Antibiotic Susceptibility of Motile Aeromonas spp. Isolated from Saricay Stream (Canakkale, Turkey)
Dulger, Basaran/0000-0002-3184-2652; Dulger, Basaran/0000-0002-3184-2652WOS: 000318748600029This study was carried out for the determination of the physico-chemical and microbiological quality and antibiogram profiles of the Aeromonas spp. isolated from Saricay stream in Canakkale - Turkey. The results indicated that water from this stream were of poor microbiological quality and unfit for human consumption. A total of 13 Aeromonas species were isolated from sixty (21.66%) water samples. This strains were identified as Aeromonas caviae (53.84%), A. hydrophila (23.07%), A. veronii by. sobria (23.07%). Synthesis, structural aspects, antimicrobial activity and ion transport investigation of five new [1+1] condensed cycloheterophane peptides

The compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, mass, FT-IR, H-1, and C-13 NMR spectral data. The antimicrobial activities of the compounds were evaluated using the disk diffusion method in dimethyl sulfoxide as well as the minimal inhibitory concentration dilution method, against several bacteria and yeast cultures. The results were compared with those of commercial antibiotic and antifungal agents. Structure activity relationships were also discussed. Antifungal activity of Lamium tenuiflorum against some medical yeast Candida and Cryptococcus species
The ethanol extracts obtained from the leaves, rootstock, and the combined formulation of endemic Lamium tenuiflorum Fisch.& Mey (Lamiaceae) have been investigated for their antifungal activities against medical yeast Candida and Cryptococcus species by the visual broth macrodilution method. The MIC values ranged from 3.12 to 25 mg/mL. All the extracts exhibited a strong antifungal effect against the yeast cultures. The extracts exhibited greater antifungal effect against Candida species than Cryptococcus species. Our findings support the use of this plant in traditional medicine for fungal infections especially against candidiasis
Antimicrobial activity of some endemic scrophulariaceae from Turkey
Methanol extracts obtained from endemic Scrophulariaceae, Verbascum chianophyllum Hub.-Mor., V. cilicium Boiss., V. trapifolium (Stapf) Hub.-Mor., V. meinckeanum Murb., V. lyratifolium Kochel, Scrophularia trichopoda Boiss. & Bal., S. candelabrum Heywood, and Pedicularis cadmea Boiss., have been investigated for their antimicrobial activity. Antimicrobial activity was determined with Escherichia coli ATCC 11230, Staphylococcus aureus 6538-P, Klebsiella pneumoniae UC57, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27583, Proteus vulgaris ATCC 8427, Bacillus cereus ATCC 7064, Mycobacterium smegmatis CCM 2067, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 15313, Micrococcus luteus CCM 169, Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Rhodotorula rubra DSM 70403, and Kluyveromyces fragilis ATCC 8608 by the disk diffusion method. The extracts of all plant species had strong antimicrobial activity against the Gram-positive bacteria and yeasts, but no activity was seen against the Gram-negative bacteria used in this study
Antifungal Activity of Hypericum havvae Against Some Medical Candida Yeast and Cryptococcus Species
Dulger, Basaran/0000-0002-3184-2652; Dulger, Basaran/0000-0002-3184-2652WOS: 000334491200014Purpose: To investigate the antifungal activities. of the individual as well as the combined hydroalcohol leaf and root extracts of endemic Hypericum havvae A. Guner (Hyperiaceae). Methods: Each dry powdered plant material (20 g) was soaked in 150 ml of aqueous ethanol (50: 50 % v/v) until complete saturation of the plant material. After the extracts were filtered and evaporated, the antifungal activity of the extracts was tested against medical yeast, Candida (C. albicans ATCC 10231, C. tropicalis ATCC 13808, C. guilliermondii ATCC 6260) and Cryptococcus (C. neoformans ATCC 90112 and C. laurentii 34142) species by visual broth microdilution method. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extract was derived from the results. Ketoconazole was used as the reference standard. Results: MIC values ranged from 3.12 to 25.00 mg/ml. The extracts exhibited strong antifungal effect against the yeast cultures but the combination of the plant extracts (leaf + root) possessed stronger antifungal potency against Candida albicans and Cryptococcus laurentii, with the same MIC value of 1.56 mg/ml. Conclusion: Our findings support the use of Hypericum havvae in traditional medicine for the treatment of fungal infections, especially Candidiasis
Antibacterial activity of three endemic Micromeria species
The antibacterial activity of Micromeria cilicica Hausskn. ex P.H.Davis, Micromeria dolichodontha P.H. Davis and Micromeria crenmophila subsp. amana (Rech. fil.) P.H. Davis was studied using the disk diffusion method and determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against Staylococcus aureus ATCC 6538P, Streptococcus sanguis PTCC 1449, Escherichia coli ATCC 1 1230, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27583 and Klebsiella pneumoniae UC57. The methanol and chloroform extracts of the aerial parts of M. cilicica. M. dolichodontha and M. cremnophila subsp. amana exhibited concentration-dependent antibacterial activity against all tested bacteria
Synthesis, structural aspects, antimicrobial activity and ion transportation investigation of four new [2+2] condensed 24-membered cycloheterphane peptides

The compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, mass, FT-IR, H-1, and C-13 NMR spectral data. The 24-membered macrocycles have well organized symmetrical structures lacking any configurational isomerism. Ion transportation was carried out with macrocycle L (1) and L (4) against Na+, K+ and Ag+ cations. It showed a high propensity of binding with soft Ag+ cation that it undergoes configurational change during complexation. This phenomenon is not observed with hard cations, but K+ ion passes through the cavity while Na+ ions are retained. The antimicrobial activities of the compounds were evaluated using the disk diffusion method in dimethyl sulfoxide as well as the minimal inhibitory concentration dilution method, against several bacteria and yeast cultures. The results were compared with those of commercial antibiotic and antifungal agents. Spectroscopic studies, antimicrobial activities, and crystal structure of N-[2-hydroxy-1-naphthylidene]3, 5-bis(trifluoromethyl)aniline
Dulger, Basaran/0000-0002-3184-2652; Unver, Huseyin/0000-0003-3968-4385; Dulger, Basaran/0000-0002-3184-2652A new Schiff base compound has been synthesized by the reaction of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde with 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)aniline.The title compound was characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and UV-Visible techniques.Its UV-Vis spectra was examined in polar and nonpolar solvents and in acidic and basic media. The crystal structure of the compound showed the OH group to be ortho to the imine group. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1) with a = 11.328(2), b = 6.125(1), c = 11.937(2) angstrom, V = 825.1(2) angstrom(3), D (x) = 1.543 g cm(-3) and Z = 2. An intramolecular O1- H center dot center dot center dot N1 [2.558(7) angstrom] hydrogen bond stabilizes the molecule. The compound has also been characterized by its antimicrobial activities.
