Mapping the Discipline of the Olympic Games An Author-Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
The authors conducted an author cocitation analysis on prominent authors writing about the Olympics during the 1990s. Author cocitation is an established bibliometric technique that can be used to measure the relative similarities of topics written about by the cited authors. This enables a visual representation of the “intellectual space” of the discipline, in this case the Olympics, to be created for the period under review. So core and peripheral research areas are identified, along with their major contributors. The representation appears as a two-dimensional cluster-enhanced map. Subject expertise was then applied to the results to place labels on the generated clusters of authors and their topics

    No full text
AbstractThe paper describes the processes of establishing Shift2Rail JU, and its preliminary and current operation. The focus is on functions in legal, financial, innovative, and best practice areas related to making railway sector competitive, efficient, and aimed to ensure the regional and global sustainable development in Europe. The important role of member states within Shift2Rail JU in coordination of the national and European policies, ensuring transparent and balanced access to research and innovation projects for Central and Eastern European countries. The reason for motivation for SMEs and academia in the mentioned countries also is a significant part of the presentation

Termination of DNA replication drives genomic instability via multiple mechanisms

Data availability: Raw sequencing data can be accessed at the NIH Sequence Read Archive under accession number PRJNA1244804.Supplementary data are available online at: https://academic.oup.com/nar/article/54/2/gkaf1519/8427117?login=true#supplementary-data .Termination of DNA replication is a surprisingly complex process that contributes critically to genome stability and cell viability. And even though progress was made to establish the consequences that arise if termination is going awry, the precise molecular mechanisms of fork fusion events and the coordination with key factors that ensure that DNA replication is brought to a successful conclusion remain poorly understood. We therefore investigated replication termination in Escherichia coli, focusing specifically on the interplay between replication fork fusions and genomic stability, the Tus–ter replication fork trap, and key DNA-processing enzymes. By utilizing whole genome sequencing, immunoblotting, and recombination reporter assays, we demonstrate that local hyper-recombination is induced wherever forks meet and that the combined loss of factors such as RecG helicase and 3′ exonucleases causes extreme over-replication in the terminus region of the chromosome. Unexpectedly, cells lacking Tus exhibit elevated R-loop levels, revealing an unanticipated connection between the fork trap and R-loop metabolism. These findings underscore the complexity of replication termination and its central role in maintaining bacterial genome stability, while providing mechanistic insights with implications for understanding replication termination in more complex organisms and developing new antimicrobial strategies. The work was supported by Research Grants BB/N014995/1 and BB/W000393/1 from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council to C.J.R. Public perception of the appropriateness of COVID-19 management strategies and level of disturbances in daily activities: A focus on educational level

    No full text
Background This study investigated the association between public perception of the appropriateness of management strategies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic and the level of disturbances in daily activities reported by the general population. Methods This cross-sectional study used Korea Community Health Survey conducted from August to November 2020. Public perception of COVID-19 management strategies included those implemented by the government (central, city or provincial, and administrative districts), the mass media, regional medical institutions, and neighbors. The subjective level of disturbances in daily activities was measured using a 0–100 numeric rating scale developed by Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Multivariable linear regression analysis was used. A subgroup analysis was conducted based on education level. Results The present study analyzed 211,353 participants. Compared to individuals who perceived that the management strategies implemented during the pandemic was ‘highly appropriate,’ those who reported ‘mediocre appropriateness’ (β: -1.96, p-value: <0.001) or ‘low appropriateness’ (β: -3.60, p-value: 0.010) reported higher levels of subjective disturbances. The appropriateness of measures implemented by the mass media was associated with levels of subjective disturbances felt by individuals of lower education with statistical significance, whereas that applied by the mass media and the government were important in those with higher education. Conclusions The findings suggest the importance of public perception of management strategies when implementing containment policies and minimizing its disturbances on daily lives is essential. © 2023 Ju et al. Rare is Beautiful? The Relationship between the Rareness of Technological Resources and the Value of the Resources (presented by co-author)

    No full text
(Presented by co-author) We examine firms’ development of a rare technological resource and substantiate the mechanisms through which the development of a rare technological resource leads to the creation of valuable resources, a critical source of competitive advantage. In particular, we conceptualize value creation and its sustainability at the resource level, clarifying the link between resource development and value generation. We build our theory exploiting the fundamental tension in the strategic factor market, where firms obtain others’ resources to develop their own resources and at the same time, strive to isolate their resources from potential competitors. We argue that the degree of rareness of a technological resource has an inverted U-shape relationship with the value of the resource, and the sustainability of that value, as reflected by temporal duration and breadth of the adopted fields. Our analysis utilizing the topic modeling method to operationalize the rareness at the time of a resource development is based on over 4,000 U.S. nanotechnology patents. The result provides strong support for hypotheses. We contribute to literature by converting conceptual and empirical conflation between resource characteristics and resource-generated values in the resource-based view literature to testable hypotheses
