Tracking Sources Along the US East Coast | by E. Reisinger
Featured image: Charles River, Cambridge/MA © private photo, E. Reisinger, 2019 Equipped with an Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), I started a postdoc residency at Harvard University on 1 September 2019 that was originally planned to last 12 months. On the one hand, my choice to spend some time in the Boston area, to elaborate my pilot study on Benny Goodman and to develop my approach in the field of performer patronage was based on the faculty members of Har..
IMS 2022 in Athens | by E. Reisinger
At the end of August, this conference summer held another highlight: the 21st Quinquennial Congress of the International Musicological Society. Following a five year cycle, hundreds of music scholars gathered in Athens, Greece, enjoying a wideranging program representing the broad variety of our discipline. I, myself, actively particpated in two roles, as participant of a study session on musical patronage and as presenter of a free paper. The session "Musical Patronage across Borders: Gende..
Chimes on the Rhine | by E. Reisinger
The bells of the Basel Minster greeted me each morning when I arrived at the doors of the Paul Sacher Foundation. A short ringing inside the building signaled the lunch break for everyone. The Minster's bell at 1 p.m. told me to come back. Eventually, the little chime at 4:45 p.m. would mark the end of the day in the archive. And from time to time, through the open window in the reading room, I would hear another bell ringing down at the river, meaning that someone was just calling the ferry..
Retrospect 2022 / Preview 2023 | by E. Reisinger
2022 was the first full calendar year in the duration of my research project - reason enough for a short retrospective... After Corona-related breaks and shifts in the conference calendar, I finally again had the opportunity to present aspects and results of my work internationally. The IMS Conference in Athens in August was, of course, a particular highlight. There I (re-)connected with many wonderful colleagues. It was also a great chance to engage with the IMS Study Group "Gender and Musi..
Performers as Commissioners - New Research Project | by E. Reisinger
The last quarter of 2021 held something special for me: the start of my new research project "Performers as Commissioners of New Music in the Twentieth Century: Preconditions, Self-Conceptions, Impacts." It is funded by an Elise Richter Grant (with a volume of € 379,095.37) from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and runs from October 2021 to September 2025 at the University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna. As a follow up to my work on Benny Goodman, this study includes further artists, wh..
Introducing Performer Patronage as Research Field | by E. Reisinger
The Genius of Music, Italian, late 15th–early 16th century (Rogers Fund, 1938, public domain, Metropolitan Museum of Art) It all seemed so simple, not so long ago: composers (white, male, European) were directly in touch with their muses (mysteriously and unmediatedly – but also overcoming doubt, struggle and hardship), and were at the same time the obedient servants of the destiny of the material. Under the twin guidance of these absolute forces, but somehow also fired up by moments of insp..
Interview with Composer Allen Shawn | by E. Reisinger
Allen Shawn © 2018 by Cynthia Locklin Recently, I had the great pleasure of talking to Allen Shawn. I had reached out to him in the context of my research on Benny Goodman, as he had received a composition commission from Goodman in 1983, resulting in a double concerto for clarinet, cello, and orchestra. Apart from that, Shawn has been working with numerous other performers throughout his career and his work is strongly influenced by such collaborations. The subsequent interview presents a t..
Music Since 1900 Conference in Birmingham | by E. Reisinger
From June 17 until June 20, 2022, I had the pleasure of attending the Twelfth International Conference on Music Since 1900 at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. It was a wonderful opportunity to introduce my project "Performers as Commissioners of New Music" with a poster. The conference papers represented research on musical genres, cultures, and practices in the 20th and 21st centuries in great diversity. Numerous concerts and performances were also integrated into the program and enabled..
A Connection Between Wittgenstein and Goodman: Paul Hindemith | by E. Reisinger
At first glance, pianist Paul Wittgenstein and clarinetist Benny Goodman don't have much in common. The one came from one of the wealthiest families in Austria and pursued a career as a classical pianist, although his family initially did not approve. The other grew up in poor circumstances as the son of Jewish immigrants in Chicago and achieved enormous success as a swing musician in the U.S. and around the world. And yet, in my research, I foreground their commonalities: both commissioned ..
Two Sylvias and a Surprising Discovery in New York | by E. Reisinger
I've recently returned from my latest research trip to the United States, a trip with a truly extraordinary backstory. This time, my journey took me to Philadelphia to explore the holdings of the University of Pennsylvania (stay tuned for more details on that in an upcoming report), and then to New York, where a rather remarkable development reached its climax. The beginning of this story, however, takes us back to August 2022, when I was attending the congress of the International Musicolog..
