Moist Rayleigh-Benard Convection
We report the observations from turbulent thermal Rayleigh-Benard convection experiment with a two-phase liquid-vapor binary mixture. Evaporation/condensation processes in a turbulent convection are accompanied by the formation of cloud like structures above the liquid-vapor interface. We also found that a liquid film condensation on the underside of the top plate results in regular hexagonal patterns of falling droplets

Thermal boundary layer equation for turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection
We report a new thermal boundary layer equation for turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection for Prandtl number P>1that takes into account the effect of turbulent fluctuations. These fluctuations are neglected in existing equations, which are based on steady-state and laminar assumptions. Using this new equation, we derive analytically the mean temperature profiles in two limits: Pr~1 and Pr>>1. These two theoretical predictions are in excellent agreement with the results of our direct numerical simulations for Pr=4.38 and Pr=2547.9, respectively
Monte Carlo Simulation Of Thermal Fluctuations Below The Onset Of Rayleigh-Benard Convection
The density fluctuations below the onset of convection in the Rayleigh-Benard problem are studied with the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. The particle simulation results clearly show the connection between the static correlation functions of fluctuations below the critical Rayleigh number and the flow patterns above the onset of convection for small Knudsen number flows (Kn=0.01 and Kn=0.005). Furthermore, the physical nature for no convection in the Rayleigh-Benard problem under large Knudsen number conditions (Kn>0.028) is explained based on the dynamics of fluctuations
Thermovibrational Instability Of Rayleigh-Marangoni-Benard Convection In Two-Layer Fluid Systems
The thermovibrational instability of Rayleigh-Marangoni-Benard convection in a two-layer system under the high-frequency vibration has been investigated by linear instability analysis in the present paper. General equations for the description of the convective flow and within this framework, the generalized Boussinesq approximation are formulated. These equations are dealt with using the averaging method. The theoretical analysis results show that the high-frequency thermovibrations can change the Marangoni-Benard convection instabilities as well as the oscillatory gaps of the Rayleigh-Marangoni-Benard convection in two-layer liquid systems. It is found that vertical high-frequency vibrations can delay convective instability of this system, and damp the convective flow down. (C) 2007 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Instability of Two-Layer Rayleigh-Benard Convection with Interfacial Thermocapillary Effect
The linear instability analysis of the Rayleigh-Allarangoni-Benard convection in a two-layer system of silicon oil 10cS and fluorinert FC70 liquids are performed in a larger range of two-layer depth ratios H, from 0.2 to 5.0 for different total depth H less than or equal to 12 mm. Our results are different from the previous study on the Rayleigh-Benard instability and show strong effects of thermocapillary force at the interface on the time-dependent oscillations arising from the onset of instability convection
