This collection embraces over a thousand different genres of folklore tales, carefully transcribed with attention given to the authentic properties of narrations, which makes this publication a rich and valuable source material
Identification and functional characterisation of an allene oxide synthase from grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. Sauvignon blanc)
No full textJasmonic acid (JA) is known to be an important phytohormone that orchestrates plant defence mechanisms against a range of herbivores and pathogens. Studies have suggested allene oxide synthase (AOS; E.C 4.2.1.92), the first committed step in JA biosynthesis, is essential for JA biosynthesis, yet clear evidence of its role as a biosynthetic regulatory point is lacking, in the main due to conflicting results derived from transgenic studies. However other studies lend support to a biosynthetic regulatory role for AOS. These studies have suggested that certain amino acid substitutions can increase the biosynthetic capacity of the enzyme and consequently improve pathogen tolerance in plants. To explore the role of AOS in Grapevine we isolated and functionally characterised this enzyme for the first time from Vitis vinifera L. Sauvignon blanc. The cloned AOS consisted of a single 1563 bp open reading frame. Comparative sequence analysis showed that the cloned gene (VvAOS) was highly conserved compared to those from other species. Complementation of an Arabidopsis AOS null mutant (aos) with VvAOS recovered the male sterile mutant phenotype and confirmed its function. Transcript analysis showed that VvAOS was wound responsive in leaves and was detectable in most tissues, with the highest levels of transcript in the mesocarp (pulp) of mature berries. Sub-cellular localisation of the VvAOS protein indicated that VvAOS is associated with the chloroplast membrane. Unexpectedly high levels of VvAOS transcript in complemented aos lines did not lead to predicted increases in JA. We have functionally characterised the sole AOS from Grapevine. Patterns of transcript accumulation in grapevine suggest roles in growth, development as well as an important role for JA in fruit ripening. Expression of VvAOS in Arabidopsis suggest complex epigenetic interactions between transgenic and endogenous AOS alleles, providing a possible explanation for why transgenic studies of AOS have delivered conflicting data pointing to a questionable role of AOS as a key regulatory point in JA biosynthesis
The Story of a Community. A Case Study Based on the Selected Genres of Folk Prose
No full textOne way to analyse the functioning of a community is to study the stories generated by it. Incomprehensible phenomena and events, wars, disasters and other threats that affect a community result in the creation of informative texts that mythologise people and facts. Such texts are aimed at giving sense to the occurring events and restoring the community’s sense of security. Confronted with events of considerable importance, many different groups feel the need to express their opinions, share fears and expectations, as each crisis forces the community to express ideas about the reality and about the community itself in the form of stories. This article analyses texts of different character: integrating, informative, compensatory or cautionary, gathered by the author during her field research in Zagłębie Dąbrowskie (Eng. Dąbrowa Basin) between 1999 and 2004.Jednym ze sposobów analizy funkcjonowania wspólnoty jest badanie generowanych przez nią opowieści. Niezrozumiałe zjawiska i zdarzenia, wojny, katastrofy i inne niebezpieczeństwa, które dotykają społeczność, powołują do życia teksty informujące, mitologizujące osoby i fakty, mające na celu usensownienie wydarzeń oraz przywrócenie poczucia bezpieczeństwa. Wydarzenia znacznej rangi powodują, że wiele różnych grup odczuwa potrzebę wygłoszenia opinii, obaw, oczekiwań, jak każdy kryzys zmusza społeczność do wyrażenia wyobrażeń o rzeczywistości i sobie w formie opowieści. W artykule analizie poddane zostaną teksty: integrujące, informujące, kompensujące, ostrzegające, zapisane przez autorkę podczas badań terenowych w Zagłębiu Dąbrowskim w latach 1999-2004

No full textThe reviewed book of Dr. Elżbieta Szot-Radziszewska, Ph.D. entitled The Picture of a Village in the Imagination of its Residents. Places and People published by the Kielce University of Technology in 2013 is a summary of long-term researches conducted in 2008–2013 on residents of Kielce province. During the interviews the discussion was focused on places that were and still are important for the interviewed as well as events, stories and rituals connected with these places. The respondents talked about their village they knew from the times of their childhood and stories transferred from elderly residents, their religious, socio-economical and cultural life as well as transformations that happened in the 20th century. The subject of the study were imaginations – mental images – understood as a social fact, an important component of the cognitive process and the sensual contact with an object or place that occurs as a result of perception and valoralization of the environment. During the ethnographic field researches as well as during the analysis of the gathered material the author of the research used the method of a cognitive map. Furthermore, the study aimed at analysis of anthropological mental maps that were created on the basis of the part of the collected materials, description of places and objects, significant attitudes and behaviors of people in these areas, local rituals and magical and religious practices connected with them as well as stories treating about them.Recenzja publikacji doktor Elżbiety Szot-Radziszewskej pt. Miejsca i ludzie, wydanej przez Politechnikę Świętokrzyską w 2013 roku, stanowiącej podsumowanie wieloletnich badań prowadzonych w latach 2008-2013 z mieszkańcami Kielecczyzny. Podczas wywiadów rozmowa kierowana była na miejsca ważne dla rozmówców – zarówno dawniej, jak i dziś – oraz zdarzeń, opowieści i obrzędów mających z nimi związek. Respondenci opowiadali o wsi z czasów dzieciństwa i przekazów osób starszych, życiu religijnym, społeczno-gospodarczym i kulturalnym oraz transformacjach dokonujących się w XX wieku. Przedmiotem badań były bowiem wyobrażenia przestrzenne – obrazy mentalne – rozumiane jako fakt społeczny i znaczący składnik procesu poznawczego, a także efekt kontaktu zmysłowego z przedmiotem lub miejscem, powstające w wyniku percepcji i waloryzacji środowiska. Zarówno w etnograficznych badaniach terenowych, jak i podczas analizy materiału zastosowana została metoda mapowania poznawczego. Analizie poddane zostały opracowane na podstawie części zebranych materiałów antropologiczne mapy mentalne, opis miejsc i obiektów znaczących, postaw i zachowań ludzi w tych przestrzeniach, ponadto obrzędy i praktyki magiczno-religijne w nich wykonywane oraz opowieści o nich traktujące

No full textA folk fable was one of the folk genres that had the unusually significant educative importance. Through the simplicity and generalization of the construction of a story plot, the lack of descriptive elements, aiming at universal depictions, the binary system of characters and the optimistic ending showing the victory of good over evil, the folk fable presented the world of values and shaped their hierarchy. The human characters, deprived of the psychological depth, represented certain morally unambiguous types and were an inexhaustible treasure trove of patterns of behaviour. Unfortunately, the field researches have shown that during the 20th century the folk fables started to vanish from the oral transmission. This makes us ask ourselves a question whether the contemporary adaptations perform the same significant functions as folk fables did, since the realization of them is still necessary for humankind. The author of the following study analyzes three screen adaptations, discussing what picture of the world and a human is given by them and if, therefore, they can perform the same functions as folk fables or, perhaps, their impact is different.Bajka ludowa była jednym z gatunków folkloru mających niezwykle istotne znaczenie wychowawcze. Poprzez prostotę i stereotypowość konstrukcji fabularnych, brak elementów opisowych, dążność do ujęć uniwersalnych, binarny układ postaci i optymistyczne zakończenie, prezentujące zwycięstwo dobra nad złem, ukazywała świat wartości i kształtowała ich hierarchię. Bohaterowie ludzcy, pozbawieni głębi psychologicznej, reprezentowali pewne typy, jednoznaczne pod względem moralnym, i stanowili nieprzebraną skarbnicę wzorców postępowania. Niestety badania terenowe wskazują, że w ciągu XX w. bajka zaczęła zanikać z przekazu ustnego. Należy więc postawić pytanie, czy współczesne adaptacje realizują te same doniosłe funkcje, jakie pełniła bajka ludowa, bo przecież ich realizacja nadal jest człowiekowi niezbędna do prawidłowego rozwoju. Autorka poddaje analizie trzy ekranizacje i wskazuje, jaki obraz świata i człowieka jest w nich prezentowany i czy w związku z tym mogą pełnić te same funkcje, co bajki ludowe, czy też ich oddziaływanie jest odmienne

This is a very important book, which has been fervently awaited by the researchers of rural history for years. The publication is interdisciplinary, presenting the complicated (historically, administratively, economically, and socially) process of founding, functioning and declining of rural settlement forms in a multi-aspect way with the use of research and methodological means elaborated by researchers of various scientific disciplines and sub-disciplines. The monograph includes archaeological, historical, geographic, ethnographic and anthropological articles. The signalized above interdisciplinary character of the whole volume is visible, naturally in a varied
degree, in all articles published in the book.Tekst jest prezentacją refleksji dotyczących monografii zbiorowej: Wieś zaginiona. No full textThe author shares his reflections on state of art in housing and urban planning, deficiencies, expectations and possibilities in the Sahel region of Africa. He notices, that the housing problem in Africa is one of the challenges, which should be solved in order to recover life dignity of African people and secure their rights to traditional family life in acceptable conditions. The paper describes the studies on the typical dispersed urban structures and the need to foster this type of settlement structure and proposals of introduction of new on light steel frame housing system in the area of Sahel, combining the traditional way of building houses with modern technology. The particularly analysed case, is the housing problem in the Republic of Chad. The author presents the basic discussion on this topic and his architectural proposals. Unfortunately, the gap between the needs and the financial feasibility of housing construction in this area, makes this project already at the starting point extremely difficult to be realized without external subventions.Problem mieszkaniowy w Afryce jest jednym z wyzwań, które należy rozwiązać, aby Afrykanie mogli odzyskać godność życiową i zabezpieczyć swoje prawa do tradycyjnego życia rodzinnego w akceptowalnych warunkach. W artykule opisano badania nad typowymi rozproszonymi strukturami miejskimi i potrzebą wspierania tego typu struktur osadniczych oraz propozycji wprowadzenia nowego systemu konstrukcji domów, opartym na lekkim szkielecie stalowym, łączącym tradycyjny sposób budowania domów z nowoczesną technologią. Przypadkiem szczególnie analizowanym jest problem mieszkaniowy w Republice Czadu. Autor przedstawia podstawową dyskusję na ten temat i swoje propozycje architektoniczne. Niestety luka między potrzebami mieszkaniowymi w Czadzie a finansową wykonalnością budownictwa mieszkaniowego w tym obszarze sprawia, że projekt ten, już w punkcie wyjścia, jest niezwykle trudny do realizacji bez uzyskania zewnętrznych dotacji
