Housing Institutions & Governanc
Textual and contextual legal history
Paradoxically, Legal History is both everywhere and nowhere. The study of History is unavoidable in a common law system based on precedent. Doctrinal legal study is always a historical study; every review of the case law is an exercise in historical analysis looking at how the law has changed over time. It is rare that a legal development is genuinely new and even where it is, a historical perspective will show how it became considered necessary for that gap in the law to be filled. Yet, despite this, Legal History is increasingly absent from the Law School curriculum. This chapter explores why this is to be regretted and explores how divisions within Legal History are to blame. It proposes a new way of understanding the subject as including at least the study of Textual and Contextual Legal History before contending that the study of Law and History must be an interdisciplinary endeavour
Oral History Interview, Nick Doe (1195)
In this 2011 interview, Nick Doe discusses his experience growing up in a female body and how he struggled to express and name his sexual and gender identity. He also expresses his frustration with the UW-Madison system which he believes marginalizes people of color, trans, and lower class people. To learn more about this oral history, download & review the index first (or transcript if available). It will help determine which audio file(s) to download & listen to.In his interview with Stefani Coleman, Nick Doe discusses his experiences as a trans youth and student at Riverside High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Born female bodied, Doe struggled as an adolescent to express and name his sexual and gender identity. After attending Project Q meetings and participating in female-to-male drag as a high schooler, Doe came out to close friends as trans. Doe narrates his coming out experience as well as the harassment he has faced at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Doe also expresses his frustration with the University of Wisconsin system and administration, university affiliated groups, and the larger LQBTQ movement, which he believes marginalizes people of color, trans, and lower class people. Doe comments on the nexus of class, race, gender, and sexuality, and ends by sharing his thoughts about the state of society in relation to queer and trans issues
Reverend Kenneth Doe, August 2009
An August 10 interview with Dr. Kenneth Doe of Bethesda Christian Fellowship Church (which Crawford describes as Baptist Church). Doe discusses the demographic and linguistic changes to the island that have affected the retention of spirituals and religious practices, such as seeking. Doe discusses the history of religious practices, from enslavement to emancipation, as well as the history of Brick Baptist and the prayer houses (or prays houses). He also discusses the prayer house course of events versus the churches. He discusses that congregations still keep some of these traditions alive today in prayer services, with marked differences. The recording abruptly cuts off a minute before the end of the track. The recording splits at 19:15 onto a new tape, and picks up mid-conversation while Doe is discussing the harmonies of the worship choir. He also discusses the talents of the senior choir. He discusses how song leaders are cultivated within families to replace family members who have left home or passed away. Doe discusses the popularity of certain songs. He then shifts where the acoustic services, testimonies, and structures of spirituals during church services. Doe also briefly discusses his efforts to keep spirituals alive in his congregation, and why he feels it is important to keep the spirituals forward and train young people in a wide variety of music. He discusses the formation of the senior choir and the construction of the congregation building. The interview terminates in the middle of Crawford posing a new question about the ring shout.https://digitalcommons.coastal.edu/eric-crawford-oral-histories/1000/thumbnail.jp
