Volunteering down Dixie
A satire on Southern recruitment efforts during the early part of the Civil War. In a scene before a Confederate encampment, a reluctant civilian (center) is presented with a musket and military coat by two veteran soldiers, one wearing an absurdly tall fur hat. The recruit is restrained from behind by another officer. In the background left a troop of recruits drill; on the right two blacks soldiers, one with rolled pantlegs and military coat, look on with amusement.Printed and copyrighted by Ehrgott & Forbriger, Cincinnati.The Library's impression of the print was deposited for copyright on July 8, 1861, by the Cincinnati lithographic firm of Ehrgott & Forbriger. It is clearly by the same unidentified artist as two other prints by Ehrgott & Forbriger, "Strayed" and "Ye Conference" (nos. 1861-31 and 1861-32). Two additional prints, not owned by the Library but cited by Weitenkampf, are also listed in the copyright records as Ehrgott & Forbriger registrations. They are "That Feed Won't Do" and ""Wait 'Till the War Is Over."" Strayed
An exultant view of the rout, by Union forces commanded by Capt. Nathaniel Lyon, of troops under Gen. Sterling Price and Claiborne F. Jackson at Boonville, Missouri, in June 1861. Jackson, the secessionist governor of Missouri, had been driven from the state capital, Jefferson City. He and other members of his government retreated along with Confederate commander Price and his troops. Overtaken by Lyon at Boonville on June 17, they were then forced to flee in separate directions. The artist makes a play on a commonplace of the time--the public notice of strayed animals. Jackson is the subject of this notice. He is portrayed here as an ass, strayed "from the neighbourhood of Boonville, Mo. on the 18th inst[ant] a mischievous JACK who was frightened and run away from his Leader by the sudden appearance of a Lion." The notice continues "He is of no value whatever and only a low Price can be given for his capture. [Signed:] Sam." On the outskirts of the city, the ass stands on top of a small rise, clearly alarmed by the approach of federal troops led by a lion (Lyon). On the right a terrified General Price crouches (apparently defecating) as his panicked troops flee in the background.Entered . . . 1861 . . . Cardinality constrained minimum cut problems: complexity and algorithms
In several applications the solutions of combinatorial optimization problems (COP) are required to satisfy an additional cardinality constraint, that is to contain a fixed number of elements. So far the family of (COP) with cardinality constraints has been little investigated. The present work tackles a new problem of this class: the k- cardinality minimumc ut problem (k-card cut). For a number of variants of this problem we show complexity results in the most significant graph classes. Moreover, we develop several heuristic algorithms for the k-card cut problem for complete, complete bipartite, and general graphs. Lower bounds are obtained through an SDP formulation, and used to show the quality of the heuristics. Finally, we present a randomized SDP heuristic and numerical results
Optimisation of mould filling parameters of the compression resin transfer moulding process
The Compression Resin Transfer Moulding Process (CRTM) is a popular type of Liquid Composite Moulding Process (LCM) commonly used for manufacturing composite materials. In this paper we consider the optimisation of the manufacturing processing time and the machine tooling force for the CRTM process. Since this process requires large forces during compression, force evaluation and prediction provides great advantages for the industry as it enables structural analysis of the moulds. Not only it does lead to cost effective tooling design, it also allows for proper selection of cost effective moulds and supporting equipment. The tooling force, moreover, is in conflict with manufacturing time, which is another objective of particular interest in the industry. In recent years, the advancement of CRTM simulation software allows accurate prediction of the processing objectives thus making it unnecessary to run through the expensive experiments physically. In this process, we use such a simulation software called SimLCM and combine it with a popular NSGA-II evolutionary multi-objective optimisation (EMO) algorithm to optimise maximum tooling force and processing time with respect to three manufacturing parameters. The EMO algorithm uses SimLCM as a black box to evaluate the objective function values for a population of solutions. We report results on a simple rectangular plate model (for calibration) and an industrial example

Continuous multiobjective programming
We present our view of the state of the art in continuous multiobjective programming. After an introduction we formulate the multiobjective program (MOP) and define the most important solution concepts in Sect. 18.2. In Sect. 18.3 we summarize properties of efficient and nondominated sets. Optimality conditions are reviewed in Sect. 18.4. The main part of the chapter consists of Sects. 18.5 and 18.6 that deal with solution techniques for MOPs and approximation of efficient and nondominated sets. In Sect. 18.7 we discuss specially-structured problems including linear, nonlinear, parametric, and bilevel MOPs. In Sect. 18.8 we present our perspective on future research directions
