Collective suffixes and ad hoc categories: from Latin -ālia to Italian -aglia.

The expression of ad hoc categories ranges from discourse-level to syntactic and morphological strategies. Considering derivation in particular, it has been observed that also collective suffixes can be used for the identification of context-dependent sets. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relation between collectives and ad hoc categories by focusing on the Italian suffix -aglia and by discussing its diachronic relation with the Latin neuter nouns ending in -ālia. The discussion concerning the notion of collective will take into account a recent proposal that distinguishes between collective nouns, aggregate nouns, and superordinates. As will be shown, aggregate nouns are of particular interest for interpreting some Latin pluralia tantum in -ālia that denote sets of heterogeneous entities with similar properties. The same possibility to derive aggregate nouns characterizes the suffix -aglia that, when attached to proper nouns, can also convey associative meanings, or denote categories including persons and situations that share the named exemplar as a common denominator. As the analysis will show, the development of these functions correlates with the mechanisms of (inter)subjectification

    Linguistic Typology at the Crossroads

    No full text
The journal aims to host research within the field of linguistic typology. It is meant to give space above all, but not exclusively, to studies exploring the crossroads at which linguistic typology meets its closest neighbors. The journal will therefore welcome works dealing especially with the intersections between typology and other areas of linguistics, such as diachrony, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, corpus-based analysis of speech and discourse

    Studi e Saggi Linguistici

Ever since it was founded in 1961 by Tristano Bolelli, Studi e Saggi Linguistici plays a major role in the linguistic debate in Italy, especially for those scholars working in the field of Indo-European Historical Linguistics and contemporary Theoretical Linguistics. Today, after 50 years of life, Studi e Saggi Linguistici has a firm position in this field, but it also gained a larger international profile, including well-known foreign scholars as members of its Scientific Committee, and fostering the publication of English-written papers. The Editors always aim at publishing original and innovative papers, whose quality and exactness are guaranteed by the prestigious Scientific Committee, and by the anonymous peer-review process. Although a certain preference is accorded to both historical and general Linguistics, in line with the tradition, the Journal welcomes scientific contributions concerning any linguistic field, with no preference or prejudice for particular methodological approaches and theoretical paradigms. In the last few years, the Journal published wide-ranging papers from typological linguistics to language acquisition, dealt with etymology and with exotic languages, discussed problems of lexicon, as well as of phonetics and neurolinguistics. Finally, the Journal has two sections, ‘Discussions’ and ‘Reviews’, which provide currently updated information about the most recent works on Linguistic topics that are published in Italy and Abroad. Linguistica e linguistiche (Bologna: Pàtron, 2011)

    No full text

Intensity, reduplication, and pluractionality in Ancient Greek

This paper deals with the manifestation of intensity in the verbal system of Ancient Greek, where both the present and the perfect include marginal and recessive groups of ‘intensive’ verbs marked by reduplication. These forms involve unresolved questions concerning their origin, the semantics of intensification and the linguistic devices used to convey this notion. The investigation focuses on a peculiar set of Homeric verbs that, although they are classified as perfects, describe ongoing processes and differ from the presents only in the intensity that characterizes the events. The discussion highlights the inadequacy of the label ‘intensive perfect’ and proposes an analysis based on the connections between intensification, reduplication and pluractionality. It will be argued that intensity can be addressed as pertaining to event plurality, and that a number of examples with ‘abnormal’ perfects can find a unifying explanation when interpreted as encoding different types of pluractional meanings. The semantic maps illustrating the intersections between the diachronic paths of reduplication and the domain of event plurality will clarify the functions and the evolution of the Homeric perfects
