To the people of Texas : after a night of war, confusion and bloodshed ...

    No full text
Broadside letter written by D. J. Baldwin in 1865 about the duties of the citizens of Texas to move forward in the aftermath of the Civil War. Below is the text of a second letter entitled ''Common Sense,'' written in September 1863 and enumerates the ways in which the Confederacy and Texas were suffering because of Civil War, ending with an exhortation to vote for candidates who would bring peace.Notes from catalog record. The three men accused of promulgating the 1863 broadside, ''Common Sense'' were D.J. Baldwin, E. Seelinger, and Dr. Richard Rogers Peebles. They signed the piece as ''Vicksburg.'

    Soneira-Peebles Model

    No full text
The Soneira-Peebles model (Soneira & Peebles 1978) is applied to study the clustering distribution. Started from level L = 0, eta is the number of points within each circle at each level, the radius at each level is R / lambda ^ L and total points are eta ^ L. The fractal dimension D = log(eta)/log(lambda). The corresponding slope in 2D two-point correlation function is D – 2. R. M. Soneira and P. J. E. summary:Královská švédská akademie věd udělila Nobelovu cenu za fyziku roku 2019 třem vědcům, kteří významně přispěli ke studiu vesmíru.

    Multiple Processes in Graph-based Reasoning

    No full text
Current models of graph understanding typically address the encoding and interpretive processes involved during the course and largely focus on the visual properties of the graph. An experiment comparing reasoning with two types of graph is presented. On the basis and scope of existing models, performance with the two graphs would not be predicted to differ substantially. There are substantial computational differences between the graphs, however. It is suggested, therefore, that an adequate model of graph use must incorporate different combinations of visual properties of the graphs. levels of graph complexity, interpretive schemas and task requirements

Chirped-pulse Fourier-transform Microwave Spectroscopy Of The Prototypical C-h…π Interaction: The Benzene…acetylene Weakly Bound Dimer

    No full text
The rotational spectrum of the CHπ\cdots\pi bonded complex between benzene and acetylene has been measured in the 6206-20 GHz range using chirped-pulse Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy. The spectra for the normal isotopologue, three unique 13^{13}C substituted species, and the d1d_1-benzene\cdotsHCCH species have allowed determination of the dimer structure. The spectrum is that of a symmetric top, with effective C6vC_{6v} symmetry, and a CHπ\cdots\pi distance of 2.4921(1)2.4921(1) \AA. The dipole moment has been measured using the Stark effect, and is 0.438(11)0.438(11) D. In addition to the ground state spectrum, three additional sets of transitions corresponding to similar rotational constants have been observed, likely due to excitation of the three low energy intermolecular vibrational modes of the dimer. Analysis of these excited state transitions is in progress. Comparison of the binding energy and structure of the benzene\cdotsHCCH dimer with other Hπ\cdots\pi complexes will be presented.Made available in DSpace on 2014-09-17T16:56:11Z (GMT). Adenosine produces changes in cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism as assessed by near-infrared spectroscopy in late-gestation fetal sheep in utero

    No full text
Rises in fetal adenosine during hypoxia may have a metabolic inhibitory role that helps the fetus adapt to periods of low arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2). We examined the fetal cerebral hemodynamic and metabolic responses to exogenous adenosine infusion and compared this with previous studies. Six fetal sheep at ca. 125 d gestation were instrumented under general anesthesia with catheters, flow probes, and near-infrared optodes and allowed to recover. After 3 d, adenosine was infused at a level known to reproduce fetal levels during hypoxia. Fetal hemodynamics and cerebral near-infrared spectroscopic (NIRS) variables were monitored and paired blood samples taken for oxygen delivery and consumption calculation. Fetal heart rate, mean arterial pressure, and carotid flow showed no change during adenosine infusion. Cerebral oxyhemoglobin (HbO2), deoxyhemoglobin (Hb), and blood volume rose, suggesting venous pooling in the brain. Cerebral cytochrome oxidase (CcO) became more oxidized, indicating reduction in electron flow down the mitochondrial electron transfer chain and, thus, a fall in metabolic rate. Blood sample analysis revealed that there was no change in oxygen delivery to the head but that cerebral oxygen consumption fell during adenosine infusion. These data indicate that fetal cerebral metabolism fell during infusion of adenosine at a level known to reproduce fetal plasma concentrations during hypoxia
