The author gives a synthesis of many years of field investigations of Podgorje on the theme of the traditions of the so-called "old people", of buried treasure, fantastic creatures and events on the boundaries of reality and the impossible. Based on the fact of how many recorded subjects are deeply rooted in the narrative tradition of the local population and which relate to precisely defined locations, the author tries to outline the contours of the traditional landscape of the area between Velebit and the seaAutor donosi sintezu višegodišnjih terenskih istraživanja Podgorja na temu predaja o tzv.

The author presents a synthesis of the results obtained during ethnographic field research carried out in Lepoglava and the surrounding villages in 2011. Envisioned as reconnaissance, it focused on a number of topics related to traditional everyday life, different beliefs in particular. Because of the extremely great number of acquired data, the author decided to pay particular attention to them and elaborate them in a separate paper, structured in several units: fantastic beings and people with supernatural powers, souls of the deceased and nocturnal darkness, magic healing procedures, and the evil eye

"starom stanovništvu" na području Like i Podgorja. The material remains of the life of the ancient people, the population which according to legend inhabited this region in an undefined past time, the people are recognised in various ruins and abandoned structures which do not remember the time of origin. In the region of Lika and Podgorje, the old population were often called Grci or Nemri. They lived in mythical times when the sea was so high that they anchored their boats on the peaks of today’s mountains, they were of a giant’s stature, they were gifted with superhuman powers and exceptional longevity. They were exceptionally affluent and prosperous, but over night they were forced to leave their homes due to adverse weather conditions, such as snow which fell in the midst of summer or when the "bura" northern wind which blew non-stop for years drove them away. Other oral literary texts state how conquerors expelled them, who in turbulent times of the past had passed these regions. Forced to escape, the ancient people left behind their treasure which they could not take with them and protected it with spells so that no one would be able to find it and take it away, whilst for additional security placing fantastic creatures as keepers. Texts of such topics are embroidered with elements of various beliefs and magical practices of great diffusion, and they frequently performed a role in folk oral chronicles in the absence of written history. The paper presents a comparative analysis of the complex of motives noted in the region of Lika and Podgorje, in the context of the analogy from oral literature of the population of the Dinaric cultural areal (where such narratives generally appear). The analysis is based on data published in expert literature, archive sources and systematic field research which the author undertook in the period from 2007 to 2012

BURIED TREASURE IN ORAL TRADITION OF PODGORCI

During April and November 2007 within the scientific project Identities and ethno genesis of Coastal Bunjevci under the leadership of Milana Černelić, PhD, from the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb some elements of the spiritual culture of the coastal Bunjevci in the area of Velebit Podgorje were researched. Despite the depopulation of this area and the complete disappearance of oral tradition, a large number of oral legends about buried treasure were noted. Podgorci (people from Podgorje) remember how many people (amongst them) unsuccessfully searched various locations although some people had found something and had become rich in this way. Although it seems that these legends are unique and local, their motifs have certain parallels in the oral literature and beliefs of southern Slavs and further afield. First of all the perception of the Greeks who lived in these areas log ago comes up. The inhabitants believe that the remains of settlements spread in the environment belonged to Greeks and they tell stories how they moved here because of the snow, which happened in summer, more precisely on St. Peter’s day. According to the tales, the Greeks left their treasure in different places and they returned to take it later. They would occasionally find it or with thanks to the help of the local inhabitants. Podgorci remember different instructions on how to find the treasure, looking to the rising Sun, looking for places from where the sea can be observed in a special way or the location was written in the letters of books. Goats touching the treasure with their horns or often it can be found in a jar which in some cases was cursed. Further more, alongside with the stories of buried treasure, the motif of a snake which guards the treasure is related and together with the motif of the number nine it makes a connection with the ancient Slavic mythical perception of the world. Legends about buried treasure are related to some historic events and personalities such as the escape of King Bela or the curse of the King of Troy, but with specific natural creatures such as Strogir. Despite the large spread of the motifs presented in legends noted during the research, their local components were not neglected. Here is emphasized the need for further interdisciplinary research which would have the aim in the creation of a map of the legendary environment of Podgorje. In this way it would be possible to underline potential archaeological localities as well as represent the oral tradition of this region for tourist purposes

The material published in this article was gathered over many years of field research in the area of the Velebit foothills from Sveti Juraj to Karlobag, derived from within the project The Identity and Ethnogenesis of Coastal Bunjevci and Identity and Ethnoculuture of the Formation of the Bunjevci under the leadership of dr. Milana Černelić from the Department of Ethnology and Cultura Anthropology, Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. The field research included a set of themes from the spiritual culture, including in particular the highlighted prose forms of oral literature. As the informants did not remember the fairy tales, fables, and longer stories, the narrative repertoire is mainly based on short stories, legends and traditions. Given that the greatest number of collected articles fell precisely into the submitted substantial thematic variety and rich expressions, this contribution is based solely on this form of oral literature. This work is conceived as a collection of traditions accompanied with an oral introductory part, which describes the writer and the particular situation’s saying. After the texts themselves, there comes an overview of the relevant motifs associated with the parallels in oral literature and beliefs of the Southern Slavs, and beyond. Among the texts, mostly historical and mythological traditions predominate, along with less common etiology. As with the historical, the etiological lore are mostly related to the period of war against the Turks, when the Bunjevci settled in this area. One special case represents the lore related to the older population, i.e. the Greeks. Within them are discernible transposed memories of historical events mixed in with elements of various folk traditions, especially the images of buried treasure. The natural characteristics of the foothills region are reflected in the various tales, whether it is just about places or a theme close to mythological motifs, such as the belief that on some mountain peaks fairies dance. Thematically speaking, the most numerous are the mythological legends, whose motives are based on the belief in supernatural beings such as fairies, witches, werewolves, Satan, the so-called “Black Man” and the deceased being returned to the living. Also, the mythological tradition includes a wide array of unusual events, of which many were played out at night, often on the Velebit slopes. Finally, there is a special place in the narrative repertoire of coastal Bunjevci who had many amazing stories about snakes
