David Walker and other Dead Prophets
No full textWhat do David Walker, Jesus, Kahina of the Mahgreb, Dona Beatrice of Kongo, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X have in common? They were Africans of change. They were Africans not afraid of criticism. They were Africans who stood up to their present day challenges. They were Africans who confronted Europeans and their morals, their Christianity, and their imposed sense of superiority. These leaders, prophets, revoiutionaries had faith in a God, a supreme being, that was unshakeable. They constantly questioned the morality and the professed Christianity of the Europeans. This group of prophets put to the test the 'ultimate religion' and dared to call it a farce; dared to call its followers hypocrites. The prophets called into question the Europeans' societal values and their imposed sense of superiority by continuing to question from whence came all of this power? They dared to threaten the Europeans with physical and spiritual violence. It is because of these stances of confrontation and because of their fight for freedom and justice that these prophets were repaid with injustice. In this paper I will give instances of all these positions and draw the parallel of the lives of these prophets. I contend that these people were killed because the Europeans or mainstream society felt threatened. It is no coincidence that the strongest and most outspoken leaders of our race are those who are not afraid to die, because they knew that death was the ultimate price for freedom. It is no coincidence that other accommodating leaders never lived the life of constant uncertainty that the prophets lived. If freedom meant accommodation, the prophets preferred death
The Role of Institutions in the Post-Walrasian Economics of David Colander and Complexity Economics
No full textGłównym celem artykułu jest (1) przedstawienie podstawowych założeń ekonomii postwalrasowskiej, nurtu teoretycznego zapoczątkowanego w latach dziewięćdziesiątych XX w. przez amerykańskiego historyka myśli ekonomicznej Davida Colandera. Podważa on fundamentalne twierdzenia XX-wiecznej ekonomii, które czerpią z koncepcji naukowych Leona Walrasa, zwłaszcza w zakresie teorii ogólnej równowagi ekonomicznej. Jednym z kluczowych elementów programu ekonomii postwalrasowskiej jest uwzględnienie instytucji jako pozacenowego mechanizmu koordynacji procesów gospodarczych. Pozostałymi celami niniejszego tekstu są: (2) wskazanie sposobu, w jaki elementy heterodoksyjnych szkół ekonomii włącza się do głównego nurtu w ramach nowego zjawiska, jakim jest tzw. ekonomia złożoności (complexity economics), oraz (3) przedstawienie propozycji koniecznych zmian w zakresie metodologii ekonomii. W ramach zakończenia przedstawione zostaną (4) rozważania na temat implikacji koncepcji teoretycznych Colandera i innych przedstawicieli nowego nurtu ekonomii dla polityki gospodarczej.The main aim of the article is to present the basic elements of post-Walrasian economics, an economic school initiated in the 1990s by David Colander, American historian of economic thought. Colander questions the fundaments of mainstream economics, based inter alia on Leon Walras s theory of general equilibrium. One of the key elements of the post-Walrasian economics is the acknowledgement of institutions as non-price coordination mechanism in the economy. The article discusses how elements of heterodox economic schools are introduced into the mainstream economics within the new complexity economics, and suggests essential amendments to the methodology of economics. As a conclusion, the author presents the implication of the economic thought of David Colander and other representatives of complexity economics for the economic policy
