Intérieur du cirque Gleich
Certains des plus grands cirques voyageurs d’Europe ont tourné autour de Paris à diverses époques du XX e siècle. Sur cette photographie, le cirque allemand Gleich de Julius Gleich et Karola Häni-Gleich, monté à l’américaine (quatre mâts en ligne et une armature de corniches très inclinées pour soutenir la toile) livre l’architecture en nervures de l’intérieur, vide, de son chapiteau-hippodrome. La troupe, l’administration, le chapiteau, la ménagerie, les roulottes et le reste du matériel, acheminés par deux trains, s’installent à Sèvres en juillet 1929. Fondé par l’Autrichien Julius Gleich (1886-1951) en 1928, ce cirque, avec ses trois pistes, sa ménagerie de plus de 200 animaux sans compter sa cavalerie de 115 chevaux, et ses 10 000 places assises figure parmi les plus grands d’Europe… jusqu’à une première faillite en 1935 et son arrêt définitif en 1937

Sur cette photographie, le chapiteau de plus de 60 mètres de long, monté à l’américaine, en quatre mâts en ligne, du cirque allemand de Julius Gleich et Karola Häni-Gleich, occupe une grande partie du Cours de Vincennes en 1933. Temporal modulation transfer functions in the European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris): II. Responses of auditory-nerve fibres
The temporal resolution of cochlear-nerve fibres in the European starling was determined with sinusoidally amplitude-modulated noise stimuli similar to those previously used in a psychoacoustic study in this species (Klump and Okanoya, 1991). Temporal modulation transfer curves (TMTFs) were constructed for cochlear afferents allowing a direct comparison with the starling's behavioural performance. On average, the neuron's detection of modulation was less sensitive than that obtained in the behavioural experiments, although the most sensitive cells approached the values determined psychophysically. The shapes of the neural TMTFs generally resembled low-pass or band-pass filter functions, and the shapes of the averaged neural functions were very similar to those obtained in the behavioural study for two different types of stimuli (gated and continuous carrier). Minimum integration times calculated from the upper cut-off frequency of the neural TMTFs had a median of 0.97 ms with a range of 0.25 to 15.9 ms. The relations between the minimum integration times and the tuning characteristics of the cells (tuning curve bandwidth, Q10 dB-value, high- and low-frequency slopes of the tuning curves) are discussed. Finally, we compare the TMTF data recorded in the starling auditory nerve with data from neurophysiological and behavioural observations on temporal resolution using other experimental paradigms in this and other vertebrate species

CO adsorption and oxidation on bimetallic Pt/Ru(0001) surfaces – a combined STM and TPD/TPR study
The results of a comparative STM and TPD/TPR study on the adsorption and oxidation of CO on pure Ru(0001) and on structurally and compositionally well-defined, bimetallic Pt/Ru(0001) surfaces are presented. The defect structure and local surface composition of the bimetallic substrates, which are produced by epitaxial growth of monolayer Pt islands or by Pt deposition and subsequent surface alloying, are characterized by high-resolution STM images with chemical contrast. TPD and TPR experiments for CO adsorption/oxidation on these surfaces show a distinct lowering of the CO adsorption energy on the bimetallic surfaces with respect to the pure Ru(0001) and Pt(lll) surfaces, with the onset of CO desorption already at 230 K. The reduction in adsorption energy is attributed to an electronic modification of the deposit metal due to interaction with the Ru(0001) substrate. The bimetallic surface alloy catalyzes CO oxidation under UHV conditions. The reduced temperature for CO2 desorption as compared to Pt(lll) indicates an even lower barrier than on the latter surface, whereas the pure Ru(0001) surface is inert under these conditions. The results are discussed with respect to the superior CO tolerance of bimetallic PtRu catalysts in low-temperature fuel cells as compared to monometallic Pt catalysts, leading to a mechanistic explanation of that phenomenon distinctly different from previous ideas. The role of eosinophil major basic protein in angiogenesis
BACKGROUND: Eosinophil-derived major basic protein (MBP) plays an active role in allergic inflammation and tissue remodelling. However, its role in angiogenesis has not been established as yet. Therefore our objective was to investigate whether MBP exhibits any direct pro-angiogenic effects. METHODS: Rat aortic endothelial cells and human umbilical vascular endothelial cells were cultured with different concentrations of MBP and their viability (Trypan blue exclusion test), proliferation (thymidine incorporation) and capillary-like structure formation (matrigel assay) were investigated in vitro. The angiogenic activity of MBP was then tested in vivo using the chick chorio allantoic membrane (CAM) assay. RESULTS: Subcytotoxic concentrations of MBP induce endothelial cell proliferation and enhance the pro-mitogenic effect of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), but do not affect their VEGF release. MBP promotes capillarogenesis by endothelial cells seeded on matrigel and sprouting formation in the CAM assay. Furthermore, we have shown that the pro-angiogenic effect of MBP is not due to its cationic charge since stimulation of the CAMs with the synthetic polycation, poly-L-arginine does not induce any angiogenic effects. CONCLUSIONS: These data demonstrate that MBP has pro-angiogenic effects in vitro and in vivo, providing a novel mechanism whereby MBP can participate in tissue inflammation and remodelling in atopic diseases
