A non-monotonic approach to semantic matchmaking and request refinement in e-marketplaces

    No full text
We present and motivate a formal approach and algorithms for semantic matchmaking in an e-commerce framework. The proposed solution exploits nonmonotonic inferences to compute semantic-based ranking of offers and provides explanation services in the query-retrieval-refinement loo

UBI-CARE: ubiquitous learning per medici e pazienti

    No full text

    Semantic-enhanced EPCglobal Radio-Frequency IDentification

    No full text
We propose to enhance EPCglobal RFIDs enriching them with semantic capabilities. Memory organization of tags and the data exchange protocol are exploited and extended to the purpose. By design, the proposed enhancements do not alter the basic behavior of protocol and tag memory organization and are thus fully backward compatible. In order to store annotated descriptions a compression algorithm for DIG descriptions has also been devised. We report here results in comparison with other XML-based compression tools and simulations for enhanced tags reading and decompression

Feature Integration and Relevance Feedback Analysis in Image Similarity Evaluation

    No full text
In this article we describe the results of a study on similarity evaluation in image retrieval using color, object orientation, and relative position as content features, in a framework oriented to image repositories where the semantics of stored images are limited to a specific domain. The focus is not on a complete description of image content, which is supposed to be known to some extent, but on the extraction of simple and immediate features that can assure, through their combination, automated image analysis and efficient retrieval. Relevance feedback is introduced as an effective way to improve retrieval accuracy. A simple prototype system is also introduced that competes feature descriptors and allows users to enter queries, browse the retrieved images, and refine the results through relevance feedback analysis

Learning algorithm for pattern classification using cellular neural networks

    No full text
A new learning algorithm for pattern classification using cellular neural networks is described. The authors show that patterns belonging to the training set as well as patterns outside it can be classified reliably using the proposed algorithm. Comparisons with well established classification techniques clearly highlight the performances of the approach developed herein

Query by sketch and relevance feedback for content-based image retrieval over the web

    No full text
Content-based image retrieval systems are being actively investigated owing to their ability to retrieve images based on the actual visual content rather than by manually associated textual descriptions. This paper considers the issues related to the porting of such systems to the World Wide Web and proposes some ways to solve them. To substantiate our ideas, we propose a web-based image retrieval system that allows the user to express a query as a simple sketch portraying 'what' she/he is looking for. The system relies on a three-layer relevance feedback architecture to progressively refine retrieval results according to the user's preferences. We also emphasize the use of the vector space model for features representation and the cosine distance for similarity ranking. Performances are presented using both well-assessed information retrieval measures and subjective evaluation criteria

A new learning algorithm for pattern classification using cellular neural networks

    No full text
In this paper a new learning algorithm for pattern classification using cellular neural networks is described. In particular, it is shown that patterns belonging to the training set as well as patterns outside it can be reliably classified using the proposed algorithm. Finally, comparisons with well-established classification techniques are carried out, with the aim to highlight the performances of the approach developed herei

Il borgo abbandonato di Craco (MT). Problemi di conservazione e prospettive di valorizzazione

    No full text
The study of the abandoned village of Craco (MT), starting with the most representative buildings, is the first step of a research itinerary aimed at developing a project for the conservation and revitalized of the urban organism which, while respecting the character of the places, cannot fail to take into account the critical geological condition and the problem of safety. Partially collapsed buildings facilitate study anatomical of the masonry sections and materials, favoring the constructive understanding of the architectural organisms that are in danger of disappearing slowly but inexorably. Only the intimate knowledge of the buildings in their constructive anatomy, the awareness of their real state of conservation, the identification of their functional vocations, can orient (through safeguard measures, indications, prescriptions, constraints) the restoration project based, hopefully, on the criteria of minimum intervention, compatibility, recognizability
