Influence of Zinc Oxide on Thermoplastic Elastomer-Based Composites: Synthesis, Processing, Structural, and Thermal Characterization

    No full text
It was aimed to investigate how thermal conductivity and stability properties of synthesized thermoplastic elastomers were influenced by zinc oxide (ZnO) additives which differed in size and surface treatment. ZnO particles were prepared by the homogeneous precipitation method by mixing aqueous solutions of hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) and zinc nitrate. The obtained particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as a modifier to reduce aggregation among the ZnO particles. The composites, prepared by melt compounding method, were characterized in terms of their morphology and thermal properties. Uniformly distributed surface treated particles caused an enhancement in thermal conductivity properties. At 10 wt% ZnO concentration the thermal conductivity of composite reached 1.7 W/mK compared with 0.3 W/mK for the neat polymer. At the same filler loading, ZnO nanoparticles exhibited a greater effect on thermal conductivity compared with submicron sized particles. It was found that the coefficient of thermal expansion of composites decreased at low temperature (55 degrees C) with increasing ZnO content. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the neat polymer and the composites were resistant up to 340 degrees C without significant mass loss. (C) 2015 Society of Plastics Engineer

Effect of ZnO type and concentration on the mophology, thermal, and mechanical properties of poly(ether ester)/ZnO composites

Poly(ether ester) (PEE) copolymers were synthesized in a two-stage process involving transesterification and polycondensation. The synthesized copolymer and the zinc oxide (ZnO) were used in composite preparation by melt compounding. The influence of ZnO type and concentration on the morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were studied. DSC and XRD analyses indicated that crystallinity of composites was slightly reduced with ZnO content. Homogeneous dispersion of fillers in the polymer matrix was observed through morphological analyses. While in general tensile strength and elongation at break values of the composites decreased with increasing ZnO content, elastic modulus values increased with the addition of ZnO. Moreover, ZnO particles were modified with poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) and a slight improvement in mechanical properties was observed, respectively over the composites containing unmodified particles. Schulman EMEA;PolyOne;Ticona Engineering Polymers;SenoplastEUROTEC 2011 Conference, in Conjunction with EQUIPLAST -- 14 November 2011 through 15 November 2011 -- Barcelona -- 88784In this study, composites were obtained by introducing the zinc oxide (ZnO) fillers into the block copolymers of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and poly(tetramethylene oxide) (PTMO) by melt compounding method. The thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion of composites were investigated as a function of ZnO size and concentration. It was found that addition of ZnO increased thermal stability, while it decreased coefficient of thermal expansion of the composites at low temperatures (55 to 70 °C)

WOS: 000296786300004PubMed ID: 21484419The aim of this study was to investigate of the efficacy and reliability of a novel antimicrobial hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticle coating of urethral catheters, in the prophylaxis of biofilm formation and bacteriuria in rabbits. A total of 60 male rabbits were randomized to the control and study groups and each group was divided into three subgroups depending on 3, 5 and 7 days of the urethral catheterization period. The rabbits in the study group were catheterized with Ag+-incorporated nano-HA coated urethral catheters and those in the control group with standard silicon-latex urethral catheters. Urine and catheter surface smear samples were conducted for bacteriological analysis. Catheter cross-section samples were undergone measuring of biofilm thickness. Tissue samples of bladder and urethra were inspected for histological changes. The results indicate that at the end of 7 days of the catheterization period, the number of the rabbits with bacteriuria was significantly lower in the study group versus control group (p (A ) = 0.020). The biofilm formation on luminal surface of the catheters was significantly thinner in the study group versus control group, at the end of 5 and 7 days of the catheterization period (0.035 and 0.035, respectively). No histological adverse change or particle penetration was detected in the urothelium. In conclusion, it was observed that Ag+ + HA nanoparticle coating significantly lowered the incidence of catheter-related bacteriuria and decreased biofilm formation, at the end of 7 days study period. The novel antimicrobial urethral catheter coating appeared to have a potential in the prophylaxis of catheter-induced urinary tract infections

From Thread to Fabric: Anthropology and Its Interpreters

    No full text
In the Conclusion of the book edited by Hande Birkalan Gedik and Fabiana Dimpfelmeier, the author traces the dynamics between the thread and the fabric, going back to Fredric Barth's seminal 2000 Sydney Mintz lecture, published in 2002. Using different examples, from ideas that speak of global anthropological concerns, to the more particular issues of what it means to produce (and use) the anthropological knowledge, the chapter emphasizes the need to understand different regional traditions. This open access edition of ‘Fabrics of Anthropological Knowledge: Changing Perspectives in Europe and Beyond’, edited by Hande Birkalan-Gedik and Fabiana Dimpflmeier has been funded by Georg und Franziska Speyer’sche Hochschulstiftung and the Open Access Publication Fund of Goethe University Frankfurt am Main
