Eliza Ryland
Eliza was born in Ireland in about 1851; by March 1876 she had migrated to Palmerston where she was charged with assaulting a man. That man in turn was charged with using abusive language towards her. At age 26, on 26 November 1877, she married 33 year old publican, George Henry Ryland, of Rum Jungle Hotel. In 1895, Eliza was one of the 82 Northern Territory women who enrolled to vote after the franchise was granted to South Australian and Territory women in 1894. She had just turned 44; she registered at Palmerston and her occupation was listed as "married woman". Eliza was unable to vote, however, as she died at Rum Jungle on 18 December 1895 of 'carbuncle debility'. Eliza is buried at Palmerston Pioneer Cemetery. George died in 1911 age 67 of tuberculosis.PublicanIris

In 1895 when Eliza was 59, she was one of the 82 women who enrolled to vote after the franchise was granted to South Australian and Territory women in 1894.
