    No full text
Mācību grāmatā apskatīto jautājumu apjoms no vienas puses un nepieciešamība tos apgūt ierobežotā laika periodā no otras puses, prasa īpašu pieeju apgūstamās vielas izklāstā. Saīsinātā veidā izklastīti teorētiskie pamati, metodiskās rekomendācijas dažādu uzdevumu izpildei, doti kontroljautājumi, uzdevumi, vingrinājumi un piemēri to izpildei.

BIM Education in Riga Technical University

    No full text
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a complex process of managing not only design documentation in 3D form but it also includes all the consecutive stages of the design analysis, followed by construction management, and including facility management after the site completion. The success in the collaboration to unite common efforts of architects, constructors and HVAC engineers would make the work of all involved stakeholders more productive because the existing information technologies provide this option already for a long time. The training for effective use of this relatively new and very complex approach from the very beginning of the building lifecycle in the construction industry is even a more complex task. Universities have to join the promotion of BIM ideas not only to the designers and engineers, but to a much wider public than at present. The history of BIM teaching and the approaches used at Riga Technical University (RTU) are outlined in this paper. RTU along with several other universities from Lithuania have joined the EU sponsored Leonardo da Vinci project BIMTRAIN initiated by regional software distributer and developer AGA-CAD which facilitates the BIM implementation through the training

Nowadays Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) undoubtedly is recognized as a design media rather than a design tool and is widely accepted in architectural practice. The general goal architects want is to visually express design and illustrate their projects or ideas using both professional experience and personal computerized creative skills. Currently rapid advancements in the growth of information technology which are used to communicate architectural design projects. CAAD is a particularly dynamic field that is developing through the actions of architects, software developers, researchers, technology, users and society alike. The paper deals with the teaching of information technology in architectural schools. The delivery of CAAD knowledge is discussed. Academic courses basically are about the development of computer aided creative and problem solving skills in context with fast changing CAAD media. It is more difficult to teach the common principles behind the software which are general and will most likely survive everchanging software versions. Limited credit points for the subjects do not allow developing detailed courses for training particular software. An evaluation of the promptitude of the architectural students at Riga Technical University for the self-sufficient problem solving tasks was performed. Four different computer based design tasks were given to the students using the same massing model of building. The statistical analysis regarding an average time required to complete the exercises and correlations between different skills is presented at the conclusion. Further developments of architectural problem solving are discussed for implementation into the education syste

FractalZ – Non-traditional Way of FormZ Application

    No full text
In the past year the students taking elective course, Computer Aided Architectural Design at Riga Technical University, were not quite interested in a self-supporting study of formZ. There was one overview lecture in the course dedicated to formZ in which the previous year students participating in the formZ Joint Study Program 2005-2006 presented the details of their projects and shared their tips and tricks about getting started with the software. The projects completed with formZ during the course were not compulsory, but the students could earn additional bonuses for a final grade if they used it. The only enthusiastic individual found common interest with a friend studying mathematics in another university and they made some study on fractals. In my course, fractals were only mentioned in regards to the types of computer graphics. Since this is not an area for architects, a few examples were shown and further links given. This and the lecture on formZ was the only kick-off for the study report prepared this year

The present time can be characterized as an era of digital revolution which has resulted in a creativity burst in different design applications. Rapid advancements in Information Technology (IT) are still under way and are widely used to communicate architectural design projects. The paper deals with an exploration of some elements of IT, how they can be integrated into both architectural design process and university curricula. In academic courses contemporary CAAD knowledge basically are about the development of computer aided creative and problem solving skills in context with fast changing CAAD media. It becomes more difficult to teach the common principles behind individual software which is general and will most likely survive ever-changing software versions. Limited university class contact hours for the subjects do not allow developing of detailed courses for training particular software. A case study is presented about the evaluation of the promptitude of the architectural students for the self sufficient problem solving tasks. Statistical analysis of the data revealed strong linear correlation between the time to complete particular exercise and preliminary CAD competence level among the students, thus clearly demonstrating the importance of CAD training in effective use of software
