    No full text
3 p.Irah Chase, the father of the author of Letter 286, Thomas S. Chase, writes another letter in a series concerning his daughter Emma to T.Z.R. Jones. The “mutual misunderstanding” between Emma and Mrs. Stone mentioned by Thomas is also the subject of this letter, and Irah suggests that Emma return for the next term in order to repair her relation with Mrs. Stone. Irah also clarifies the status of Mollie, T.Z.R. Jones’ daughter, who was mentioned in Letter 286. Mollie is a friend of Emma’s, and Irah does not want to see them separated. The rest of the letter consists of Irah articulating a sincere reconciliation grounded in Christian faith, culminating in the written recitation of the Lutheran hymn Blest Be the Tie That Binds by John Fawcett

The Burnett Archive of Working Class Autobiographies was gathered together by John Burnett, David Vincent and David Mayall whilst compiling their three volumes annotated bibliography, "The Autobiography of the Working Class" (Harvester Press, 1984-1989). This book includes descriptions of unpublished autobiographies and indicates their locations. Excerpts from some of the autobiographies have been published in "Destiny obscure: autobiographies of childhood, education, and family from the1820s to the 1920s", edited by John Burnett (Routledge 1994 and A. Lane, 1982). The authors "sought to identify not only the large numbers of printed works scattered in various local history libraries and record offices, but also extant private memoirs, many of which remain hidden in family attics, known only to the author and a handful of relatives" (Introduction to vol.1, p. xxix). The criteria for inclusion were: the writers were working class for at least part of their lives; they wrote in English; and they lived for some time in England, Scotland or Wales between 1790 and 1945. John Burnett was professor of social history at Brunel University from 1972 to 1990.Alice Maud Chase's (1880-1968) outline of her family history. Chase also outlines her home life, her involvement with the church and her experiences of work and relationships

Instant-win products and prize draws: are these forms of gambling?

Instant-win marketing and prize draws are not particularly new but many companies (particularly in the U.K.) appear to be aiming them at younger age groups. This brief paper argues that some children appear to "chase" their losses on instant-win products in the same way a gambler chases losses, and that they are a form of adolescent gambling or, at the least, a gambling precursor. This paper also briefly overviews the prize draw culture in the U.K. Policy recommendations for both instant-win and prize draw products are outlined
