    Archaeological Investigations Project (AIP)

    No full text
The Archaeological Investigations Project (AIP), funded by English Heritage and Historic England, systematically collected information about the nature and outcomes of more than 80,000 archaeological projects undertaken in England between 1990 and 2010, the currency of Planning Policy Guidance Note 16: Archaeology and Planning (generally known as PPG16) that was published in November 1990. The AIP aimed to document as many archaeological investigations as possible, many of which would otherwise have remained invisible to the archaeological community and the wider public, through accessing limited availability Grey Literature reports held by archaeological contractors and curators. Whilst the AIP did not collate a library of such reports, it signposted their locations. Data was gathered directly from those who undertook the work, either from their reports or by visiting organizations across England. Records of investigations and events created by AIP have been incorporated, indexed, and cross-referenced within a range of on-line resources including: the English Heritage Excavations Index (formerly the RCHME Excavation Index) now archived at the ADS (http://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/archives/view/304/) which itself shared data with other on-line resources such as PastScape, Archsearch, and the Heritage Gateway; the British and Irish Archaeological Bibliography (http://www.biab.ac.uk); and the OASIS record maintained by the Archaeology Data Service (http://oasis.ac.uk/pages/wiki/Main). This AIP data archive allows a greater appreciation of the breadth of archaeological work carried out in England during a key period in the emergence of planning-led investigations, and it gives an overview of the impacts that PPG16 had on such projects. This is summarised in the publication which forms the companion to this database, 'Archaeology in the PPG16 Era: Investigations in England 1990-2010' by Timothy Darvill, Kerry Barrass, Vanessa Constant, Ehren Milner, and Bronwen Russell (Oxbow Books 2018)

Ibat obscurus : Benveniste's journey by Jean-Claude Milner

    No full text
This paper proposes a discussion of one of the chapters of the book Le périple structural - Figures et paradigme, published in 2008, by Jean-Claude Milner. It is the text “Benveniste II - Ibat obscurus”, in which the author presents a very particular interpretation of Benveniste's thought. Through a combination of biographical data and the linguist's reasoning, Milner identifies aspects relating to two topics – the Jewish issue, on the one hand, and politics, on the other – not commonly pointed out in his reflection. That is, Milner’s viewpoint involves a methodological perspective that enables theoretical prospecting, the development of new/other interpretations of the linguist's thinking. This study aims to discuss this perspective. To do so, it initially presents the way Milner conceives and organizes his journey. It also discusses the chapter in question more specifically, highlighting the combination established by Milner. Finally, it presents some considerations about this reflection

We present an equational verification of Milner's scheduler, which we checked by computer. To our knowledge this is the first time that the scheduler is proof-checked for a general number n of scheduled processes. Note I: a shorter version of this paper will appear in the Proceedings of TACS'94 (international symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Software, April 1994, Japan), published in LNCS. Note II: the work of the first author took place in the context of EC Basic Research Action 7166 concur 2. The work of the second author is supported by the Netherlands Computer Science Research Foundation (SION) with financial support of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). 1 Introduction The correctness of many protocols crucially depends on the characteristics of data; one can think of the use of natural numbers, modulo calculations, lists, etc. Illustrative examples of such protocols are Milner's Scheduler [16], the Bakery Protocol [9] and the Sliding Window ..

A (Co)algebraic Approach to Hennessy-Milner Theorems for Weakly Expressive Logics

Coalgebraic modal logic, as in [9, 6], is a framework in which modal logics for specifying coalgebras can be developed parametric in the signature of the modal language and the coalgebra type functor T. Given a base logic (usually classical propositional logic), modalities are interpreted via so-called predicate liftings for the functor T. These are natural transformations that turn a predicate over the state space X into a predicate over TX. Given that T-coalgebras come with general notions of T-bisimilarity [11] and behavioral equivalence [7], coalgebraic modal logics are designed to respect those. In particular, if two states are behaviourally equivalent then they satisfy the same formulas. If the converse holds, then the logic is said to be expressive. and we have a generalisation of the classic Hennessy-Milner theorem [5] which states that over the class of image-fjnite Kripke models, two states are Kripke bisimilar if and only if they satisfy the same formulas in Hennessy-Milner logic

Exploring the social use of space using principles of relativity.

This thesis applies a new application for old scientific principles based on a philosophical extension of Einstein's theory of relativity for Space-Time. With Einstein's physics, space and time are relative to the observer. Comparisons of house floors by relativity is achieved with a mathematically based procedure that places a universal point of observation within all structures based upon the centroid of the structure itself. The data is transformed so that all structures can be placed upon the same axial alignment and sampled for spatial correlations by Principal Components Analysis (PCA), relative to each structure's space. A further method Selective Centric Morphology (SCM) created for this study, places the point of observation as that relative for archaeological interpretations. In this study, the centre of the hearth acts as a centre of social activity and all space is transformed around this point of observation. This enables the ability to apply statistical tests that can be linked to spatial distributions, to compare known quantities against archaeological examples, and to directly make intersite comparisons beyond an anecdotal level. A test case, Kilpheder House 500, has archaeological distributions of objects related to food storage (pottery) and preparation (flint or unbumt bone) within house floors tested against models of longhouses and round/wheel houses to determine group membership. The longhouses tested against were formed from twelve expert models and a synthesis Cognitive Model. The round/wheel houses tested against were Black Patch (East Sussex, England), Catpund (Shetland, Scotland), Sollas (North Uist, Scotland), Stenness House 1, 3, 6 and 10 (Orkney, Scotland). This thesis found that with transformations by both relativity and SCM, the strongest correlations for Kilpheder House 500 were with the longhouse expert models and has a likely group membership with longhouses. In this study, mathematical transformations allowed intersite cases to be examined directly against each other. The transformation of space into a universal framework will offer archaeologists the ability to make precise mathematical comparisons between relative spaces. This not only offers the ability to make comparisons of multi-dimensional data-sets as a means of understanding the social use of space in archaeologically recovered buildings but can be applied to any area with clear boundaries where spatial comparisons can aid interpretation. Future work may make it possible to determine archaeological taxonomic memberships with these methods

Marion Milner e a clínica da criatividade: estilo, ética e técnica

    No full text
Finalmente são apresentadas as questões da ética e técnica psicanalíticas, isto é, a posição da autora em relação ao enquadre analítico, sua instalação e sustentação, a função analítica e suas eventuais modificaçõesAroused by the interest of studying the role of the arts in everyday life and in the therapeutic space and to deepen the study of creativity in these two fields, the objective of this research is to present the ideas and insights of the British psychoanalyst and artist Marion Milner about psychic phenomena, the therapeutic process and how they greatly expanded the scope of creativity in psychoanalysis. The study demonstrates how her work emphasizes the role of creativity and aesthetic experience in favoring the psychic growth, both the patient and the analyst, and as the psychoanalytic encounter is seen in terms of aesthetic value. The research consists of a historiographical hermeneutical study of the works of Marion Milner, through a reading that seeks to contextualize her thought on the history of psychoanalysis and a certain "school" to which she belonged in attempt to reveal the development of the of the author s thinking, since the previous moments to her psychoanalytic training until it full development. At specific times, a deconstructive reading, problematizing and interpreting is made for understanding internal strains contained in the author s thinking. The dissertation starts with a brief biography of Marion Milner and her four autobiographies, illustrating the intense research on her own subjective experience and it s influence in all the route of her career. It also presents the theory of creativity proposed by the author starting from William Blake s illustrations to the book of Job followed by the great clinical case that highlighted her as a psychoanalyst, in which is possible to follow the conditions for the emergence of creativity, also bringing a deep reflection on the fundamental problems of the constitution of the human psyche. Finally it presents the issues of ethics and psychoanalytic technique, namely the author's position regarding the analytical setting, its installation and sustain; the analytic function and possibles adjustmentsConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológic
