Comparison of selenite F, Muller-Kauffmann tetrathionate and Rappaport's medium for the isolation of salmonellas from sewage-polluted natural water using a pre-enrichment technique

    No full text
Three enrichment broths, selenite F, Muller-Kauffmann tetrathionate and Rappaport, were examined for their efficiency in salmonella isolation. The three media, prepared from single ingredients in the laboratory, were compared with their commercial equivalents. Laboratory-prepared media were more efficient for isolating salmonellas from sewage-polluted natural water samples. A pre-enrichment stage using buffered peptone water was employed throughout the investigation. The size of inoculum from the pre-enrichment medium was relevant to successful salmonella isolation. Inocula studied were 1 ml and one loopful (3 mm diameter loop). The smaller inoculum gave better results with Rappaport, the larger with selenite and tetrathionate. Using the optimal inocula, Rappaport was the most efficient enrichment broth of the three fluid media in this study. © 1979, Cambridge University Pres

A greater than 200 kb deletion removing the entire beta-like globin gene cluster in a family of Irish descent.

We describe a new deletional form of gamma delta beta-thalassemia segregating in two generations of a family of Irish descent. Affected family members present with a beta-thalassemia minor phenotype, normal Hb A2 and Hb F levels. Genomic blotting analyses on DNA from affected family members show heterozygosity for a large deletion beginning at least 15 kb upstream of the 5' endpoint of the gamma delta beta-thalassemia-1 deletion, extending through the entire beta-like globin gene cluster, and continuing for at least 10 kb beyond the 3' endpoint of the deletion associated with the Spanish form of delta beta 0-thalassemia. This deletion is among the largest described so far, and removes at least 205 kb encompassing the entire beta-like globin gene cluster on chromosome 11

    No full text

Will rains and a national recovery bring rural prosperity?

    No full text
Drought and a jobless recovery battered the rural economy in 2002. The worst drought since the Dust Bowl gripped many parts of rural America, leading to forest fires, livestock liquidations, short crop supplies, and a plunge in farm incomes. After a solid start, a soft period for the national economy limited the ability of rural businesses to create new jobs. As rural stakeholders looked at their new menu of economic options, many were left wondering if rains and a stronger national recovery would be enough to lead rural America back to prosperity. ; Henderson and Novack examine the rural outlook in the face of drought and a weak national recovery. They analyze the current state of the farm economy, focusing on the drought and its impacts on the farm sector. Next, they explore the jobless recovery on the Main Streets and industrial parks of rural communities. They conclude that the return of rain and stronger national economic growth should improve the prospects for rural areas in 2003. To prosper in the long run, however, many rural places must create new opportunities forged on a renewed commitment to entrepreneurship and innovation.Droughts ; Rural areas

KOI 1224: A Fourth Bloated Hot White Dwarf Companion Found with Kepler

    No full text
We present an analysis and interpretation of the Kepler binary system KOI 1224. This is the fourth binary found with Kepler that consists of a thermally bloated, hot white dwarf in a close orbit with a more or less normal star of spectral class A or F. As we show, KOI 1224 contains a white dwarf with T eff = 14, 700 ±\pm 1000 K, mass = 0.22 ±\pm 0.02 M &sun;, and radius = 0.103 ±\pm 0.002 R &sun;, and an F-star companion of mass 1.59 ±\pm 0.06 M &sun; that is somewhat beyond its terminal-age main sequence. The orbital period is quite short at 2.69802 days. The ingredients that are used in the analysis are the Kepler binary light curve, including the detection of the Doppler boosting effect; the NUV and FUV fluxes from the GALEX images of this object; an estimate of the spectral type of the F-star companion; and evolutionary models of the companion designed to match its effective temperature and mean density. The light curve is modeled with a new code named Icarus which we describe in detail. Its features include the full treatment of orbital phase-resolved spectroscopy, Doppler boosting, irradiation effects, and transits/eclipses, which are particularly suited to irradiated eclipsing binaries. We interpret the KOI 1224 system in terms of its likely evolutionary history. We infer that this type of system, containing a bloated hot white dwarf, is the direct descendant of an Algol-type binary. In spite of this basic understanding of the origin of KOI 1224, we discuss a number of problems associated with producing a system with an orbital period this short

Detection of salmonella in composted wastewater sludge: a report on a research project carried out for the Water Authority of Western Australia

    No full text
It is likely that Australian sludge management guidelines will require monitoring of composted wastewater sludge for the presence of salmonellae. However, methods to perform this monitoring are not well established and it appears that methods used in the past may severely underestimate Salmonella numbers. The aim of this project was to evaluate methods for detecting Salmonella in composted sludge

Moving to high quality of life

The U.S. population has been migrating to places with high perceived quality of life. A calibrated general-equilibrium model shows that such migration follows from broad-based technological progress. Rising national wages increase demand for consumption amenities. Under a baseline parameterization, a place with amenities for which individuals would pay 5 percent of their income grows 0.3 percent faster than an otherwise identical place. Productivity is shown to be a decreasingly important determinant of local population. The faster growth of high-amenity places is considerably strengthened if they have low initial equilibrium population density underpinned by low relative productivity. Places with identical amenities asymptotically converge to an identical population density, regardless of their relative productivity levels. An implication is that the high growth rates of high-amenity localities should eventually taper off.>Consumption (Economics) ; Quality of life

    Consumption amenities and city crowdedness

    No full text
Crowdedness varies widely among U.S. cities. A simple, static general equilibrium model suggests that plausible differences in metro areas’ consumption amenities can account for much of the observed variation. Under a baseline calibration, differences in amenities valued at 30 percent of average consumption expenditures suffice to support a twenty-fold difference in population density. Empirical results confirm that amenities help support crowdedness and suggest that they are becoming a more important determinant of where people choose to live. But for the moment, local productivity appears to be the more important cause of local crowdedness.Productivity ; Consumption (Economics)
