    GIS technique for territorial analysis: Spatial MultiCriteria Decision Analysis

    Territorial analysis is related to the complexity of an area where human activities and environmental characteristics are the main development factors. Human activities have a direct (e.g. farm activities) and indirect (e.g. urban development/sprawl) influence on a territory and its environment, which gives an important function to such activities when strategies for territorial planning have to be defined. Several actors are involved in the assessment of a territory, which is a complicated feature of decision making to be achieved with the use of complex data-analysis process. The evolution of personal computer and specific software for the analysis of spatial data is giving important contribution to “Territorial Planning Strategies.” Spatial Decision Support System is an example of how problems occurred during a deci- sion making process can be solved using methodologies that combine “Multicriteria Approach” and “Geographic Information System.” One of these methodologies is represented by “Spatial Multicriteria Decision Analysis.

The systems adopted by the Italian forests, are based on an independent evaluation, or a certification of an external body. This study aims to define the direct and indirect costs that a logging company must address to achieve forest certi- fication.     Spatial analysis of selected biodiversity features in protected areas: a case study in Tuscany region

    The development of strategies for biodiversity analysis is critical at several levels, particularly at the national one. The World Conference on Biological Diversity held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the European Natura 2000 network and the Environmental Conference of the Regions of Europe (EN.CO.RE) brought forward several measures aiming at the preservation of Biodiversity. Targets for biodiversity preservation include protected areas among others. Accordingly, the analysis of the degree of biodiversity of protected areas proves to be a valid tool to evaluate the effectiveness of those measures. The present manuscript analyses the degree of some relevant features of biodiversity in the Region of Tuscany, through the implementation of multidimensional indicators in a Spatial MultiCriteria Analysis. After a state of the art of biodiversity definition, four indicators have been used for the analysis. A raster map in which pixels have higher or lower values of biodiversity was produced in order to investigate which of these values might be located in protected areas. Protected areas with high value of biodiversity confirmed that the adopted environmental policies are positively related to the conservation of biodiversity. The result of the analysis, corroborated through auto-correlational statistical analysis, has highlighted the important role of protected areas in maintaining a certain degree of biodiversity

    Artificial neural network for multifunctional areas

    The issues related to the appropriate planning of the territory are particularly pronounced in highly inhabited areas (urban areas), where in addition to protecting the environment, it is important to consider an anthropogenic (urban) development placed in the context of sustainable growth. This work aims at math- ematically simulating the changes in the land use, by implementing an artificial neural network (ANN) mod- el. More specifically, it will analyze how the increase of urban areas will develop and whether this development would impact on areas with particular socioeconomic and environmental value, defined as multifunctional areas. The simulation is applied to the Chianti Area, located in the province of Florence, in Italy. Chianti is an area with a unique landscape, and its territorial plan- ning requires a careful examination of the territory in which it is inserted

    Use of cellular automata in the study of variables involved in land use changes

    The study of changes in land use has been included lately in territorial processes in order to opti- mize future management decisions. The different functions that the territory plays (production, aesthetic, and natural functions, etc.) make planning choices more difficult. This work focuses on the selection and combination of a set of indicators to analyze the variables through which the changes occur in the land used in viticulture for wine production. The proposed approach makes use of the Geographic Information System (GIS) in the development of a map of land use scenario. It is applied to a case study through a model involving cellular automata (CA) implemented with maps of suitability for viticulture and Markov chains. The use in this case of the CA is aimed at validating the scenario map in order to deduce the variables and the orientations of the farmers in the field of wine production

    The aim of the study is directed to define medium-long term political strategies that focus on the qualitative and quantitative improvement of the Tuscany wood productions, at the same time guaranteeing a profitability to the forest workers, as well as revitalization of the quality woods productions.     La gomme arabique produite en Afrique (Soudan, Tchad, Sénégal, etc.) en particulier par l’Acacia senegal est une espèce spontanée exploitée grâce à ses exsudations qui sont particulièrement important du point de vue commercial et industriel (alimentation, boisson, oenologie, cosmétique, pharmaceutique, etc.). Le premier exportateur au niveau mondial est le Soudan, suivi du Tchad, tandis que les plus grands importateurs mondiaux sont représentés par l’Inde, les Etats Unis et l’Union Européenne. L’Italie connait une croissance de ses importations et exploitations de gomme arabique. Le but de cette analyse est de fournir un cadre exhaustif des potentialités du marché de la gomme arabique en Italie en particulier, et en Europe en général, dans le but de renforcer la production et exportation de la gomme arabique à partir du Tchad. L’analyse a été conduite en utilisant la méthodologie SWOT (Strength Weakeness Opportunity Threat Analysis) qui a permit de déterminer les points de forces et de faiblesse, les opportunités et les menaces relatifs à la commercialisation de la gomme arabique Tchadienne dans les marchés Italiens et Européens

    he province of Grosseto in the region of Tuscany, Italy, is among the areas in Europe included in the “Rete Natura 2000” (network Natura 2000) EU directive 92/93 CEE “Habitat”, for its peculiar site characteristics. Due to intensive human activities through territorial colonization, it is very difficult to find uncontaminated natural areas. This work analyses the area of Grosseto adopting and adapting the Recreation-Opportunity-Spectrum (ROS) North American Methodology to classify the territory based on human presence and related activity. It includes both natural protected environment and the immediate surrounding colonized milieu.     In compliance with the European Commission Reg.[EC] n°1782/03 articles 4 and 5, aiming at promoting sustainable use of agricultural land, the Tuscany Rural Development Plan [RDP] 2007-2013, includes the rehabilitation of countryside and quality of life in rural areas. The rehabilitation and preservation of retaining stone masonry walls [RSMW] for hydro-geological protection and preservation of local tradition, is one among the active implementations in response to the RDP recommendations. However, rehabilitation costs are very high and difficult to be determined. This paper aims at testing a methodology that allows generating, through Geographic Information System [GIS], a raster map geo-referencing RSMW in order to guide decision makers for a correct allocation of funds. A case study in the area of Pistoia in the region of Tuscany will allow testing the method and RSMW will be classified according to restoration cost
