The Glacier Views of Jean-Antoine Linck – A Milestone for the Mont Blanc Glacier History from the 18th to the 19
Interdisciplinary approaches are needed to reconstruct the behaviour of glaciers beyond the beginning of systematic measurements. For example, historical documents have been used to reconstruct former glacier extents successfully at different sites, including in the well-documented Mont Blanc area that became popular since the mid-18th century among artists, scientists, and travellers. Jean-Antoine Linck from Geneva is probably the artist to whom we owe the greatest number of unique glacier views. Linck’s special preference were the ice regions, which he discovered and drew with alpinistic daring and naturalistic correctness, preferably by gouache, although many pencil sketches are preserved. Linck subtly used the etching technique to create easily reproducible plates in large format, which are then hand-coloured with gouache and watercolour. This technique allowed him to create numerous reproductions of the same view, while still giving them a unique and original aspect, views that are remarkable for their serenity and silence, while offering luminous atmospheres. These illustrations introduced the realistic representation of the high mountains into the iconography of Genevese painting and thus led to a new kind of landscape painting with a permanent character. From a perspective of glacier history and although many of his artworks are not exactly dated by the author, the work of Jean-Antoine Linck is indispensable since it represents the whole development, specifically of the Mer de Glace and the Glacier des Bossons, but also other glaciers during the period from the end of the 18th century until the 19th century glacier maximum around 1820. Linck’s work has the same importance for the Mont Blanc area as that of Caspar Wolf and Samuel Birmann for the central Swiss Alps or Thomas Ender for the Austrian Alps in terms of glacier iconography. Therefore, Linck was both an artist and a glacier historian.

A techno-economic calculation method for the implementation of an autonomous solar and storage system to electrify Vopak’s storage terminals
Vopak has the vision to become climate neutral by 2050 (Scope 1 and 2 emissions). Currently, over 99% of its CO2 emissions originate from storage terminal activities. Action must be taken to reduce these emissions by converting the current (fossil fuel-based) generation of electricity to sustainable energy. This study aims to research how we can develop a methodology to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of an autonomous solar and storage system to electrify Vopak’s storage terminals? The objective of the method is to develop a system that is clean, reliable, autonomous, and payable (cheap). The selected autonomous system comprises a photovoltaic (PV) system, a battery energy storage system (BESS) and a hybrid inverter to satisfy the energy load of the storage terminal. The developed method is a techno-economic model using three interlinked components. First, a PV model uses meteorological data and specific technical characteristics to simulate different PV systems. Second, based on the cost of different components of the PV system and BESS, a grid-search system selection method is used to determine the lowest-cost sizing of an autonomous PV and batterysystem. Third, the sizing of the system is used to calculate the levelized cost of solar plus storage (LCOSS).The method is evaluated for three selected storage terminals located in different climates. The lowest cost developed system for Vopak Fujairah Horizon terminal (desert climate), which has a LCOSS of 0.33 [/kWh] is calculated. Vopak Panama (tropical climate) has a designed system with a LCOSS of 0.53 [$/kWh]. The calculated LCOSS shows that these autonomous systems are not cost-effective, as they are 3 to 14 times more expensive than average energy prices from the grid for the storage terminal locations. A sensitivity analysis of the system costs and the weighted average cost of capital shows that a 50% decrease in battery costs results in a 38% decrease in the LCOSS. Furthermore, a decrease of 2% of the WACC has the same effect as a total system cost reduction of 10%–15%. Ultimately, enabling the system touse its dumped energy by selling it to the grid shows the most significant reduction in the LCOSS.This study clarifies that the cost-effectiveness of an autonomous PV and battery system strongly depends on the climate and seasonal variation of the location as it affects the energy yield of the PV-generating technology and the sizing of the system. Furthermore, the battery system costs are currently two to three times more expensive than a PV system; therefore, to size the lowest-cost system, the sizing strategy rather increases the (cheaper) PV system size to satisfy the load than install an additional battery. This results in oversized PV systems generating a large amount of unused energy. A solution is to enable the system to sell its unused electricity to the grid. An alternative solution would be to add a secondary “clean” energy source, such as a hydrogen generator, to combat these oversized systems and thus reduce the lifetime system costs.Electrical Engineering | Sustainable Energy Technolog
Humor und Ironie in chinesischen Talkshowgesprächen: Scherzkommunikation an der Grenze der Höflichkeitsverletzung
In this empirical investigation into modern Chinese humour, the author explores the mechanisms of conversational joking and irony within the scope of the popular Chinese talk show 实话实说 Shihua shishuo . Based on the Chinese notion of concepts like teasing, irony and sarcasm, the borderline between politically correct forms of humor and impoliteness comes into focus. The playful interaction between the former talk show host Cui Yongyuan and his guests comprises techniques of parody, hyperformality, and different kinds of role play.
Approaching Chinese verbal humor and irony from various pragmatic models, 23 sequences from eight episodes of 实话实说 Shihua shishuo are transcribed, translated and analyzed by means of different Chinese concepts of irony. In this regard, the question to what extent Chinese conversational humor can be accounted for by linguistic theories of irony is challenged. In the analysis of the humorous and ironical sequences, audience reactions like applause, laughter or indignation are taken into account. Moreover, interviews with 12 Chinese native speakers help to identify and to evaluate strategies of conversational irony.
In the context of the Chinese media, censorship and self-censorship are important concomitant factors that are considered along with Chinese politeness and face-work. All these aspects help to understand the political and cultural framework of Chinese humour and irony
‘Putting Life in Years’ (PLINY) telephone friendship groups research study: pilot randomised controlled trial
Background - Loneliness in older people is associated with poor health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We undertook a parallel-group randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of telephone befriending for the maintenance of HRQoL in older people. An internal pilot tested the feasibility of the trial and intervention.
Methods - Participants aged >74 years, with good cognitive function, living independently in one UK city were recruited through general practices and other sources, then randomised to: (1) 6 weeks of short one to one telephone calls, followed by 12 weeks of group telephone calls with up to six participants, led by a trained volunteer facilitator; or (2) a control group. The main trial required the recruitment of 248 participants in a 1-year accrual window, of whom 124 were to receive telephone befriending. The pilot specified three success criteria which had to be met in order to progress the main trial to completion: recruitment of 68 participants in 95 days; retention of 80% participants at 6 months; successful delivery of telephone befriending by local franchise of national charity. The primary clinical outcome was the Short Form (36) Health Instrument (SF-36) Mental Health (MH) dimension score collected by telephone 6 months following randomisation.
Results - We informed 9,579 older people about the study. Seventy consenting participants were randomised to the pilot in 95 days, with 56 (80%) providing valid primary outcome data (26 intervention, 30 control). Twenty-four participants randomly allocated to the research arm actually received telephone befriending due to poor recruitment and retention of volunteer facilitators. The trial was closed early as a result. The mean 6-month SF-36 MH scores were 78 (SD 18) and 71 (SD 21) for the intervention and control groups, respectively (mean difference, 7; 95% CI, -3 to 16).
Conclusions - Recruitment and retention of participants to a definitive trial with a recruitment window of 1 year is feasible. For the voluntary sector to recruit sufficient volunteers to match demand for telephone befriending created by trial recruitment would require the study to be run in more than one major population centre, and/or involve dedicated management of volunteers
Rhinobatos annandalei Norman 1926
Rhinobatos annandalei Norman (Figs. 3C, 12C, D) A muscle sample was taken from a frozen specimen of Rhinobatos Linck (SL-115) collected in 2015 from the Peliyagoda fish market in Colombo in the Western Province. This specimen has now been formally deposited in the BRT Ichthyology Collection (BRT-I 0003). Morphologically, this appears to be a specimen of Rhinobatos annandalei. It bears a symmetrical pattern of small, white spots on its dorsal surface and it exhibits broad grayish brown patches on the ventral surface of the disc and possibly also the tail, although the color of the latter is obscured as a result of freezing. NADH2 data for a reference specimen of confirmed identity was unavailable. However, this specimen differed from the five of its congeners included in the Neighbor-Joining analysis by 83–137 bp. This name is in current use for this species in Sri Lanka (see De Silva 1978, 2006; De Bruin et al. 1995; Morón et al. 1998).Published as part of Fernando, Daniel, Bown, Rosalind M. A poética do arco-íris nos contos de Cíntia Moscovich
This thesis proposes to realize an exegesis on the work Arquitetura do arco-íris by the southern
author Cíntia Moscovich in order to recognize the symbol of the rainbow as the main mediator
of meanings among the stories that compose the collection. In the light of the theory of imagery,
supported by the philosopher Gilbert Durand, it is possible to conjecture a poetic of the rainbow,
since the image of the celestial arc appears as a symbolic axis that, at times, dissolves into
characterizing images of spaces, characters, and actions within the narratives. Thus, it is sought
to understand how symbols euphemize the conflicts experienced by the main characters,
whereas alluding to existential dilemmas which break the stability in the lives of the women
who play the plots. Therefore, it is aimed to establish a new look on the symbolic in Cíntia
Moscovich’s writing, considering that such an approach is still scarce in the author's critical
fortune
