The image ray transform
Image feature extraction is a fundamental area of image processing and computer vision. There are many ways that techniques can be created that extract features and particularly novel techniques can be developed by taking influence from the physical world. This thesis presents the Image Ray Transform (IRT), a technique based upon an analogy to light, using the mechanisms that define how light travels through different media and analogy to optical fibres to extract structural features within an image. Through analogising the image as a transparent medium we can use refraction and reflection to cast many rays inside the image and guide them towards features, transforming the image in order to emphasise tubular and circular structures.The power of the transform for structural feature detection is shown empirically in a number of applications, especially through its ability to highlight curvilinear structures. The IRT is used to enhance the accuracy of circle detection through use as a preprocessor, highlighting circles to a greater extent than conventional edge detection methods. The transform is also shown to be well suited to enrolment for ear biometrics, providing a high detection and recognition rate with PCA, comparable to manual enrolment. Vascular features such as those found in medical images are also shown to be emphasised by the transform, and the IRT is used for detection of the vasculature in retinal fundus images.Extensions to the basic image ray transform allow higher level features to be detected. A method is shown for expressing rays in an invariant form to describe the structures of an object and hence the object itself with a bag-of-visual words model. These ray features provide a complementary description of objects to other patch-based descriptors and have been tested on a number of object categorisation databases. Finally a different analysis of rays is provided that can produce information on both bilateral (reflectional) and rotational symmetry within the image, allowing a deeper understanding of image structure. The IRT is a flexible technique, capable of detecting a range of high and low level image features, and open to further use and extension across a range of applications
Retinal Vessel Extraction with the Image Ray Transform
Extraction of blood vessels within the retina is an important task that can help in detecting a number of diseases, including diabetic retinopathy. Current techniques achieve good, but not perfect performance and this suggests that improved preprocessing may be needed. The image ray transform is a method to highlight tubular features (such as blood vessels) based upon an analogy to light rays. The transform has been employed to enhance retinal images from the DRIVE database, and a simple classification technique has been used to show the potential of the transform as a preprocessor for other supervised learning techniques. A Novel Ray Analogy for Enrolment of Ear Biometrics
The ear is a maturing biometric with qualities that give it superiority over other biometrics in a number of situations; in particular the ear is relatively immune to variation due to ageing. Successful ear biometrics rely upon a well enrolled dataset, with ears normalised for position, scale and rotation. We present a novel ear enrolment technique using the image ray transform, based upon an analogy to light rays. The transform is capable of highlighting tubular structures such as the helix of the ear and spectacle frames and, by exploiting the elliptical shape of the helix, can be used as the basis of a method for enrolment for ear biometrics. The presented technique achieves 99.6% success at enrolment across 252 images of the XM2VTS database, displaying a resistance to confusion with hair and spectacles. These results show great potential for enhancing many other already existing enrolment methods through use of the image ray transform at a preprocessing stage
Plants at risk from climate change
The popular garden flower Cyclamen grows natively in the Mediterranean. Climate change could make the region unsuitable for 18/21 species in 50 years time. Ant-dispersed Cyclamen can’t hope to migrate to suitable new areas without assistance.

Background: The impact of global climate change on plant distribution, speciation and extinction is of current concern. Examining species climatic preferences via bioclimatic niche modelling is a key tool to study this impact. There is an established link between bioclimatic niche models and phylogenetic diversification. A next step is to examine future distribution predictions from a phylogenetic perspective. We present such a study using Cyclamen (Myrsinaceae), a group which demonstrates morphological and phenological adaptations to its seasonal Mediterranean-type climate. How will the predicted climate change affect future distribution of this popular genus of garden plants? 
Results: We demonstrate phylogenetic structure for some climatic characteristics, and show that most Cyclamen have distinct climatic niches, with the exception of several wide-ranging, geographically expansive, species. We reconstruct climate preferences for hypothetical ancestral Cyclamen. The ancestral Cyclamen lineage has a preference for the seasonal Mediterranean climate characteristic of dry summers and wet winters. Future bioclimatic niches, based on BIOCLIM and Maxent models, are examined with reference to a future climate scenario for the 2050s. Over the next 50 years we predict a northward shift in the area of climatic suitability, with many areas of current distribution becoming climatically unsuitable. The area of climatic suitability for every Cyclamen species is predicted to decrease. For many species, there may be no areas with a suitable climate regardless of dispersal ability, these species re considered to be at high risk of extinction. This risk is examined from a phylogenetic
perspective.
Conclusion: Examining bioclimatic niches from a phylogenetic perspective permits novel interpretations of these models. In particular, reconstruction of ancestral niches can provide testable hypothesis about the historical development of lineages. In the future we can expect a northwards shift in climatic suitability for the genus Cyclamen. If this proves to be the case then dispersal is the best chance of survival, which seems highly unlikely for ant-dispersed Cyclamen. Human-assisted establishment of Cyclamen species well outside their native ranges offers hope and could provide the only means of dispersal to potentially suitable future environments. Even without human intervention the phylogenetic perspective demonstrates that major lineages could survive climate change even if many species are lost
The First Cut; the locus of decision at the limits of subjectivity
This project examines the concept of decision in philosophical writing, in particular the question of whether subjectivity can be said to constitute a ‘locus’ of decision. The writing of Søren Kierkegaard is the main focus of discussion. Giorgio Agamben, Michel Henry and Jacques Derrida also provide important contributions.
Although for Kierkegaard ‘all decisiveness is rooted in subjectivity’, subjective agency takes the form of an active surrendering to an external unknown authority (God). Kierkegaard uses the term ‘leap of faith’ to describe the moment of decision where subjective transformation occurs.
For Derrida, any decision requires an undecidable leap beyond all reasoning made in preparation for that decision. He extends a reading of faith beyond the theistic by suggesting that Kierkegaard’s unknowable God could also be another name for the ‘structure of subjectivity.’
Giorgio Agamben’s writing on the concept of human life situated at the threshold of categories (socio-political, philosophical, physiological and so on), helps to further the exploration of subjectivity as the ‘locus’ of decision. Michel Henry’s work on The Essence of Manifestation provides a focus for a discussion on the ‘radical subjectivity’ that Kierkegaard proposes as the fulcrum of decision.
The research project as a whole maintains a synergy between these philosophical concerns and the form of their explication. The thesis is made up of both written text and DVD documentation of live works. These instances of practice, whose form and mode of presentation were informed by a specific aspect of the research, are integrated into the thesis to constitute ‘chapters’. The practice can and does function independently in other contexts. However, what is presented in this research document constitutes the outcome of my practice-based PhD project and includes both the ‘theoretical’ and ‘practice’ elements.

Serum alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme profiles in phenobarbital-treated epileptic dogs
BACKGROUND: Serum total alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity commonly is high in dogs receiving phenobarbital. Specific isoenzymes responsible for this increase are not well documented. OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were 1) to qualitatively and quantitatively describe serum AP isoenzymes in phenobarbital-treated dogs and 2) to monitor changes in serum AP isoenzyme activities associated with phenobarbital treatment over time. METHODS: Serum AP isoenzyme activities were determined in a cross-sectional study of 29 dogs receiving phenobarbital (duration of treatment 2 months to 6.5 years). Additionally, in a prospective study of 23 dogs, serum AP isoenzyme activities were determined before and 3 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months after the start of phenobarbital treatment. Isoenzyme activities were quantitatively determined using wheat germ lectin precipitation and levamisole inhibition, and qualitatively (ie, present or absent) evaluated using cellulose acetate affinity electrophoresis. RESULTS: In phenobarbital-treated dogs with high serum total AP activity in the cross-sectional study, the increase was due predominantly to increased activities of the corticosteroid-induced (C-AP) and liver (L-AP) isoenzymes. Prospectively, serum total AP and L-AP activities were significantly higher at 3 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months after the start of phenobarbital treatment compared with pretreatment values. Serum C-AP and bone isoenzyme (B-AP) activities were significantly higher after 6 and 12 months of treatment. B-AP accounted for only a small amount of the total AP activity. No unusual or previously unidentified AP isoenzymes were identified. CONCLUSIONS: Phenobarbital treatment was associated with increased C-AP and L-AP isoenzyme activities and with a minor increase in B-AP activity. No unique "phenobarbital-induced" isoenzyme was identified. Isoenzyme analysis does not appear to be useful for differentiating between high serum total AP due to phenobarbital therapy and other causes.Source type: Electronic(1
Converging and diverging convection around axisymmetric magnetic flux tubes
A numerical model of idealized sunspots and pores is presented, where axisymmetric cylindrical domains are used with aspect ratios (radius versus depth) up to 4. The model contains a compressible plasma with density and temperature gradients simulating the upper layer of the Sun's convection zone. Non-linear magnetohydrodynamic equations are solved numerically and time-dependent solutions are obtained where the magnetic field is pushed to the centre of the domain by convection cells. This central magnetic flux bundle is maintained by an inner convection cell, situated next to it and with a flow such that there is an inflow at the top of the numerical domain towards the flux bundle. For aspect ratio 4, a large inner cell persists in time, but for lower aspect ratios it becomes highly time dependent. For aspect ratios 2 and 3 this inner convection cell is smaller, tends to be situated towards the top of the domain next to the flux bundle, and appears and disappears with time. When it is gone, the neighbouring cell (with an opposite sense of rotation, i.e. outflow at the top) pulls the magnetic field away from the central axis. As this happens a new inner cell forms with an inflow which pushes the magnetic field towards the centre. This suggests that to maintain their form, both pores and sunspots need a neighbouring convection cell with inflow at the top towards the magnetic flux bundle. This convection cell does not have to be at the top of the convection zone and could be underneath the penumbral structure around sunspots. For an aspect ratio of 1, there is not enough space in the numerical domain for magnetic flux and convection to separate. In this case the solution oscillates between two steady states: two dominant convection cells threaded by magnetic field and one dominant cell that pushes magnetic flux towards the central axis
Effects of season and sample handling on measurement of plasma alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone concentrations in horses and ponies
OBJECTIVE: To investigate effects of sample handling, storage, and collection time and season on plasma alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) concentration in healthy equids. ANIMALS: 11 healthy Standardbreds and 13 healthy semiferal ponies. PROCEDURE: Plasma alpha-MSH concentration was measured by use of radioimmunoassay. Effects of delayed processing were accessed by comparing alpha-MSH concentrations in plasma immediately separated with that of plasma obtained from blood samples that were stored at 4 degrees C for 8 or 48 hours before plasma was separated. Effects of suboptimal handling were accessed by comparing alpha-MSH concentrations in plasma immediately stored at -80 degrees C with plasma that was stored at 25 degrees C for 24 hours, 4 degrees C for 48 hours or 7 days, and -20 degrees C for 30 days prior to freezing at -80 degrees C. Plasma alpha-MSH concentrations were compared among blood samples collected at 8:00 AM, 12 noon, and 4:00 PM. Plasma alpha-MSH concentrations were compared among blood samples collected in January, March, April, June, September, and November from horses and in September and May from ponies. RESULTS: Storage of blood samples at 4 degrees C for 48 hours before plasma was separated and storage of plasma samples at 4 degrees C for 7 days prior to freezing at -80 degrees C resulted in significant decreases in plasma alpha-MSH concentrations. A significantly greater plasma alpha-MSH concentration was found in September in ponies (11-fold) and horses (2-fold), compared with plasma alpha-MSH concentrations in spring. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Handling and storage conditions minimally affected plasma alpha-MSH concentrations. Social media micro-film marketing by Chinese destinations: The case of Shaoxing
Marketing destinations by micro-films via social media is becoming more popular among Chinese destinations. Little has been published about this phenomenon in the tourism literature. Using a net-nographic case study from the city of Shaoxing, this research revealed the success factors for micro-film marketing by destinations. The research results showed that during the micro-film diffusion process, destination marketers were continuously and actively engaging with followers and online and offline marketing efforts were well planned and integrated. Attractions without uniqueness were impressive to viewers by being embodied in a romantic theme. Suggestions and implications for destination marketing are given. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
