Genetic Diversity of Two Subpopulations of Black Rhinoceros, Diceros bicornis bicornis, at Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa
No full textDue to international initiatives to increase the efficacy of conservation programs, the critically endangered black rhinoceros is making a tenuous recovery from significant population declines (Emslie & Brooks, 1999). However, as this species has slow maturation and reproduction rates, maximizing the productivity and genetic health of remaining populations is crucial to conserving this iconic animal. Assessing genetic diversity of a threatened population using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), a maternally inherited molecular marker, can elucidate the genetic viability of populations and subsequently inform conservation strategies (Frankham, Ballou & Briscoe, 2010). Using mtDNA this study assessed the genetic diversity of two subpopulations of the southwestern arid subspecies of black rhinoceros, Diceros bicornis bicornis (D. b. bicornis), at Addo Elephant National Park (AENP), South Africa. A total of 112 noninvasively collected fecal samples were assayed including 87 samples from the Nyathi subpopulation, 24 samples from the Addo subpopulation and one sample collected outside of the park. Identities were assigned to the samples when possible. Only two mtDNA D-loop haplotypes were identified. Low genetic diversity of this marker could indicate that the population is at risk of inbreeding (Frankham, Ballou & Briscoe, 2010), which could have serious implications for small populations like the D. b. bicornis at AENP. This study also described a new set of primers that amplify the polymorphic region between the two haplotypes identified at AENP, providing a new tool for managers at the park to monitor the genetic variation within the subpopulations. Although additional genetic testing is recommended to further characterize the genetic diversity of these subpopulations of D. b. bicornis, the data reported in this study provide critical information to the managers at AENP about the potentially limited genetic variation in this important population

No full textCORKSCREW BRIDGE, SYLVAN PASS, ON CODY ROAD INTO YELLOWSTONE PARK. By no means the least colorful part of a visit to Yellowstone Park is reserved to the last, if we leave the National wonderland by the road leading to Cody, Wyo., distant 55 miles from the Eastern Park Entrance. From lake Junction we climb the western slopes of the Absaroka Moutains, catching glorious glimpses across Yellowstone lake of the distant peaks of the Tetons. Presently we pass secluded Sylvan Lake and then come to Sylvan Pass (elev. 8,650 ft.), where we cross the crest of the range between towering peaks whose precipitous sides are covered with vast slides of loose rock which seem to have been deposited there by some herculean stone crusher. The road winding eastward down the pass is a marvel of engineering skill, as is well attested by the "corkscrew" bridge which we see before us. At this point, in order to keep the surface of the highway at a practicable grade down the steep gorge, the road has been constructed to as to literally turn itself in a complete spiral. At the Eastern entrance we pass immediately into the Shoshone National Forest Reserve. The existence on every side of the Park of this and other Forest Reserves, having game protection, accounts in large measure for the almost perfect safety enjoyed by the wild animals in the Park itself. Winding on down the North Fork of the Shoshone River we find ourselves for iles among fantastic rock formations, such as Chimney Rock, The Turtle, Window Rock, Thor's Anvil, The Wooden Shoe, The Goose, Mr. Punch and the Playground of the Gods. No full textSHOSHONE CANYON, DAM AND ROAD, FROM SOUTH RIM OF SHOSHONE RIVER, WYO. The Shoshone Dam, at the foot of the Shoshone Reservoir, furnishes water for one of the greatest irrigation projects in the world. The dam itself, completed in 1916, is 328 ft. in height and it blocks a deep, narrow gorge in the canyon of the Shoshone River, impounding 550,000,000 tons of water which is distributed thorugh canals to irrigate more than 160,000 acres of Wyoming lands. This territory, formerly a desert, has thus been transformed into a garden spot, supporting hundreds of families. Our road, furrowing its way along the side of the immense clifs, passes the dam 7 miles W. of Cody and soon after comes to the town itself. Almost with a sense of surprise, we find ourselves once more among stores and residences and within sound of the trains of theBurlington System. Cody might almost be called the shrine of the Old West. Founded by "Buffalo Bill," Col. Wm. F. Cody, it is permeated with the spirit of the great scout and plainsman, of whom a magnificent equestrian statue by the American sculptress, Mrs. Harry Payne Whitney, stands at the head of the main street, with the towering heights of the mountains in the background. Near it is the buffalo Bill Museum, opened in 1927, where many intimate momentos of the famous Indian fighter are on display. Cody and all that it typifies is a fitting "end of the trail" for those whose senses have become keyed to the glories of the Old and the New West thorugh acquaintance with the greatest glory of them all; the Yellowstone National Park. Relationship Between Base Flow Magnitude and Spring Fish Communities
No full textBase flow is the portion of stream flow attributed to groundwater, and few studies quantify the pure effects of base flow reductions on stream fish communities. Spring complexes within the karst terrains of the Edwards Plateau Region of central Texas offer a unique opportunity to test hypothesized relationships between base flow and stream fish communities. Spring complexes are numerous within the Edwards Plateau, providing multiple independent observations, stable hydrographs dominated by base flow conditions, similar groundwater sources, and support endemic fishes that are associated with the spring complexes (i.e., spring-associated fishes). Primary objectives of this study were to assess spring-associated fish richness, relative abundances, and densities across a gradient of base flow magnitudes with predictions that metrics of spring- associated fish communities would linearly decrease with reductions in base flow. To control potential confounding variables, additional objectives were to test for the presence and strength of parapatry that is hypothesized to exist between spring-associated fishes and riverine-associated fishes (i.e., fishes with distributions not typically associated with spring complexes). Patterns in richness, relative abundances, and densities indicated parapatric distribution between spring-associated and riverine-associated fishes. Strength of parapatry depended upon base flow magnitude. Correspondingly, differences in spring-associated fish richness, relative abundances, and densities along a base flow gradient were detected, but only densities were linearly related to base flow. Richness and relative abundances of spring-associated fishes were non-linearly related to base
flow, suggesting that spring complexes have a level of buffering capacity against base flow reductions. The relationship between spring-associated fish communities and base flow gradient was used to support the reported parapatry between spring-associated fishes and riverine-associated fishes with in the area and to highlight the conservation value of spring complexes to regional fauna. Predictive models generated in this study can be used to evaluate spring-associated fish community integrity within the Edwards Plateau Region and to predict future changes in Edward Plateau spring complexes related to increases in groundwater extraction.Biolog

Hello Rebels Family!
It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the
way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin'
Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams
was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are
jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much.
On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a
bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to
the profession I love and shaped who I have become.
At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an
avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family
strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself
and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."
Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality!

Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our
current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is
for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient.
Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient:
Have the courage to be imperfect
Take time for yourself
Sign up for that course, join that club
Be active every day in as many ways as you can
Spend time with people who make you feel good
Laugh out loud each day
Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat)
Do one thing now that you've been putting off
Focus more on things you can control

Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I
apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any
other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on
this decision (love it/dislike it etc).
A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor,
Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor
for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook.
Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases,
does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with
Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is
that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the

It was a sad reality that we all had to face this year with little to no athletic
competitions across the Province for High School Sport. But very thankfully, and
in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize
and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport.
The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football,
volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our
traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully
that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want
to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to
one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and
a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of
dedication to High School Sport!

The W.R. Myers Concert and
Stage Bands were unable to
perform this year due to COVID,
but we were lucky enough to still
be able to play our instruments.
Vince Gassi, a composer from
Toronto, was commissioned by
the W.R. Myers Band Parent
Association to write a piece for
the Concert Band. The band
students met with Mr. Gassi via
Zoom in October to talk to him
about the piece and the writing
process. He completed the piece
for us in January and we began
working on it. Again the band
students met with Mr. Gassi on
Zoom for him to listen to us play
and give feedback. But
unfortunately due to the COVID
restrictions, we were unable to
premier the piece. Hopefully,
next year we will be able to play
Tomorrow Shines Soon.

..had the opportunity to be a part of the "Minister's Youth Council." The Minister's Youth Council consists of 40 junior and senior high school students (in
Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different
topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's,
industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from
Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student
Learning.

Sayge Turcato was in the Alberta
High School Rodeo Provincials
Finals at the beginning of June
she went into the finals as the
season leader in the Barrel
Racing and she was 8th in
District 1 for the Breakaway
Roping with a few go round wins
she ended up winning the
Alberta Finals in the Barrel
Racing and placing 4th in the
Breakaway. That qualified Sayge
to go to the National High School
Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln,
Nebraska.
Way to go Sayge!!
Kayce Liptak has also had a great showing this year
so far. She placed 2nd at Provincials, just behind
Sayce Turcato. This meant that she also qualified to
go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021
in Lincoln, Nebraska.

after a short shutdown the Lacrosse league got the green light to play. And play they did! If you enjoy watching
playing a high-intensity, high-contact sport, then this is a game for you! With the Lacrosse league in its infancy in
^ber (this is just the second season of play) the team did a stellar job working on basic skills, learning plays, and
Alling as a team unit. They definitely had their ups and downs where the scoreboard was concerned. But considering

No full textAT MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS LOOKING S. W. TO MOUND TERRACE. As we pass into the wonderland of Yellowstone National Park through the North Entrance the first of its marvels which we encounter are the Mammoth Hot Springs, 4.5 miles from the Northern Pacific R. R. station at Gardiner. The scene on which we are looking is therefore sure to be one of the first we shall behold. But before going further it will be well to consider for a moment some general facts about the Park and its conveniences for visitors. Besides the Gardiner Entrace there are three other main entraces, connecting by splendid roads with the Grand Loop system of Park highways. They are: the western or West Yellowstone Entrace, where the Union Pacific R. R. touches the Park border; the eastern or Cody Entrance, served by the Burlington Route at Cody, 55.2 miles E. of the Park and the southern or Snake River Entrance, 178.4 miles by excellent auto road from the Chicago and Northwestern R. R. at Lander, Wyo. The loop system of Park highways consists of 140.6 miles of road, built by the Government, connecting all the principal scenic centers. Four large hotels are maintained in the Park: Mammoth Hotel at Mammoth Hot Springs; Old Faithful Inn at the Upper Geyser basin; Lake Hotel on the N. shore of Yellowstone Lake; and Grand Canyon Hotel near the head of the Grand Canyon. Near each of the hotels is a cabin camp with a lodge containing general accommodations and there are two other lodges; Camp Roosevelt near Tower Falls and Sylvan Pass Lodge at the Eastern Entrace. No full textTwo species of Cakile (Brassicaceae) have been introduced to Australia and the genus has been a common feature on the beaches of NSW for over 130 years; Cakile edentula has been present for at least 148 years (in NSW since about 1870), while Cakile maritima arrived approximately 114 years ago, (in NSW since about 1969). Collections at CANB and NSW confirm that since around 1970 plants more like Cakile maritima have almost entirely replaced Cakile edentula along the NSW coast. A similar phenomenon is reported for Lord Howe Island
