    [fre] Cet article a deux objectifs : le premier est de décrire les modalités de mise au point d'une innovation majeure propre à l'industrie de la fonderie, le procédé de coulée en moule plein ; le second objectif est de dégager quelques propriétés caractéristiques du processus d'innovation, en montrant les modifications qu'il suscite dans les structures productives. Au terme d'une rapide étude des grandes orientations du changement technique en fonderie, qui montrera comment se déterminent le contenu et l'orientation de la recherche tchnique dans cette activité, nous identifions les facteurs technico-scientifiques qui apparaissent comme déter­minants dans la genèse de l'innovation. Puis nous proposons une formulation générale de l'impact de l'innovation sur les structures productives de la fonderie, en mettant en évidence la tendance simultanée à l'accroissement de la complexité des procédés techniques et à la simplification des modes opératoires.     Over the twentieth century universities in the industrialized world have evolved from being "universities of culture" to "universities of innovation." Policy makers and universities themselves see that one of their major roles is supporting industrial innovation and thus economic growth. We argue that this rests on a mis-cconception of the nature of innovation and the value of universities.
