‘Vagatio mentis’. L’ossessione per le immagini tra amore, peccato e malattia
The paper offers an analysis of different types of sources – literary, religious, and juridical – that address the issue of the medieval obsession with images and the ways in which they influenced the minds of individuals. These testimonies are the product of a shared imaginary and are presented as evidence of the rationalisation of forms of malaise in the imaginal realm. They all attempted, each with its own linguistic, rhetorical, and communicative codes, to account for the influence that material and immaterial images could exert on the minds of individuals, for example by causing states of profound psychic and physical prostration

L’immaginazione nella Vita nova
This article analyses the concept of imagination in the Vita nova by relating it to the ways in which Dante was influenced by patristic Christian anthropology. Within the realm of the latter, the concepts of image and imagination played a central role in the medieval interpretation and representation of reality. Although intrinsically linked to the image, the imagination can wield greater power, because it assumes that the image is active (imago plus actio, imago agens). The aspect of image in the Vita nova is part
of the broader question of the performative power of images in the Middle Ages, which also included, for example, verbal and gestural images in the world of theatre and jesting

L’uso della danza nella costruzione cristiana dell’alterità religiosa nella Tarda Antichità
The article analyses a number of late antique Christian sources that use choreutic gesture to highlight the cultural alterity of pagan cults, Judaism and heretical movements. The Christian intellectual critique of dancing is not interpreted as an aversion to the practice per se, but as part of an anthropological process that encouraged men to become perfect imitators of the angelic choreia in the Platonic framework. This Christian choreia did not only characterize a presumed Ideal City, but also had to be performed during life on earth. It excluded infames, pagans, Jews and heretics, namely all those that did not comply with the new gestural and behavioural schemata defined by Christian intellectuals
Spectacula turpitudinum. Christian Schemata of the Dancing Body
The aim of this paper is to offer an analysis of the Christian intellectual perspective of choreutic gesture, putting forward the hypothesis that by regulating dancing, late antique bishops became spokesmen for an anthropology of gesture which on the one hand demonised all forms of performative dancing and on the other hand encouraged men to become perfect imitators of an angelic choreia in the Platonic framework. This choreia was supposed to guide the behavioural movement and schemata of men’s bodies. However, it was more than just a characteristic of a presumed Ideal City; it also had to be realised in life on earth, the anticipatory mirror image of the heavenly city
