    Models of hierarchical: galaxy formation

A semi-analytic galaxy formation model, N-body GALFORM, is developed which uses outputs from an N-body simulation to follow the merger histories of dark matter halos and treats baryonic processes using the semi-analytic model of Cole et al. We find that, apart from limited mass resolution, the only significant differences between this model and the Monte-Carlo based model of Cole et al. are due to known inaccuracies in the distribution of halo progenitor masses in the Monte-Carlo method. N-body GALFORM is used to compare Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and semi-analytic calculations of radiative cooling in the absence of star formation. We consider two cases: firstly, a simulation of a representative volume of the Universe with relatively poor mass resolution, and, secondly, a high resolution simulation of the formation of a single galaxy. We find good agreement between the models in terms of the mass of gas which cools in each halo, the masses of individual galaxies, and the spatial distribution of the galaxies. The semi-analytic model is then compared with a realistic, high-resolution galaxy simulation which includes prescriptions for star formation and feedback. A semi-analytic model without feedback is found to best reproduce the masses of the simulated galaxy and its progenitors. This model is used to populate a large volume with semi-analytic galaxies. The resulting luminosity function has an order of magnitude too many galaxies at high and low luminosities. We conclude that, while SPH and semi-analytic cooling calculations are largely consistent and therefore likely to be reasonably reliable, current numerical models of galaxy formation still contain major uncertainties due to the treatment of feedback, which will lead them to predict very different galaxy populations. Further work is required to find simulation algorithms which can simultaneously produce realistic individual galaxies and a population with reasonable statistical properties

Electromagnetic interactions in the neutron-proton system

Naisse Jacques P., Evrard M. Scaling Relation in Two Situations of Extreme Mergers

    No full text
Clusters of galaxies are known to be dynamically active systems, yet X-ray studies of the low-redshift population exhibit tight scaling laws. In this work, we extend previous studies of this apparent paradox using numerical simulations of two extreme merger cases, one is a high Mach number (above 2.5) satellite merger similar to the "bullet cluster" and the other is a merger of nearly equal-mass progenitors. Creating X-ray images densely sampled in time, we construct T X , M gas , and Y X measures within R 500 and compare to the calibrations of Kravtsov et al. We find that these extreme merger cases respect the scaling relations, for both intrinsic measures and for measures derived from appropriately masked, synthetic Chandra X-ray images. The masking procedure plays a critical role in the X-ray temperature calculation, while it is irrelevant in the X-ray gas mass derivation. Miscentering up to 100 kpc does not influence the result. The observationally determined radius R 500 might conduce to systematic shifts in M gas and Y X , which increases the total mass scatter.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/90822/1/0004-637X_729_1_45.pd

Facing the growing problem of the electric power consumption in Egyptian residential building using building performance simulation program

    No full text
Egypt has been experiencing recurrent power cuts especially at the summer, with the problem being made worse by the extra demands placed on the electrical grid by the advent of the holy month of Ramadan. Electricity shortages are now a problem in Cairo, Alexandria, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, Aswan, and Nubia, as well as in the Nile Delta governorates of Beheira and Qalioubiya. The aim of this study is to develop a model for the Egyptian residential building using Building Performance Simulation Program and make sensitivity analysis on some variables effecting the electric power consumption in order to help faceting the growing problem in Egypt. The model was created using the IES-VE 2012 (Integrated Environmental Solution ). The simulation model was verified against the survey data for the Egyptian apartment and same model simulated using energy Plus simulation tool. The results of the program describing different situations for energy using profile for the air conditions, lighting and equipments in respect to building layout and construction climate and pattern of use. This model can be used in the future to help in reducing the electric power consumption in the residential building
