Ingenieur P.J.
On the necessity of connectivity: linking key characteristics of environmental problems with governance modes
Environmental problems are often multi-faceted and complex by nature, consisting of diverse, intertwined dimensions. In this article, we argue that environmental problem characteristics have consequences for the selection of appropriate governance modes, and finally on policy effectiveness. We rely on an in-depth literature review to proceed in two steps. First, we outline three key environmental problem characteristics: uncertainties, cause–effect mismatches and norm plurality. We then outline six different governance modes capable of producing policies and solutions to tackle challenges arising from the three problem characteristics. Next, through empirical illustrations, we demonstrate the relevance of linking governance modes to these characteristics via the introduction and articulation of the concept of ‘connectivity’, i.e., linking actors, issues, sectors and scale levels towards realizing effective policy solutions for complex environmental problems

Vision Concepts within the landscape of design research
In the landscape of design research, several techniques of speculative design -or design about ideas- have been positioned, each with a different timeframe. Design Fiction and Critical Design, for instance, emerged as making activities that explore the near and the speculative future, respectively. We previously definedVision Concepts as a design-led technique that explores and communicates speculative futures. Even though Vision Concepts, such as long-term concept cars andproducts, have been part of the industry since 1938, previous work has failed to identify and understand them from the design research perspective or comparedthem with other speculative design techniques. This study intends to identify which spot Vision Concepts occupies within the landscape of design research. To that end,we developed a multiple case analysis that includes examples of Vision Concepts, Design Fiction, and Critical Design. This paper will help design researchers identify thesimilarities and differences between Vision Concepts and the other speculative design techniques and gain knowledge about when and why to apply this technique.Design Conceptualization and Communicatio
P.J.: Incremental connector routing
Abstract. Most diagram editors and graph construction tools provide some form of automatic connector routing, typically providing orthogonal or poly-line connectors. Usually the editor provides an initial automatic route when the connector is created and then modifies this when the connector end-points are moved. None that we know of ensure that the route is of minimal length while avoiding other objects in the diagram. We study the problem of incrementally computing minimal length object-avoiding poly-line connector routings. Our algorithms are surprisingly fast and allow us to recalculate optimal connector routings fast enough to reroute connectors even during direct manipulation of an object’s position, thus giving instant feedback to the diagram author.

The role of government and financial institutions during a housing market crisis: a case study of the Netherlands
The generous mortgage tax relief enjoyed in the Netherlands and the possible existence of a house price bubble cannot explain the sharp decrease of house prices in the Netherlands in the period from 2011–2013. This sharp decline can, however, be explained by the rigorous adjustments to mortgage lending criteria after 2011. Key financial institutions in the Netherlands were more directly responsible for the deep crisis of the home-ownership market during this period. This was largely due to the specific interests of these organisations, mainly based on macro-economic considerations and the desire to enlarge the equity of the banks, which outweighed the problems on the housing market.OLD Housing System
