Premalignant and pre-invasive lesions of the breast

Premalignant and pre-invasive lesions of the breast belong to a complex and heterogeneous group of lesions and represent a matter of remarkable interest from both clinical and biological standpoints. These frequent noninvasive alterations are related with an increased probability of breast cancer development. What is more, these breast abnormalities show extremely variable risks of progression toward invasive forms of disease. Indeed, while there are many histologically defined premalignant lesions in the breast, only a subset of them constitute true neoplastic precursors that will progress to invasive cancer. Disappointingly, it is currently not conceivable to identify a priori, with absolute certainty, which of these precursors will progress and which not. Therefore, classifying risk indicators, precursors, and non-obligate precursors of invasive breast cancer, and ultimately define robust protocols for their clinical management, is a hot topic in the multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer patients, that involves pathologists, radiologists, surgeons, and oncologists

Advances in Early Breast Cancer Risk Profiling: From Histopathology to Molecular Technologies

    No full text
Early breast cancer (BC) is the definition applied to breast-confined tumors with or without limited involvement of locoregional lymph nodes. While risk stratification is essential for guiding clinical decisions, it can be a complex endeavor in these patients due to the absence of comprehensive guidelines. Histopathological analysis and biomarker assessment play a pivotal role in defining patient outcomes. Traditional histological criteria such as tumor size, lymph node involvement, histo- logical type and grade, lymphovascular invasion, and immune cell infiltration are significant prog- nostic indicators. In addition to the hormone receptor, HER2, and—in specific scenarios—BRCA1/2 testing, molecular subtyping through gene expression profiling provides valuable insights to tailor clinical decision-making. The emergence of “omics” technologies, applicable to both tissue and liquid biopsy samples, has broadened our arsenal for evaluating the risk of early BC. However, a pressing need remains for standardized methodologies and integrated pathological models that encompass multiple analytical dimensions. In this study, we provide a detailed examination of the existing strategies for early BC risk stratification, intending to serve as a practical guide for histopathologists and molecular pathologists

Centralization versus decentralization of marketing activities in leading Italian firms

    No full text
International and multinational companies are showing an increasing interest in developing global strategies, that is, in taking integrated and globally uniform approaches to their strategy and planning process. There have been a number of studies discussing the merits of a global versus a local approach. However, none of these studies have empirically tested the complex implementation issues of a global marketing strategy, let alone an integrated global marketing strategy (Sheth,2001; Guerini 2006, 2007). Therefore a thorough analysis and research of global marketing operations integration is definitely needed. The framework of this paper is constructed on the basis of multi-disciplinary prior research by the author. Moreover, integrating marketing with further inter- and intra- functional activities, on a worldwide scale, involves some understanding of various issues in international business, including organization theory, trade theory, strategic management, marketing organization and strategy, social sciences, and an understanding of behavioral, relationship and cultural issues. The first part briefly reviews the main concepts regarding those theories in order to establish a conceptual foundation of the study. It then outlines the research questions and methodology, and the proposed output. The second part analyzes five Italian companies in order to gain a sound understanding of how and why Italian companies are implementing an integrated global marketing approach. The strategy used is a combination of case study research and archival analysis. The third part shows the main findings of the research and its limitations
