    Design: Tessa Gengnagel Opening words “So, what is the use of your edition? And who actually uses it?” When you ask such questions to scholarly editors, chances are you see them flinch a little, before they set out on a long and enthusiastic exposé about why exactly their material is so interesting and truly deserves a proper edition. If its popularity depended on the level of enthusiasm of its editors, the digital scholarly edition would conquer the world. But at the same time, editors are v..

    ICT as Technical Change in the Matching and Production Functions of a Pissarides-Dixit-Stiglitz model

    No full text
    In this paper we integrate two workhorse models in economics: Themonopolistic competition model of Dixit and Stiglitz and the search unemploymentmodel of Pissarides. Information and communication technology (ICT) is interpretedas i) technical progress in the matching function of the Pissarides labour marketsearch model where it is increasing the probability of filling a vacancy, and ii) astechnical change in the production function of the Dixit-Stiglitz goods market modelwhere it is increasing fixed costs and decreasing variable costs. All effects together,modelled as a permanent once-and-for-all ICT and Internet shock, increase thevacancy/ unemployment ratio, decrease the long-run equilibrium unemployment rate,and increase wages. Keywords: ICT, Monopolistic competition, unemployment.macroeconomics ;

    Direct association between the Ret receptor tyrosine kinase and the Src homology 2-containing adapter protein Grb7

    No full text
    Adapter proteins containing Src homology 2 (SH2) domains link transmembrane receptor protein-tyrosine kinases to downstream signal transducing molecules. A family of SH2 containing adapter proteins including Grb7 and Grb10 has been recently identified. We had previously shown that Grb10 associates with Ret via its SH2 domain in an activation-dependent manner (Pandey, A., Duan, H., Di Fiore, P.P., and Dixit, V.M. (1995) J. Biol, Chem. 270, 21461-21463). We now demonstrate that the related adapter molecule Grb7 also associates with Ret in vitro and in vivo, and that the binding of the SH2 domain of Grb7 to Ret is direct. This binding is dependent upon Ret autophosphorylation since Grb7 is incapable of binding a kinase-defective mutant of Ret. Thus two members of the Grb family, Grb7 and Grb10, likely relay signals emanating from Ret to other, as yet, unidentified targets within the cell

    A comment on "An arbitrage-free approach to quasi-option value" by Coggins and Ramezani

    In their article ?An Arbitrage-Free Approach to Quasi-Option Value? [J. Environm. Econom. Management 35, 103-125, 1998], Coggins and Ramezani interpreted the concept of quasi-option value introduced by Arrow and Fisher [Quart. J. Econom. 88, 1974, 312-319] as being identical to Dixit and Pindyck?s real option value. This means their approach differs from the approach by Fisher and Hanemann [J. Environm. Econom. Management 14, 183-190, 1987] who formalized the concept of quasi-option value a decade before. By indirectly characterizing Dixit and Pindyck?s real option value Coggins and Ramezani confirmed classic results in the field of real options theory. --

    Background: 'World free of obesity and diabetes’ campaign ' began in 2013. As a part of it "90 days weight loss and Diabetes reversal challenge" for motivating the followers, a trial was organized to see impact of this competitive spirit. Objective: To assess the impact of competitive spirit on weight, waist circumference and HbA1c among the followers of Dixit Lifestyle. Method: 544 participants submitting reports at the start and end of 3 months were selected for the analysis in this "90 days weight loss and Diabetes reversal challenge" trial. Results: Average weight loss for overall 544 participants was 4.12 kg, waist circumference loss was 2.29 inches and average HbA1c reduction was 0.428 gm%. While average weight loss for 223 Diabetic participants was 4.35 kg, waist circumference loss was 2.31 inches and average HbA1c reduction was 0.92 gm%. 80 Diabetics converted to Pre-diabetic and 10 to Non-diabetics status at the end of “90 days weight loss and Diabetes Reversal Challenge”. While from the 253 Pre-diabetics, 59 became Non-diabetics. Among 223 diabetics, medicines were reduced in 44 and stopped in 16. Conclusion: It was observed that, competitive spirit among the followers of Dixit Lifestyle had a positive impact on weight loss, inch loss and reduction in HbA1c. Also it was seen that Dixit Lifestyle caused a significant reduction in requirement of anti-diabetic molecules or drugs

    Impact of hepatitis C on survival in dialysis patients: a link with cardiovascular mortality?

    No full text
    Recent evidence has been accumulated showing that anti-HCV-positive serologic status is significantly associated with lower survival in dialysis populations, but the mechanisms underlying this negative relationship are still unclear. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the published medical literature concerning the impact of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection on all-cause and disease-specific mortality of patients on regular dialysis. The relative risk of all-cause, cardiovascular and liver disease-related mortality was regarded as the most reliable outcome end-point. Study-specific relative risks were weighted by the inverse of their variance to obtain fixed- and random effect pooled estimates for mortality with HCV across the published studies. We identified fourteen observational studies involving 145 608 unique patients on long-term dialysis. Pooling of study results demonstrated that anti-HCV antibody was an independent and significant risk factor for death in patients on maintenance dialysis. The summary estimate for adjusted relative risk (all-cause mortality) was 1.35 with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.251.47. Stratified analysis showed that the adjusted RR for liver disease-related death was 3.82 (95% CI, 1.92; 7.61); heterogeneity statistics, Ri = 0.58 (P-value by Q-test = 0.087). The adjusted RR for cardiovascular mortality was 1.26 (95% CI, 1.10; 1.45); no heterogeneity was found (NS). This meta-analysis of observational studies indicates that anti-HCV-positive patients on dialysis have an increased risk of either liver or cardiovascular disease-related mortality compared with anti-HCV-negative patients. Further studies are in progress to understand better the link between HCV and cardiovascular risk among patients on maintenance dialysis

    Test for symmetry and confidence interval of the parameter μ of skew-symmetric-Laplace-uniform distribution

    No full text
    The skew symmetric Laplace uniform distribution SSLUD(μ) is introduced in Lohot, R. K. and Dixit, V. U. (2024) using the skewing mechanism of Azzalini (1985). Here we derive the most powerful (MP) test for symmetry of the SSLUD(μ). Since the form of the test statistic is complicated and it is difficult to obtain its exact distribution, critical values and the power of MP test are obtained using simulation. Further, we construct a confidence interval (CI) for parameter μ assuming asymptotic normality and empirical distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator of μ. These two methods are compared based on the average length and coverage probability of the CI. Finally, the CI of the parameter μ is constructed using data on the transformed daily percentage change in the price of NIFTY 50, an Indian stock market index given in Lohot, R. K. and Dixit, V. U. (2024).21 pages, 7 table

    Electrochemically impregnated aluminum-stabilized alpha-nickel hydroxide electrodes

    No full text
    Nickel-positive electrodes obtained by electrochemical impregnation of aluminum-substituted alpha-nickel hydroxide are found to deliver a reversible discharge capacity of ca. 450 mAh/g. This is much higher than the capacity of beta-nickel hydroxide electrodes [200 mAh/g: this work; 225 mAh/g: Dixit et al., J. Power Sources, 63, 167 (1996)] prepared under identical conditions and pasted electrodes comprising cobalt-doped nickel hydroxide [345 mAh/g: Faure et al., J. Power Sources, 36, 497 (1991)]. These observations suggest that the theoretical target-capacity for high-performance nickel-positive electrodes must be revised from the currently accepted value of 289 mAh/g (le exchange) to 491 mAh/g [1.7e exchange: Corrigan and Knight, J. Electrochem. Soc., 136, 613 (1989)]. (C) 1999 The Electrochemical Society. S1099-0062(98)08-044-4. All rights reserved
