Kythnos. Retracing history
The intention of the proposed project is the development of a Cultural composition- in the village of Loutra, in the island of Kythnos, Greece. The goal of this research is to introduce a melting pot that pays respect to the natural environment of Loutra, informing people of the significant history of the area and its natural environment, and most importantly introduces activities and re-instates the notion of public space.
Loutra is an excellent site for exploration. Its historic significance - Loutra has been favored since ancient and roman times due to its thermal springs, so much that it has also given the island the nickname ‘Thermia’-‘Warm’ - and unique natural attributes , attracts a significant amount of people annually ( a number that constantly rises in the recent years due to the proximity of the island to Athens and the economic crisis that drives people to closer, more affordable locations).
The most prominent building in the area is the recently listed old ‘Xenia’Hotel , that hosts the founts of the thermal springs. The hotel, although once integral part of Loutra is now in decay, leaving the area short of crucial public spaces and daily activities.
Addressing the void in culture as well as the need for conservation of tradition and heritage, this effort to connect the old and the new provides ample space for the residents and acts as a spark in order to give a new identity to the area .A museum,Library, exhibition space and workshop area create an interlace of public spaces -both internal and external- that connect the old Xenia hotel back to the building fabric through a cultural promenade, reviving the village of Loutra, introducing activities in the area and creating a prototype of developments for the island.
This project aims to integrate a currently large unused area with the surrounding built up fabric, taking advantage of a of the possibilities offered by a dry landscape with traditional built up context to use its natural potential and connect it in with modern day architecture, to create a comprehensive development that addresses the problems currently faced by the area and becomes an integral part of its daily life
The poetic lyrical, moral-like, rhythmic poem entitled "Penthos thanatu” (“Mourning for death, life wretched and return to God”) (1520) by Joustos Glykos from Koroni (Peloponnese) was a very popular reading throughout the 16th century. The poem is preserved in only one manuscript and four surviving printed Venetian versions, edited by Dimitrios Zeno). The central idea of "memento mori" (= remembering of death), hence the ephemerality of life and material goods, the human fate and the inevitable and terrible event of death, oriented to a life in accordance with the Christian commands and aiming at the salvation of the soul. The “Penthos...” is also one of the first modern Greek literary works to be printed with competent illustrations on their forefront, which shows a combination of Western European and Byzantine influences of the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. The poem is first published from the solely saved manuscript, and is accompanied by a rich selection of texts dealing with the same topi
Angiotensin II induces soluble fms-Like tyrosine kinase-1 release via calcineurin signaling pathway in pregnancy
Maternal endothelial dysfunction in preeclampsia is associated with increased soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), a circulating antagonist of vascular endothelial growth factor and placental growth factor. Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a potent vasoconstrictor that increases concomitant with sFlt-1 during pregnancy. Therefore, we speculated that Ang II may promote the expression of sFlt-1 in pregnancy. Here we report that infusion of Ang II significantly increases circulating levels of sFlt-1 in pregnant mice, thereby demonstrating that Ang II is a regulator of sFlt-1 secretion in vivo. Furthermore, Ang II stimulated sFlt-1 production in a dose- and time-dependent manner from human villous explants and cultured trophoblasts but not from endothelial cells, suggesting that trophoblasts are the primary source of sFlt-1 during pregnancy. As expected, Ang II-induced sFlt-1 secretion resulted in the inhibition of endothelial cell migration and in vitro tube formation. In vitro and in vivo studies with losartan, small interfering RNA specific for calcineurin and FK506 demonstrated that Ang II-mediated sFlt-1 release was via Ang II type 1 receptor activation and calcineurin signaling, respectively. These findings reveal a previously unrecognized regulatory role for Ang II on sFlt-1 expression in murine and human pregnancy and suggest that elevated sFlt-1 levels in preeclampsia may be caused by a dysregulation of the local renin/angiotensin system

Is there any true distinction in extreme dipping versus nondipping or dipping phenotype regarding hypertension-mediated organ damage in newly diagnosed and never-treated hypertensive patients?
Dipping phenomena is defined as nocturnal BP fall >10% during 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring (ABPM) which carries a favorable cardiovascular risk (CVR) prognosis due to reduced 24-h hypertension burden. To date, extreme dipping phenotype (defined as BP decrease ≥20%) has led to controversial prognostic results regarding CVR. We aimed to explore hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD) in extreme dippers compared to the other dipping phenotypes (nondipping, dipping). From 490 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed never-treated arterial hypertension (mean age 51 ± 11 years, 294 males) subjected to 24-h ABPM, we studied 52 extreme dippers, 52 age- and gender-matched nondippers, and 52 age- and gender-matched dippers. All patients were subjected to arterial stiffness (PWV), 24-h microalbumin levels, carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), diastolic dysfunction (E/Ea), and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) evaluation. ANOVA analysis found no differences regarding HMOD between groups. Multiple regression analysis revealed the following independent direct relationships between: (i) office SBP and PWV in nondippers (β = 0.35, p = 0.01) and extreme dippers (β = 0.49, p < 0.001), (ii) office SBP and E/Ea in extreme dippers (β = 0.39, p = 0.007), (iii) 24-h diurnal and nocturnal SBP and E/Ea in dippers (β = 0.40, p = 0.004, β = 0.39, p = 0.005, and β = 0.40, p = 0.004, respectively), and (iv) 24-h and nocturnal SBP and LVMI in nondippers (β = 0.29, p = 0.04 and β = 0.36, p = 0.009, respectively). In the early phases of untreated-arterial hypertension disease, extreme dipping phenotype in middle-aged hypertensives does not imply an adverse or favorable prognosis regarding the incidence of HMOD either as continuous variables or as abnormal HMOD compared to other dipping phenotypes. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited part of Springer Nature
BATHS IN ROMAN AND LATE ANTIQUE CHERSONISSOS: PRELIMINARY REMARKS ON THEIR TOPOGRAPHY, ARCHITECTURE AND BUILDING HISTORY
Baths count among the most frequent, but generally little studied, type-buildings of the Roman period in Crete. This study draws upon the rich evidence of bath buildings from the rescue excavations by the KG? Ephoreia of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities and the 13thEphoreia of Byzantine Antiquities over the past two decades in the area of ancient Chersonissos (modern Limenas Chersonissou) in the Pediada region. The purpose is to discuss aspects of the baths’ distribution in the urban area, their architecture, function and building history and to place them in their regional (Cretan) and supra-regional (provincial and empire-wide) context. In addition, we consider the place of baths and bathing in the Late Antique town, focusing on the evidence for architectural modifications and re-use. The evidence from Chersonissos provides an important addition to the growing number of studies on architecture in Roman Crete and a case-study of the spread and transformation of the bathing habit on the island during the Roman imperial period and Late Antiquity
Herbals and Plants in the Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer: A Systematic Review of Experimental and Clinical Studies
Background: Pancreatic cancer represents the most lethal malignancy among all digestive cancers. Despite the therapeutic advances achieved during recent years, the prognosis of this neoplasm remains disappointing. An enormous amount of experimental (mainly) and clinical research has recently emerged referring to the effectiveness of various plants administered either alone or in combination with chemotherapeutic agents. Apart from Asian countries, the use of these plants and herbals in the treatment of digestive cancer is also increasing in a number of Western countries as well. The aim of this study is to review the available literature regarding the efficacy of plants and herbals in pancreatic cancer. Methods: The authors have reviewed all the experimental and clinical studies published in Medline and Embase, up to June 2021. Results: More than 100 plants and herbals were thoroughly investigated. Favorable effects concerning the inhibition of cancer cell lines in the experimental studies and a favorable clinical outcome after combining various plants with established chemotherapeutic agents were observed. These herbals and plants exerted their activity against pancreatic cancer via a number of mechanisms. The number and severity of side‐effects are generally of a mild degree. Conclusion: A quite high number of clinical and experimental studies confirmed the beneficial effect of many plants and herbals in pancreatic cancer. More large, double‐blind clinical studies assessing these natural products, either alone or in combination with chemotherapeutic agents should be conducted. © 2022 by the authors. Reference values for aerobic capacity estimated by cardiopulmonary exercise test on a cycle ergometer in a healthy Greek population
Objective: Aerobic capacity (AC) is inversely associated with a high risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality as well as all-cause mortality. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) represents the gold standard for assessing exercise capacity based on maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max). The purpose of our study was to provide for the first time CPET-derived normative reference values in a Greek cohort of apparently healthy men and women on a cycle ergometer to evaluate their AC, and to compare our results with similar studies from other countries. Methods: A cohort of 194 apparently healthy subjects (118 males and 76 females, age range, 15-69 years) was submitted to CPET using a cycle ergometer. Mean ± SD values for several exercise parameters, VO2max included, were determined. We compared our results with existing data derived from USA and North Europe cohorts. Results: Male subjects achieved significantly higher levels of relative and absolute VO2max (p < 0.001) across all ages compared to female subjects. A decline in relative and absolute VO2max among older participants was observed in both sexes. Greek subjects had lower AC than the North Europe cohort and almost similar to the USA cohort. Conclusion: We provide the first reference data for AC in apparently healthy Greek subjects based on CPET using cycle ergometer. Our findings will allow for more accurate interpretation of CPET in several groups of healthy subjects or patients with CV diseases. The differences found between our reference values and those reported from the USA and northern European countries, underscore the need for individual countries to develop their own AC reference values. © 2019 Hellenic Society of Cardiolog
Association of abnormal coronary microcirculatory function with impaired response of longitudinal left ventricular function during adenosine stress echocardiography in untreated hypertensive patients
Aims: Coronary microcirculation is disturbed in hypertensive patients. We investigated the association of coronary flow reserve (CFR) with the response of left ventricular (LV) function as assessed by tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) during adenosine stress echocardiography in never-treated hypertensive patients. Methods and resultsWe studied 90 hypertensive patients and 30 control subjects, matched for age and sex, by adenosine stress echocardiography. We measured: (i) CFR, E and A Doppler, S′, E′, A′ mitral annulus velocities with TDI, as well as the E′/A′ ratio and the E/E′ ratio before and during adenosine infusion (ii) the changes of the measured indices between baseline and adenosine infusion. After adenosine infusion, there was an increase in S′, E′, and A′ in all patients and controls (P < 0.05). Compared with controls and patients with CFR <2.5, patients with CFR <2.5 showed a smaller increase in S′ (28.6 vs. 30.0 vs. 11.1, F for interaction 14.592) and E′ (33.3 vs. 33.3 vs.1.5, F 28.927) as well as a decrease in E′/A′ (9.2 vs. 6.4 vs.-20.0, F 5.128) and an increase in E/E′ (-6.1 vs.-1.6 vs. 30.5. F 12.780) after adenosine infusion (P < 0.05 for all comparisons). CFR was independently related to changes of TDI parameters (regression coefficient b 0.576 for S′; b 0.517 for E′; b 0.473 for E′/A′; b-0.520 for E/E′, respectively, P < 0.001). By the receiver operating curve, a CFR <2.5 predicted the median changes of all measured TDI markers, with a sensitivity and specificity over 70 (AUC >75, P < 0.05).ConclusionAn abnormal response of the LV longitudinal function during adenosine stress echocardiography is related to impaired CFR in untreated hypertensive patients.© 2012 Author
