Conservatism, Feminism, and Elizabeth Fox-Genovese
No full textThis paper is a philosophical reconstruction of Elizabeth Fox-Genovese's thinking about women and feminism, and an inquiry into whether there is a conservative form of feminism. The paper argues that Fox-Genovese's endorsement of conventional social forms (like traditional marriage, motherhood, and sexual morality) contrasts strongly with feminism's criticism of these forms, and feminism's claim that they should be transformed. The paper concludes, however, that one need not call Fox-Genovese's thought “feminist” to recognize it as serious advocacy on behalf of women and to include it in discussions about what is good for women.</jats:p

No full textWe conducted an interview with Elizabeth Fox (1947), -one of the pioneers in communication research in Latin America-, with the aim of recovering and highlighting her academic trajectory from her early arrival in Colombia in the mid-sixties to her recent works. Fox unfolded her own intellectual biography while simultaneously contributing to the establishment of a field of study focused on mass media, their concentrated structure, inequalities in the circulation of international flows, U.S. penetration, and national and regional communication policies. She is not only the author of numerous publications -either alone or in collaboration with Luis Ramiro Beltrán or Héctor Schmucler-, but she has also been a great organizer. At a time when everything was “just beginning,” her work also aimed to bring together many other researchers from the region, so that they participated in emerging institutions, and to promote collaborative research to develop and maintain critical thinking.Realizamos una entrevista a Elizabeth Fox (1947) —una de las pioneras de la investigación en comunicación en América Latina—, con el objetivo de recuperar y visibilizar su trayectoria académica desde su temprana llegada a Colombia a mediados de los años sesenta hasta sus últimos trabajos. Fox desplegó su propia biografía intelectual, al mismo tiempo que participó en la fundación de un campo de estudios cuyos objetos fueron los medios masivos, su estructura concentrada, las desigualdades en la circulación de los flujos internacionales, la penetración estadounidense, y las políticas nacionales y regionales de comunicación. No solo es autora de numerosas publicaciones —sola o en colaboración con Luis Ramiro Beltrán o Héctor Schmucler—, sino que también ha sido una gran organizadora. En un momento en el que todo estaba “como empezando”, su tarea también apuntó a reunir a otras tantas investigadoras e investigadores de la región, para que participaran en las instituciones que comenzaban a surgir, y así promover una investigación colectiva para desarrollar y mantener un pensamiento crítico
