Designing a bidirectional, adaptive neural interface incorporating machine learning capabilities and memristor-enhanced hardware

    No full text
Building bidirectional biointerfaces is one of the key challenges of modern engineering and medicine, with dramatic potential impact on bioprosthetics. Two of the major challenges of biointerface design concern signal stability and power efficiency. The former entails: a) ensuring that biosignal inputs corresponding to the same ground truth (e.g. patient “intentions”) are recorded and interpreted consistently and b) maintaining the mapping from biointerface stimulation outputs to behavioral outputs (e.g. muscle movements). In this work we demonstrate how machine learning techniques, state-of-art nanoelectronics and microfluidics can combine forces to build and test low-power, adaptable biointerfaces that address both key challenges. Specifically, we demonstrate that: 1) we can emulate the input/output transfer characteristics of a structure biological neural network (BNN) with an artificial one (ANN), 2) it is possible to translate the resulting, “ideally trained” ANN into a hardware network using RRAM devices as synapses without significant loss of accuracy, despite concerns in the community about RRAM device reliability and 3) using a very simple mechanism of shifting the active stimulation electrode can fully restore functionality after the initial stimulation site degrades, prolonging the usable lifetime of the biointerface significantly. In this manner we place a key stepping stone towards building self-adjusting, low-power biointerfaces, themselves a foundational stepping stone towards adaptable, low-power bioprostheses

Photolysis of m-phenylene-bis(Chlorodiazirine)+2-vinylpyridine: does an indolizine chromophore inhibit the photolysis of a diazirine?

    No full text
The photolysis of m-phenylene-bis(chlorodiazirine) in the presence of 2-vinylpyridine (VP) yields the m-phenylene-bis(indolizine) by a mechanism involving two consecutive photoreactions. Photolysis of a first diazirine ring generates a carbene which reacts with 2-VP to give, via a sequence of fast thermal reactions, a first product including both the indolizine and the chlorodiazirine moieties. Although in the lowest excited singlet state of the primary product, the excitation is localized on the indolizine unit, the photolysis of this product induces the decomposition of the second diazirine ring to give a second carbene which yields the final product via the same sequence of reactions: formation of a 2-vinylpyridinium ylide, cyclization and elimination of HCl. Analysis of the absorption and fluorescence spectra indicates that an upper excited singlet state, with the excitation localized on the diazirine ring, is only a few kJ/mol above S-1. It can therefore be populated by thermal activation of S-1 so that there is, seemingly, an endothermic intramolecular energy transfer from the indolizine moiety to the diazirine ring. Zuev, Doctor of Law, professor, Department of Justice and Law Enforcement, South Ural State University, Chelyabinsk, Russia. The author draws attention to the fact that modern information technology opens up new opportunities in the processing, transmission, receipt, storage, systematization and use of information in the legal fields, including criminal proceedings, allowing the formation of evidence in electronic form. In this regard, all criminal procedural activity at the present stage of the development of society is becoming more and more technological. The author justifies that the transition to high-tech criminal proceedings will require a radical restructuring of the entire system, including procedures for action and decision-making, data protection, verification and evaluation of evidence provided electronically. Admittedly, dramatic changes to the entire system are inevitable, and lawyers and citizens must be prepared for them. At the same time, changes should not reduce the feeling of security in the sphere of criminal proceedings

E-mail: [email protected]. Zuev Sergey Vasilievich – Doctor of Sciences (Law), Head of the Department of Law Enforcement and National Security, South Ural State University, Chelyabinsk, Russian Federation. Email: [email protected]. The author considers the development of the Russian Criminal Procedure Institution of using digital information and its carriers in criminal case proving. It is stated that the institution dates back to 2010 since the adoption of the Federal Law № 143-FZ, which introduced Clause 186.1 “Obtaining information about connections between subscribers and (or) subscriber units” into the RF Criminal Procedure Code. Since then, the organization providing communication services have been providing submitting information in a variety of physical media. The author proves the prospects for the development of electronic information backup and many other issues of dealing with digital information and its carriers. Attention is drawn to the fact that criminal proceedings should be developed on account of the modern information and communication relations in society
