Cortical neuronal loss and hippocampal sclerosis are not detected by voxel-based morphometry in individual epilepsy surgery patients
Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) has detected differences between brains of groups of patients
with epilepsy and controls, but the sensitivity for detecting subtle pathological changes in single subjects
has not been established. The aim of the study was to test the sensitivity of VBM using statistical parametric
mapping (SPM5) to detect hippocampal sclerosis (HS) and cortical neuronal loss in individual patients.
T1-weighted volumetric 1.5 T MR images from 13 patients with HS and laminar cortical neuronal loss
were segmented, normalised and smoothed using SPM5. Both modulated and non-modulated analyses
were performed. Comparisons of one control subject against the rest (n ¼ 23) were first performed to ascertain
the smoothing level with the lowest number of SPM changes in controls. Each patient was then compared
against the whole control group. The lowest number of SPM changes in control subjects was found
at a smoothing level of 10 mm full width half maximum for modulated and non-modulated data. In the
patient group, no SPM abnormalities were found in the affected temporal lobe or hippocampus at this
smoothing level. At lower smoothing levels there were numerous SPM findings in controls and patients.
VBM did not detect any abnormalities associated with either laminar cortical neuronal loss or HS. This
may be due to normalisation and smoothing of images and low statistical power in areas with larger interindividual
differences. This suggests that the methodology may currently not be suitable to detect particular
occult abnormalities possibly associated with seizure onset zone in individual epilepsy patients with
unremarkable standard structural MRI
Comparison of Javascript ES6 and its React JS library from the point of view of a beginning developer
This bachelor thesis deals with the issue of Vanilla JavaScript and its React JS library from the perspective of a beginning developer. The aim of the work is to map in detail, practically demonstrate and then compare the basic principles of selected tools Vanilla JavaScript and React JS. The work consists of three imaginary parts. After defining important terms, the author deals in the first part with the Vanilla JavaScript approach. The given part of the procedure presents important principles of pure JavaScript with the end of the part, which is an example of practical development in this tool. The second part of the work deals with the React JS library in the same way. The given part of the work goes again from the description of theoretical principles to a practical demonstration of the development of a functionally identical application, but this time from the point of view of the React JS tool. In the third and final part of the work, the author theoretically compares the key differences, advantages and disadvantages of the principles in the development of the application in Vanilla JavaScript and the React JS library. This part is then concluded with a final summary of the comparison with a detailed description of the advantages and disadvantages of each approach with a framework recommendation for the use of the solutions in various development situations. After reading the work, the reader should get a comprehensive idea of the possibilities of using the tools in solving specific problems, in such a way that they can choose the right tool in practice to solve the problem.Táto bakalárska práca sa zaoberá problematikou Vanilla JavaScriptu a jeho knižnice React JS z pohľadu začínajúceho vývojára. Assessing the vulnerability of the rice-wheat production system in the north-west Indo-Gangetic Plains to climatic drivers
This thesis explores the spatial patterns in the vulnerability of the rice-wheat production systems of Punjab and Haryana to climate. Remote sensing monitoring is used to identify rice and wheat crop extents and to capture dynamics of the cropping system such as length of growing periods and cropland productivity. This remote sensing monitoring is integrated with analysis of climate datasets and other measures of the agricultural system to 1) identify the exposure of rice-wheat croplands to harmful climate drivers, 2) capture the sensitivity of the rice-wheat croplands to climate and to 3) inform targeted adaptations to improve climate resilience, ensure environmental sustainability and sufficient levels of production, the pillars of a climate-smart landscape.Across all India, including Punjab and Haryana, there was a fragmented spatial pattern in the occurrence, and sign, in trends of monsoon precipitation. This highlights the need for locally sensitive water resources management. Over 5 million ha of rice-wheat croplands in Punjab and Haryana were exposed to unfavourable trends in facets of monsoon precipitation; this was mainly exposure to increasing recurrence of drought years and increasing inter-annual variability in monsoon precipitation. However, crop yield-climate regression models indicated that precipitation is not influencing variability in rice or wheat crop production but growing season temperatures are. Average minimum and maximum temperature during the thermo-sensitive periods of crop development have a greater negative impact on wheat crop yield than exceedance of critical temperatures. The negative impact of warming on wheat crop production increased with later start-of-season dates. Through an integrated use of remote sensing datasets the spatial patterns in the magnitude and varying nature of the vulnerability of crop production to climate were captured. This enabled identification of location-specific stresses, such as later sowing dates, and targeting locally optimum adaptations
3D pgRouting and visualization in Cesium JS using the integrated model of LADM and IndoorGML
A web-based application has been developed, exploiting the integrated model of LADM andIndoorGML to provide indoor navigation based on the user's access rights in an educationalbuilding. Different types of users (students, teachers, visitors, etc.) have different access rights, which also depend on the exact time (e.g. inside or outside office hours). A 3D BIM IFC fileof a building has been geo-referenced and converted into a LADM complaint database inPostgreSQL/PostGIS and is enriched with information about access rights based on therelationship between users, time and indoor spaces. The PostgreSQL extension pgRouting hasbeen used for the actual routing. To support the access rights-based routing, the databasecontains several tables to represent nodes, edges, parties (users), and rights. There is one overallnetwork for the whole building, and database views are used to dynamically select the relevantnodes and edges based on the time and the user’s rights. The Dijkstra algorithm is used tocompute the shortest path. Finally, the 3D geospatial web-platform Cesium JS is used to createa client GUI allowing to specify start and destination, the user and time, and to visualize thenavigation routes. As this GUI is web-based it can run on different platforms, such as desktops, laptops, tablets and mobile phones. This paper provides a complete description of all the stepsto design, develop and test the integrated model of LADM and IndoorGML.GIS Technologi
Haemodynamic correlates of interictal and ictal epileptic discharges and ictal semiology using simultaneous scalp video-EEG-fMRI and intracranial EEG-fMRI
Interictal and ictal epileptic discharges are produced by focal and widespread dysfunctional neuronal networks. Identification and characterization of epileptic discharges underlie the diagnosis and the choice of treatment for epilepsy patients. A better knowledge of the generation, propagation and localisation of epileptic discharges, and their interaction with the physiological and pathological brain networks can be very helpful in planning epilepsy surgery and minimizing the risk of damaging the physiological brain networks. This work describes a number of methodological developments and novel applications investigating the epileptic networks in humans using EEG-fMRI. First, I implemented synchronized video recording inside the MRI-scanner during simultaneous EEG-fMRI studies, which did not deteriorate the imaging and EEG data quality. Secondly, I used video recordings to identify physiological activities to be modelled as confounds in the functional imaging data analysis for interictal activity, thus increasing the sensitivity of video-EEG-fMRI. Thirdly, I applied this modelling approach to investigate seizure related functional networks in patients with focal epilepsy. Video recordings allowed partitioning seizures into phases separating the ictal onset related functional networks from propagation related networks. Localisation of the ictal onset related networks may be useful in the planning for epilepsy surgery in a selected group of patients, as demonstrated by their comparison with intracranial-EEG recordings. Further, I investigated haemodynamic changes during preictal period which suggested recruitment of an inhibitory followed by an excitatory network prior to the ictal onset on scalp EEG. In the next step, I used simultaneous intracranial-EEG-fMRI in patients undergoing invasive evaluation, demonstrating that local and remote networks associated with very focal interictal discharges recorded on intracranial-EEG may predict the surgical outcome. Finally, I investigated the interaction of epileptic discharges with the working memory, using scalp video-EEG-fMRI, showing that the presence of epileptic activity may alter the working memory related networks. Methodological constraints, clinical applications and future perspectives are discussed
Meir-Keeler Type Contractions on Js-Metric Spaces and Related Fixed Point Theorems
KARAPINAR, ERDAL/0000-0002-6798-3254We introduce two classes of Meir-Keeler type contractions in the framework of JS-metric spaces introduced by Jleli and Samet (2015). For each class, a fixed point result is derived. Some interesting consequences which follow from our obtained results are discussed.King Saud University (Saudi Arabia)The second author extends his appreciation to Distinguished Scientist Fellowship Program (DSFP) at King Saud University (Saudi Arabia)
Eddy-Induced Growth Rate of Low-Frequency Variability and Its Mid- to Late Winter Suppression in the Northern Hemisphere
Synoptic eddy and low-frequency flow (SELF) feedback plays an important role in reinforcing low-frequency variability (LFV). Recent studies showed that an eddy-induced growth (EIG) or instability makes a fundamental contribution to the maintenance of LFV. To quantify the efficiency of the SELF feedback, this study examines the spatiotemporal features of the empirical diagnostics of EIG and its associations with LFV. The results show that, in terms of eddy vorticity forcing, the EIG rate of LFV is generally larger (smaller) in the upper (lower) troposphere, whereas, in terms of eddy potential vorticity forcing, it is larger in the lower troposphere to partly balance the damping effect of surface friction. The local EIG rate shows a horizontal spatial distribution that corresponds to storm-track activity, which tends to be responsible for maintaining LFV amplitudes and patterns as well as sustaining eddy-driven jets. In fact, the EIG rate has a well-defined seasonality, being generally larger in cold seasons and smaller in the warmest season, and this seasonality is stronger in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere. This study also reveals a mid-to late winter (January-March) suppression of the EIG rate in the Northern Hemisphere, which indicates a reduced eddy feedback efficiency and may be largely attributed to the eddy kinetic energy suppression and the midlatitude zonal wind maximum in the midwinter of the Northern Hemisphere.O (subject to Restrictions below, author can archive publisher's version/PDF)1144sciescopu
