Chapter 4. A more perfect unification

    No full text
In this paper, we provide a new analysis of the Negative Constraint in Vietnamese, whereby the anterior morpheme dã loses its perfect reading in negative contexts. The Nanosyntax approach adopted here is claimed to derive this constraint without the stipulations inherent in existing formal accounts (e.g., Trinh 2005; Duffield 2017; Phan & Duffield 2016, 2019)

    PROGRESS IN VIETNAMESE LINGUISTICS

    No full text
The papers published in this special issue are developed versions of presentations given at an online workshop hosted by Nigel Duffield at Konan University (Kobe, Japan) in March 2022. The presenters at this workshop are a diverse collection of international scholars united by their interest in Vietnamese linguistics: hence, the acronym ‘ISVL’. The “2” in the title indicates that this is the second in a series having its origin in a workshop – also online – organized from Harvard-Yenching Institute in April 2021, titled “Vietnamese Linguistics, Typology and Language Universals.” (ISVL-3 will take place as a hybrid online/in-person workshop in March 2023; it is our hope that the series will continue in future years)

Letter from George Duffield to Governor E. Ransom

A letter of the Rev. Epaphroditus George Duffield, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, to Governor E. Ransom, congratulating the governor on his. election. He goes on to say, They [foreign population] cannot have escaped your notice. I may say that I was particularly instrumental in directing & determining their move to settle in Michigan & may therefore be excused for manifesting some solicitude on their behalf....They ask not, & need not charity; but the peculiarity of their situation will render some legislative interposition? desireable, if not not indispensably necessary. They are in Ottawa count, spreading out into the thickly timbered land n & ne of Black river Lake. They are Hollanders who speak the low Dutch tongue, & frugal industrious & moral ?? of people....They number now nearly 2000 souls: all arrived within a year. Their leader is a minister of the Free church of Holland, & His people, of the same communion. Among their needs are a state road.https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/vrp_1840s/1164/thumbnail.jp

ON THE STRUCTURE AND ACQUISITION OF TELICITY AND UNACCUSATIVITY IN VIETNAMESE

    No full text
In this paper, we investigate Chinese L2 learners' knowledge of two grammatical constraints in Vietnamese: the first, a constraint on the aspectual interpretation of accomplishment predicates, the second pertaining to alternations in the position of embedded subjects in mono-clausal lam causatives. Whereas the former constraint is shared by Vietnamese and Chinese, the two languages differ with respect to the latter. The results of three judgment tasks provide statistically reliable support for the idea that L2 interlanguage grammars are not ultimately limited by Ll patterns; given the absence of explicit teaching and only limited exposure to relevant structures, it is suggested that learners' performance may be guided by UG information

A ROAD MAP TO VIETNAMESE PHRASE STRUCTURE

    No full text
In this chapter we offer a theoretically informed description of Vietnamese clausal syntax, through a parallel description of the structure of the extended verb phrase – the clausal spine (CP) – and of the extended noun phrase (DP). Our approach to phrase structure is explicitly comparative: Vietnamese is considered in a cross-linguistic context in comparison to areally and/or typologically related varieties, with a particular focus on East and Mainland Southeast Asian languages, as well as to more familiar Western European languages

    “Stevens/Duffield House

    No full text
Located at 130 N. Main Ave. The Stevens/Duffield House was originally purchased by Hiram Stevens in 1865. The residence was a grand house that included an aviary, grape arbor, carriage house, and hay barn. In 1874, Stevens purchased the neighboring one room house from Milton Duffield and combined the two residences into a single family home by connecting the two homes with a long narrow corridor. The house was owned by the Stevens family until 1919 when it was purchased by Knox Corbett. Corbett sold the house in 1936 to Hoagland Gates. In 1968 the City of Tucson acquired the house and others as part of the Urban Renewal Project. The Tucson Museum of Art began leasing the building in 1973. Currently, the residence is Café à la C'Art restaurant which is operated by the Tucson Museum of Art

Network tomography from measured end-to-end delay covariance

End-to-end measurement is a common tool for network performance diagnosis, primarily because it can reflect user experience and typically requires minimal support from intervening network elements. However, pinpointing the site of performance degradation from end-to-end measurements is a challenging problem. In this paper, we show how end-to-end delay measurements of multicast traffic can be used to infer the under-lying logical multicast tree and the packet delay variance on each of its links. The method does not depend on cooperation from intervening network elements; multicast probing is bandwidth efficient. We establish desirable statistical properties of the estimator, namely consistency and asymptotic normality. We evaluate the approach through simulations, and analyze its failure modes and their probabilities
