Forming synchronous and asynchronous learning networks utilizing internet has been simplified by new technologies. The present study investigated the effects of learners’ choice of cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies on vocabulary gain and retention levels in the e-learning context. 180 participants took part in this study and 120 audio podcasts plus still and animated pictures were presented to the participants in the Telegram channel. 23 strategy items on a 5-point Likert scale were presented to the participants by means of a voting robot system on the main page of the channel after the treatment. Additionally, an immediate as well as a delayed vocabulary posttest in the form of multiple-choice were administered, separately. Four one-way ANOVAs were run in order to answer the questions. The results revealed that the choice of cognitive strategy significantly affected the level of vocabulary gain and retention. In other words, learners who applied more cognitive strategies had higher levels in vocabulary gain and retention. However, the choice of meta-cognitive strategy had no considerable influence on vocabulary gain and retention

The significance and impact of vocabulary learning in reading comprehension and L2 language learning are apparent to teachers, researchers and language learners. Moreover, glosses are found as one of the most effective strategies regarding vocabulary retention. Therefore, the present study attempted to investigate the effect of different types of glosses on reading comprehension, vocabulary gain and vocabulary retention. To this end, 140 Iranian EFL learners learning English were selected and were divided into four groups (footnote gloss group, interlinear gloss group, marginal gloss group, and glossary group). They were required to read a text and answer four reading comprehension questions. In addition, one immediate vocabulary post-test and one delayed vocabulary post-test were taken in order to investigate learners' vocabulary gain and vocabulary retention. In order to analyze the data, one one-way ANOVA and one MANOVA were run. The results of one-way ANOVA revealed that participants who received interlinear glosses significantly outperformed the other groups regarding comprehending the text. Moreover, the immediate vocabulary post-test was conducted immediately after reading test and the delayed post-test was administered after four weeks. The results of MANOVA indicated that the group which received interlinear glosses outperformed the other groups in both vocabulary gain and vocabulary retention. The present study has implications for teachers and learners. Teachers can find better methods to teach new reading passages as well as vocabulary items. Also, glosses help learners to have a better comprehension of difficult passages and they facilitate learning. Moreover, learners can enhance their vocabulary knowledge with the help of glosses

The advent of new technologies and rapid growth of online distance education have fostered interaction as well as collaboration among learners and created a true learning community. Moreover, forming synchronous and asynchronous learning networks utilizing the Internet have been simplified by new technologies. Since the importance of technology is undeniable, teachers and instructors must use it to create new opportunities and experiences for educators. The present study investigates the use of audio podcast plus still pictures and audio podcasts plus animated pictures on learners’ vocabulary gain and retention in a process-oriented approach. The results indicate that the participants who received audio plus animated pictures had higher levels of vocabulary gain as well as retention. The present study showed that podcasting is an influential tool to course resources and increases the contact between students and teachers

The present study was conducted in order to identify the relationship among autonomy, critical thinking ability and listening comprehension ability of Iranian EFL learners. 114 male and female learners learning English as a foreign language participated in the present study. The obtained data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and One-Way ANOVA. The results of the present study indicated that there was a significant positive relationship between autonomy and critical thinking ability of learners. Moreover, the results of One-Way ANOVA revealed that learners with high autonomy level had the best listening comprehension ability. Furthermore, learners with high critical thinking ability had high listening comprehension ability.

Wedding Invitation is one of the important text genres. Having drawn on Swales' (1990) genre analysis approach and Kress and Van Leeuwen's (1996) multimodality point of view on textual analysis, one case study has been conducted. The present study analyzed various expressions of wedding invitation genres in Iran in order to find generic and schematic structures as well as linguistic features in them and also communicative functions which were expressed by their generic components. Therefore, a corpus of 200 wedding invitations was randomly selected. Similarities and differences were found. The results revealed eight moves out of which one was optional. Moreover, the wedding invitation card pockets were analyzed and five moves have been found out of which three were optional. Furthermore, the lexico-grammatical features and schematic structure illustrated a series of socio-cultural values as well as Iranian and Islamic norms regarding men and women

    Get PDF
Distance education is a development in teaching and learning. Learners work and learn on their own at a distance from teachers and instructors with a degree of independence. The most important problem confronted by EFL learners is that they do not have enough time to be present in classes and they want to be taught through distance language education. The present study is an investigation of the effect of Iranian EFL learners’ attitude regarding their distance vocabulary gain and retention. 180 participants took part in the present study. Two separate one-way multivariate analysis of variance (one-way MANOVA) were run in order to answer the questions. Results revealed that attitude levels significantly affected Iranian EFL learners’ vocabulary gain and retention. The participants who had higher attitude levels had higher levels of vocabulary gain as well as retention applying audio podcasts plus still pictures and audio podcasts plus animated pictures

Everyday Resistance Against the Mandatory Hijab and the Lack of Collective Solidarity in Iran

    Get PDF
The mandatory hijab in Iran serves as a symbol of social control over women, leading to individual and everyday forms of resistance. This article employs James Scott’s theory of “everyday resistance” alongside Hannah Arendt’s concept of “individuality” to explore why these acts of resistance remain fragmented and largely ineffective. The analysis reveals that the severe repression of protests and the imposition of a passive individuality by the Islamic Republic of Iran hinder the formation of collective action and effective solidarity among women. A firsthand account witnessed by the author describes a violent confrontation between the Gasht-eErshad (morality police) and a woman without the mandatory hijab, highlighting the absence of collective support from bystanders. Ultimately, this article emphasizes the need to strengthen collective solidarity to achieve more effective resistance by women
