    This contribution is a further continuation of a discussion, begun by Professor Mauny and continued by the present author, into the nature and provenance of the aggrey or akori beads formerly imported into the Gold Coast (i.e. the south of modern Ghana). It considers at length the evidence provided by E.J.P. Brown, a notable Fante personality of the early twentieth century, in his book, The Gold Coast and Asianti Reader (1929), and compares this with some actual bead samples and with linguistic and literary evidence not used in the earlier discussion. This evidence leads to the tentative conclusions that : 1) The original and most prized blue aggrey/akori bead was made of glass ; 2) It was identical with the Yoruba segi bead ; 3) Its import into the Gold Coast may have ceased in the mid nineteenth century ; 4) That its principal place of manufacture may have been Ife, where glass working may also have ceased in the mid nineteenth century.Cette contribution reprend un débat entamé par R. Mauny et poursuivi par l’auteur sur la nature et la provenance des perles aggrey ou akori importées autrefois en Gold Coast (sud du Ghana actuel). On analyse méthodiquement les arguments fournis par E J. P. Brown, un notable Fanti du debut du XXe siècle, dans son livre, The Gold Coast and Asianti Reader (1929) et on les confronte avec des échantillons actuels de perles et avec des preuves linguistiques et littéraires non utilisées dans les discussions antérieures. Cette argumentation permet de proposer les premières conclusions suivantes : 1) L’ancienne perle bleue aggrey/akori, qui était la plus appréciée, était faite en verre ; 2) elle était identique à la perle yoruba segi ; 3) son importation en Gold Coast semble avoir cessé à partir du milieu du XIXe siècle ; 4) son principal lieu de fabrication peut avoir été Ifé où la manufacture du verre peut aussi avoir cessé au milieu du XIXe siècle.Fage John Donnelly.     AUTOMATIC TEST ITEM GENERATION FROM KNOWLEDGE STRUCTURE

    This research designs and implements an item generation engine that can automatically create higher order thinking multiple-choice items for online tests based on knowledge maps developed by teachers. Furthermore, this study leveraged questionnaire to collect data from teachers to analyze the agreement between system and participants classification of the cognitive items generated by the algorithms designed and implemented for this study. Results indicated that there are areas where the participants agreed with the systems classification of the cognitive items and in some areas they disagree. However, the system implemented for this research might go a long way to help teachers save the time they need to spend on preparing tests and assessing their students’ understandings of the concepts they have learnt. Moreover, students will benefit from the online test system in terms of having opportunity to self-assess their knowledge at any time and getting rapid test results.2019-0

    Conflict of Interest and University Administrators

    The role of Administrators in the functioning, growth and development of any institution is of prime importance. Within the scheme of things, administrators play a critical role in the life of any University. The success of any institution therefore largely rests on the effectiveness and efficiency of Administrators. Unfortunately, little is known about how to recognise and deal with conflict of interest which is inevitable in the working life of any administrator. This phenomenon tends to make some administrators corrupt, inefficient, ineffective and unprofessional in the course of their work. This is a theoretical paper which delves into an area little known by some administrators in general and particularly, administrators in tertiary institutions in Ghana by looking at the Constitution of Ghana, 1992, and the guidelines for public officers. Moreover, the paper explains five principles outlined to help Administrators in dealing with conflict of interest. Specifically, the paper makes the point that managing conflict of interest must be the goal of all administrators in the 21st century, because of the enormous benefits it brings to the institution when there is efficient and effective management. The benefits include that, it is ethical and a good practice; promotes fairness and reduces corruption; reduces the cost of doing business; promotes good public relations; promotes transparency and ensures leadership for the public good.     Human Resource Factors and Organisational Commitment at the College of Distance Education, University of Cape Coast

    The study examined human resource factors and organisational commitment at the College of Distance Education, University of Cape Coast, Ghana. The research approach was quantitative, specifically using a descriptive study design. Out of 242 staff of the College, a sample of 148 respondents (comprising 18 senior members, 80 senior staff and 50 junior staff) were drawn across the three spectrums of staff using Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sample determination formula. The main instrument for data collection was a self- administered questionnaire. Data of the study was analysed with means, standard deviations, independent t-test, two-way analysis of variance and Spearman rank-order correlations matrix. The study found that commitment level among staff at the college (CoDE) was high and affective commitment was perceived higher than normative and continuance dimensions of organisational commitment. Work relations were perceived as higher than extrinsic rewards and training and development. It was also found that training and orientation significantly relate to organisational commitment. Sex and age of respondents did not affect organisational commitment and other variables of the study. It was recommended that management of the college should continue to pay more attention to work relations at the college by engaging staff of the college in inter-unit or interdepartmental assignments to enable staff to build more work relations and used both on-the-job and off-the-job training techniques to maintain or increase commitment level among staff of the college

    Effect of Work Conflict on Employees Job Satisfaction: The Case of College of Distance Education, University of Cape Coast

    The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of work life balance on employees’ job satisfaction at College of Distance Education, University of Cape Coast, Ghana-Africa. The study adopted the quantitative research approach specifically a correlational design. From populations of 242, a sample of 140 teaching and non teaching staff of the College was drawn across three spectrums of staff using simple random sampling technique. Instrument for data collection was questionnaire which had items measured on a scale of 1 to 4 with 1 representing strongly disagreement while 4 represented strong agreement. It was found that there was high level of conflict between work schedules and other social demands (low rating for work life balance) among staff of the College. Additionally, the level of job satisfaction among CoDE staff was low. It was also found that that there was a negative but moderate and significant relationship between work life conflict and job satisfaction among staff of CoDE. It was therefore recommended that management of CoDE should: introduce leave schedule or a day off for staff in order to have sufficient time to attend to their personal, marital and social life and rest; introduce job rotation to ensure job satisfaction and work life balance and also introduce inter-unit assignment and recreational activities for staff on public holidays

    A genetic variation map for chicken with 2.8 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms

    We describe a genetic variation map for the chicken genome containing 2.8 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). This map is based on a comparison of the sequences of three domestic chicken breeds (a broiler, a layer and a Chinese silkie) with that of their wild ancestor, red jungle fowl. Subsequent experiments indicate that at least 90% of the variant sites are true SNPs, and at least 70% are common SNPs that segregate in many domestic breeds. Mean nucleotide diversity is about five SNPs per kilobase for almost every possible comparison between red jungle fowl and domestic lines, between two different domestic lines, and within domestic lines--in contrast to the notion that domestic animals are highly inbred relative to their wild ancestors. In fact, most of the SNPs originated before domestication, and there is little evidence of selective sweeps for adaptive alleles on length scales greater than 100 kilobases
