Letter from Irene Edwards for Senator Langer to R. W. Quinn Regarding Possible Loan for Ramona Bearquiver, October 26, 1953

    No full text
This letter, dated October 26, 1953, from Irene Edwards, secretary to United States (US) Senator William Langer, to R. W. Quinn, Superintendent of the Forth Berthold Agency, makes reference to a letter, which Edwards has enclosed, received by Langer\u27s office from Ramona L. S. Bearquiver of Hayward, California, inquiring about any per capita payment to which she or her family may be entitled and about a loan through the agency. Edwards writes that she would very much appreciate having Quinn\u27s advice in this matter, and asks him to return the enclosed letter with his reply. The letter Edwards refers to as being enclosed was not found with this letter in Langer\u27s papers. Kilback Each school year brings new challenges to students and staff, requiring fresh approaches to old problems, and a revised perspective on essential goals. We have struggled this year with development of course objectives and evaluation plans, with more weighty final exams, and a different budgetting system. The School Board is holding regular meetings in the various schools, thus enabling members to become more familiar with daily operations. The cafeteria committee, under sponsorship of the senior students council, is continuing to provide an effective and satisfying service to the students and staff. We are anticipating a substantial upgrading of the cafeteria facilities to further improve this function. Our extra-curricular scene has been very exciting and impressive this year, with outstanding accomplishment in sports, the fine arts and other activities. We appreciate all the students, teachers and other persons who have assisted with coaching and supervising various events during the year. Our instructional program, with its breadth of academic and vocational-type courses, need periodic assessment in terms of value to students and congruence with school and community objectives. Again, thanks to our Yearbook Committee and their advisor, Mr. Hart, for another quality production. ^^•■■■•■■■^■■■■■■■••HMrtMMMMHMIHM^_ __^____i___-_^_i—_— 67 Science: L. to R: Del Cleland, Rex Anderson, Dale Lusk, Dick Robinson, and Ken Lawson. During the assembly, grade seven students participated in such activities as walking races and wheelbarrow races, and wheelbarrow races. Mrs. West, Mrs. Jones, and several grade seven students put on a variety program. Also during the assembly, Mr. Hagel was presented with a tray in appreciation of his work with junior high in the past. "Welcome Back Day" was a large success and was enjoyed by everyone. 1 1 AWARDS NIGHT Among those receiving recognition at W.R. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE "take care of yourself, ya hear!" Left to Right: J. Ginther, Sports; D. Sheen, Clubs; P. Antoniuk, Pub; T. Gillespie, Pres.; B. Kilback, 1st Vice; N. Sakamoto, Soc. Con.; D. Oliver, Advisor; E. Hanna, Sec.; S. Campbell, Pep; C. Zelenka, Grad; C. Smith, Grad; M. Kern, Tres.; (N.P. ) L. Pylypow, 2nd Vice (N.P.). PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE This is not the president's message I wanted to print. The president's message I wanted to print was to my fellow graduates ... a kind of "take care of yourself, ya hear". But then the editors of this book didn't want that as a president's message. "Tell us what council is going to do this year", they said. So even though this is really the editors' message I'm still president and I'm writing it, so it's a president's message (I think). Although we've got some objectives, one dance per month, and graduation, we can hardly say that will happen, mainly because we don't know what the students want to do. Our purpose after all, is to serve the students and hopefully make them say thirty years from now, "Yup, old Myers School was a pretty good place back in 77-78". So, that's my president's - editors' - president's message. Don't look for a sequel. Tom Gillespie P.S. "Take care of yourself, ya hear." 14 JR. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE JUNIOR PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE We, the junior council, are responsible for giving the students an enjoyable school year. Arranging social activities, dress-up days, and assemblies is mostly on our hands. We, however, can only produce these activities; you, the students and teachers, must take part. Having a good year means participation by both students and teachers. Activities such as dances, basketball games, and other sports may seem only for the benefit of the students, but are for the teachers as well. Dress-up days include both teachers and students to develop our school spirit. As you can see, one of our major goals is to unite the students and teachers through various activities. To conclude the season, an invitational tournament was held. Here, Myers advanced to the finals but were defeated. The team was coached by Mrs. T. Malensky. 43 This Year, the Trotters competed in a Southern 3A Basketball League. The team had a record of 3 wins and 7 losses in this new league, which involves teams from Medicine Hat, Coaldale, and Brooks. The team competed with Barnwell, St. Mary's and Grassy Lake during league play and finished with a 4 win, 2 loss record. At an exhibition game, the girls played against Raymond, Brooks, and emerged victorious. Myers' Ski Club enjoyed a very successful year this season, with an increase in members to 47, and SNOW in the mountains for a change. The club kicked off its season with fund raising campaigns in the fall. It ran a concession for the post-season volleyball tourney, catered to a staff luncheon, and held a bake sale. As we decided to go in style this year, we said "No" to the Community Club bus and travelled via Greyhound to Fernie in December and January for one day trips. We wound up the season with a super weekend trip to Kimberley and Fernie in March. Highlights of the year: - Mr. C. got his new poles ripped off in Kimberly. - Allan Mills "Man, this trip was a slice! ! " - Craig Martens at top of Bear: "You've gotta be kidding! !" - John Lothian after he fell and twisted his ankle: Awx! ! ??x! ! Though large in number the club is not, its members have a great deal of fun and at the same time, learn a thing or two. The goal is not necessarily to develop skills for competition but rather to develop strength and muscle tone while at the same time achieving gymnastic proficiency. At the annual talent night, the club demonstrated its capabilities by performing on the parallel bars. The club operated from December to April this year, and will do the same next year, hopefully with a few more members. F. R., L. to R.: C. Nishima, T. Kanamata, J. Hooge, C. Maruyama, J. KTIV REACH FOR THE TOP After several weeks of arduous practice, our team took part in the Southern Zone Playoffs held in Lethbridge on February 3 and 4. CHILDREN S THEATER The success or failure of any drama class is directly related to the attitude of the enrolled students. They must be enthusiastic about the activities and be willing to work co-operatively. This year's classes were of very high caliber because the students were receptive to the precept that; "You only get out of a drama class what you put into it. " Their enthusiasm provided the kind of atmosphere in which creativity flourished. The pictures on this page were taken during a performance at St. Mary's kindergarten. Myers drama students have entertained hundreds of young students over the past several years. Prospective students often ask the question, "Will we be doing Children's Theater?" before deciding to to enroll in the class or not. This attests to the popularity of this kind of performance. Two Myers drama students, Harvey Tams and Colleen Arnett entered drama competitions in Taber and Edmonton. Harvey took first place in local competition and both competitors received high praise from the adjudicators in Edmonton. It was a good year! 62 ACTIVITIES JR. HIGH BAND AND CHORUS The Junior High C

A major event this year was the comprehensive school evaluation by personnel from the Regional Office. The evaluation identified certain areas of program, procedures, equipment, and physical facilities which needed attention by the staff and school board. Another development was action by the school board to assure greater control over students behaviour. Related to this issue was the formation of a parent/student/teacher advisory committee for consideration of matters of common concern, and participation by many parents in noon supervision throughout the winter months. The popular movement this year was "back to the basics," with its conflicting interpretations and viewpoints. A gradual change to a more highly structured curriculum is evident, with increased emphasis on standardized testing at various grade levels. However, what is basic to one expert may be a

'Giving honour to the Spirit' : a critical analysis and evaluation of the doctrine of pneumatological union in the Trinitarian theology of Jonathan Edwards in dialogue with Karl Barth

The extent to which the 'honour' of the Spirit influenced the theology of Jonathan Edwards is a hitherto underdeveloped theme. Against a backdrop of Patristic thought and in dialogue with the theology of Karl Barth, evaluation is made of pneumatological union in Edwards' Trinitarian theology as this centres on the nature and inter-relatedness of the 'three unions' that characterize his theology: the union of the three Persons of the Trinity, the union of the saints with God, and the union of the divine and human natures of Christ. Edwards' seeks to honour the Spirit as the mutual love of the Father for the Son within his Augustinian, Lockean model of the immanent Trinity, and as 'Person' in the economy. The challenges of doing so within the limits of this psychological model of the Trinity are evaluated in dialogue with the Cappadocian Fathers and Barth. In a manner patterned after union in the Trinity, Edwards gave prominence to the concept of the pneumatological union of the saints with God in Christ, in fulfilment of the self-glorifying purpose of God in creation and redemption. Edwards' experiential theology of conversion, and his elevation of subjective sanctification by the Spirit over objective justification in Christ, for assurance, is contrasted with Barth's greater emphases on the Christological union of God with humanity and objective justification in Christ. Barth's more contemplative approach is contrasted with the overly introspective spirituality of Edwards. Edwards' view of the role of the Spirit in the hypostatic union of God with humanity in Christ, which is reflective of the other unions, is also evaluated in light of Patristic, Reformed-Puritan and Barthian thought on the nature of the humanity Christ assumed, and the doctrine of the vicarious humanity of Christ. A more emphatic incarnational emphasis may have saved Edwards' Spirit- honouring spirituality from an anthropocentricity which is ironical given that the glory of God is his ontic doxological concern

M is what we can all acheive" A Mature Outlook On Life... PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Our Yearbook has come of age! It is gratifying to note that in the last couple of years deadlines have been met and the student committee has accepted real responsibility for the publication. And incredible as it may appear, the yearbook account should show a moderate surplus this year. A cooperative effort has paid off! Thanks are due to the advisor Mr. Morrison, to the student’s councils for allocating special funds, to the publisher’s representatives for their guidance, and especially to the yearbook committees for their committment and determination. However, the future of our current school program does not look so bright. In recent years the opertional costs haf have escalated along with rising costs everywhere. Inflation has taken its toll—decreasing purchasing power for supplies and replacement of equipment. We have six fewer teachers than we had five years ago, although our average yearly enrolment has not declined in that proportion. It has become increasingly difficult to maintain a broad program for the benefit of students with diverse needs and interests. Many classes are larger than they should be for effective teaching and learning; some classes in special interest areas may be too small to justify in strictly economic terms, but justifiable in terms of opportunities for non academically - oriented students. Provincial funding does not appear to be geared to a sufficiently high priority for education. The quality and extent of programs are bound to be affected. I expect that in the next few years the question of local priorities will become much more urgent, and that decisions may be made concerning substantial reduction or elimination of certain programs. If present trends continue there is a high probability that W. R, Myers will become essentially an academic Junior/ Senior high school simply because the operational costs per student per year are thereby minimized. Although there may be little argument over the need to main maintain a basic core academic program, there is likely to be much anxiety and stress when it comes to areas such as industrial arts, home economics, business education, art and music. What criteria will be used to judge their comparative educational values? Will comparative financial costs be the crucial factor? In the final analysis we must all face this question: How important is the school, and what do we want it to do for our students? R. Myers High School on June 23, 1975 en route to Calgary airport. Wardair took efficient care of us and all our baggage, and once installed inside the 747, Myer's students lost no time im getting down to the business of eating, drinking, and trying to impress the stewardesses. The night was very short flying at 35000 feet and the next morning with the sun shining down on the green fields, our plane touched down at Gatwich airport, 40 miles south of London. There we were met by 2 buses and their drivers, Phil and Sinclair, who stayed with us throughout the entire 3 weeks. Suffice it to say that Phil and Sine turned out to be not only excellent drivers in England's congested traffic, but travel counsellors, baggage handlers, and our most enthusiastic applauders at every concert. It is impossible to summarize the varied activities of three weeks in a few short paragraphs. However some over-riding impressions remain: The support from the community, the unity which developed between student, teacher and parent, and the work of the executive committee were the three main factors in the success of the project The thrill of performing to capacity audiences nearly everywhere we went; the chance to look at a foreigh educational system; the chance to view Taber and our life style from a distance and to compare it with another. These were experiences not commonly met with in day to day life. The trip helped to invest the music program at the school with a certain amount of prestige. It also laid an excellent groundwork of cooperation amoug parents of music students—a spirit that has been carried on further this year by the Myers Music Association add those whose liaison in the future may help to benefit the music program at Myers still more. Malcolm EdwardsThe "Kissing Boulder" strikes again TRIP TO SPOKANE The highlight of the Chorus and Band classes this year was without doubt the trip to Spokane from Hay fifth to the eighth. Three buses left with one hundred and forty student plus Hr.

It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin' Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much. On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to the profession I love and shaped who I have become. At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle." Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality! Take care, Ken Pon Principal Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient. Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient: Have the courage to be imperfect Take time for yourself Sign up for that course, join that club Be active every day in as many ways as you can Spend time with people who make you feel good Laugh out loud each day Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat) Do one thing now that you've been putting off Focus more on things you can control Remember, this too shall pass (~https://wayahead.org.au/get-the-facts/building-resilience/) Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on this decision (love it/dislike it etc). A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor, Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook. Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases, does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the message being shared. But very thankfully, and in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport. The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football, volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of dedication to High School Sport! Vince Gassi, a composer from Toronto, was commissioned by the W.R. Myers Band Parent Association to write a piece for the Concert Band. The band students met with Mr. Gassi via Zoom in October to talk to him about the piece and the writing process. He completed the piece for us in January and we began working on it. Again the band students met with Mr. Gassi on Zoom for him to listen to us play and give feedback. But unfortunately due to the COVID restrictions, we were unable to premier the piece. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's, industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student Learning. ^ef Keira1' created all of these masterpieces during 'Round 1' of Covid shutdown. The group was divided into approximately four equal teams. The awesome team 4, led by Mr. Koski, were the fastest at passing the bucket from the ballpark to the hilltop. Therefore, they were also the first to fill their 5 gallon bucket and win the event. The next event, the log race, saw teams 4 and 2 tie. The team had to carry their log from the ballpark, through the camp area, and then across the river. The first team to get 25 members across won. The four teams had a contest in which team #3 emerged victorious. To end it all, the school split into two teams for the last tug-off of the day. To everyone’s astonishment, the rope broke leaving the competitors piled like dominoes. Top left: Clayton Young’s version of a rubber duckie. Top right: Neil Powell pours the winning bucket. Students and teachers got in and found out how much fun pep rallies can be. Contests, plays and presentations have all been part of making our pep rallies the greatest. One of the memorable pep rallies was the one at the beginning of our 1982 school year. During this, the grade 12 victoriously won the pyramid contest and the grade 11 won the rowdy flag award. The P.E. 20-30 class also performed their aerobics for us. The Christmas assembly was just as fun. Presentations were made to teachers by none other than Santa Claus. This pep rally ended with the whole student body joining in and singing Christmas carols. Student pep rallies this year have really been a success and have shown that W. R. The diplomas we will receive attest to the proficiency and application during our high school years. With the support of those people gathered here this evening, we have attained the credentials to go on to meet the new challenges which lie ahead of us. Yet this evening is not without a touch of sadness. This is the last opportunity we shall have to meet as students and it may well be the last occasion at which all of will be present. Because this may be our final meeting together, it might be well to look over the road we have just travelled. Three years ago we entered high school perhaps with a trace of hesistance and uncertainty about our immediate outlook as students. Gradually we put to rest those uncertainties and went on to acquire the education and training that we had sought. Another group of benefits, not so easily measured were also acquired along the way. I refer to such things as the ability to get along with one another. To understand better the word “sportsmanship”. To have clearer the appreciation of the rewards which result from perserverance and application. Those of us who, perhaps a bit skeptically entered this school three years ago, have learned today that there is a reward for effort, and that only real effort produces a genuine reward. Success and achievement is seldom the product of just one’s own efforts. Therefore our thoughts turn to those people who contributed the most to our individual successes. I refer of course to our teachers and parents who often had to scold, conjole, console, and through it all lend guidance and support. Perhaps our expressions of gratitude can best be manifested in the coming years by whatever accomplishments that may become ours. Soon it will be time to pursue new goals. We will face them with optimism, with courage, with determination. Each one of us will soon begin a journey alone toward a chosen task in life. The journey may not always be without its difficulties and temporary setbacks, however, I am confident the virtues and principles which have been bestowed upon us in the past will serve as well in the future. Shortly the vacant places we leave behind tonight will be filled by others, just as eager, just as anxious, just as determined to succeed. It is our sincere wish that all the pleasant and valuable experiences which have been ours, will in due course be theirs. When their turn comes may they be as sorry to leave as we are this evening. This might well be termed the year of Com-prehensives and Computers. On the one hand we are confronted with a set of external exams and significantly higher requirements for obtaining a high school diploma. The greatest impact will be felt by the lower-achieving students who may have to accept some alternative other than the previously anticipated diploma. On the other hand, we see some exciting possibilities for incorporating computer technology into instructional and administrative procedures. During this time of economic restraint, we are faced with a need to carefully examine priorities in our school program and to select those activities which will provide most educational benefit to our students. This assessment is reflected in decisions as to how budget dollars are expended for supplies, equipment, and student travel. Special events have included the Day at the Park, the trip to Europe, and presentations by Rick’s College and the Covenant Players. The Graduation Committee has again worked diligently to prepare for an important and colorful annual event. Our inter-school sports programs have once more been highly successful, thanks to the tremendous efforts of our students and their coaches and to substantial community support. The fine arts programs in music, art, and drama are a very worthwhile complement to our academic core. A stage band for students with special interests, and scheduled in addition to regular band, has made exemplary contributions to the school. In home economics, industrial arts, and business education, our students have received practical knowledge and skills applicable to direct job opportunities or in preparation for further training. The new Vandalism Reduction program has succeeded threefold — property damage has decreased, students are assuming greater responsibility for their behavior, and Students Council has benefited from the money saved and contributed by the School Board. Under the direction of C. Hart, the students in our small Journalism class have included in their productions a weekly column for the Taber Times, several editions of a school newspaper, and the Yearbook itself. We extend sincere thanks and appreciation to this class for their outstanding quality work and performance. — D. Kilback VEGAS BILLIARDS AND ARCADE Weekdays 11 am — 11 pm Sunday 12 pm — 8 pm 43 R. The reaminder of the team were: Lynnece Kerner, Carol Desabrais, Myrna Robinson, Sheila Fujimagari, and Suzanne Vibholm. Our manager this year was Cara- Lee Ireland. Our team started this year off on a good note by winning the preseason tournament. Many tournaments followed, which we also had a great deal of success in. We won the pre-season, post-season, league, and zone tournaments. We placed second in all three Medicine Hat high school tournaments. The season was topped off by us going to provincials and capturing third spot. It has been quite a few years since a girls team from Myers has gone to the provincial tournament, but with the help of a great guy we made it. That great guy is Dennis Fujiamgari, our coach. We would like to extend a special thank-you to him for all the time, effort, and support he gave us. Without him we wouldn’t have made it. We also appreciated all the support from students, teachers, and the parents, we had a good year and a great time. “Thanks, Fuji” Chinook Gardens Restaurant Specializing in Chinese Cuisine Licensed Dining Room Ph. 223-2632 Banquet Facilities — Take Out Service Taber 51 52 MYERS VOLLEYBALL 1982 1982 was supposed to be a poor year for Myers — but somebody forgot to tell the players. Neil Powell was the only returning starter; we had no returning setters; and only nine people showed up at the beginning of the year. Of this nine, one couldn’t handle the practices and quit after the first week, and another was forced to quit early in the season. This left seven players, one more than absolutely necessary, only 2 grade 12’s, 3 grade 1 l’s, and 2 grade 10’s, one returning starter and no setter did not look good. Dick Eto became an instant setter. Setting 200 balls a day and having the same expected of him as we would an experienced setter gave no room to be anything but good. Cam Shields started as a typical grade 11 — good skills but easy to psyche out — not mentally experienced. He caught heck every game for the first half of the season. At the end he could probably take on anybody. Jody Slavik was a grade 10 player who was short. All he had was guts, good coordination, and tremendous strength. Jody got chewed out more than anybody on the team, but he took it, learned and had a tremendous first year. Rob Layton was the surprise I needed. Grade 10’s don’t normally play. The game is new to them, and they don’t have the size, strength, and skill to compete. Rob was tall, strong, coordinated and learned amazingly fast — the best grade 10 player I saw this year. Dave Anderson was a grade 11 player. He started the year with one year of practice under his belt and not one inch taller than grade 10. Nobody expected him to hit, but he could. He was a hustler with a good team attitude. Neil Powell was my only starter. I expected a lot of Neil. When Neil was hot, we won. When he was off, and that happens, we struggled. Neil’s big improvement was in attitude. He was a team leader in practice and was positive to the game all year. Dwight Harris started a year late — his grade
