10.1590-S1516-44462006000300018; FRANCIS LJ, 1993, ADDICTION, V88, P665, DOI 10.1111-j.1360-0443.1993.tb02079.x; Nonnemaker J, 2006, SOC SCI MED, V62, P3084, DOI 10.1016-j.socscimed.2005.11.052; Patock-Peckham JA, 1998, DRUG ALCOHOL DEPEN, V49, P81, DOI 10.1016-S0376-8716(97)00142-7; Piko BF, 2004, ADDICT BEHAV, V29, P1095, DOI 10.1016-j.addbeh.2004.03.022; PRENDERGAST ML, 1994, J AM COLL HEALTH, V43, P99; Regnerus MD, 2003, SOC SCI RES, V32, P633, DOI 10.1016-S0049-089X(03)00027-9; ROBINS LN, 1998, DIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEW, V4; SHUCKIT MA, 2000, COMPREHENSIVE TXB PS, P952; Sinha JW, 2007, J ADOLESCENCE, V30, P231, DOI 10.1016-j.adolescence.2006.02.005; Webb E, 1997, DRUG ALCOHOL DEPEN, V47, P145, DOI 10.1016-S0376-8716(97)00083-5; Weiss S, 1999, ADDICTION, V94, P177, DOI 10.1046-j.1360-0443.1999.9421772.x; Wills TA, 2003, PSYCHOL ADDICT BEHAV, V17, P24, DOI 10.1037-0893-164X.17.1.2421181
