THE IDIOLECT OF REVEREND ECONOMOS DIMITAR POPNIKOLOV PETKANOV
A less studied talented author and brother of the popular fiction writer Konstantin Petkanov, priest
Dimitar wrote in the 1950s. This publication analyzes several parameters of his idiolect: phonetic peculiarities (reflex of ѣ, ѫ,
ъ; epenthetic [l]; reflexes of the [tʃ] [dʒ] groups; phonetic dialectisms; phonetic doublets); morphological paradigm (case
inflections; noun form for number; dualis; nomina collectiva; extended Church Slavonic suffix for adjectives; dialectal and
contracted pronoun forms; a temporal system characterized by high frequency of the verbs in terms of origin, distribution and
stylistic differentiation); lexical specifics (in terms of origin, distribution and stylistic differentiation). Emphasis is placed on
those lexical layers that constitute and ditinguish the author’s language. Hapaxes (produced using morphological and non-
morphological methods), rare words, semantic transponents, dialectisms, colloquial vocabulary and foreign words are studied.
All linguistic phenomena are examined retrospectively and in comparison with the synchronous linguistic situation before and
after the orthographic reform of 1945 in order to highlight the innovative contribution and the mechanisms through which the
author enriched the contemporary Bulgarian vocabulary. Occasionalisms, dialectal and archaic units occur more often in
Petkanov’s poetic works than in his fiction. The source material has been excerpted from Volume 1 (January – March) and
Volume 2 (April – June) of the hagiographic tetralogy “The Year of Our Lord“ and the memoir “A Book about My Brother –
the Writer Konstantin N. Petkanov“, which were published a few years ago by Dimitar Petkanov’s heirs
Imperium Militiae(I)
The most common idea in Romance studies is that Romans, as practical people, didn’t conduct theoretical research on their country or their army, but they gradually built them both. Meanwhile, they reformed and upgraded it, so that they could respond to the challenges of their age. Moreover, the basis of their research was not explicit doctrines, or prior concepts, in fact they used their own, or the experience of others, to find concrete solutions to daily problems. Just as the Hellenic romanophile Polibius (200-120 B.C), in his work Historia, asks the crucial question: ”Is it possible to have such an unreliable man who is not interested in how the Romans, with their unicipal structure, managed to conquer the whole world”? - in the same way the author of this paper, as much as its content allows, humbly and unpretentiously tries to answer the crucial question: “What kind of military structure
created and defended one of the biggest and most enduring empires in world’s history, and what rules governed it”
The dissertation aims to explore some specific features of the two novels “Tobacco” by Dimitar Dimov. One of them is from 1951, and the other, edited, is from 1953. Its editing, known in the Bulgarian literature as the “Tobacco Case”, is a consequence of the intervention of the communist creative dogma. This intervention forms a cliché regarding the author and both of his works.
After the democratic changes, they, as well as Dimitar Dimov, are perceived as victims of this intervention. In the socialism period, the edited “Tobacco” is generalized as a standard of socialist realism. Evaluations – external, politicized and inconsistent with the works. They are a criticism of the communist utopia, elevated to the rank of a scientific prediction based on dialectical and historical materialism. This is the basic discourse for Bulgaria, relevant after 09.09.1944. Quite naturally he presumes that men of art also resist, though through the context of their works. It is directed against the communist ideology and its chimerical utopianism, which can only be followed by people with mental disorders or naive believers in unfulfillable promises and visions. The novels “Tobacco” by Dimitar Dimov, a doctor of veterinary medicine, aim to function as an intellectual vaccine, counteracting the naive and exalted utopianism. This is the basic idea concept of the scientific research

Fundamental physical properties of graphene reinforced concrete.
The global warming has increased with unprecedented levels during the last couple of decades and
the trend is uprising. The construction industry is responsible for nearly 10% of all carbon emissions, mainly due to the increasing global population and the large demand for housing and civil infrastructure. Concrete, which is the most used construction material worldwide, is found in every type of building as it provides long term structural stability, support and its main constituent cement, is very cheap. Consequently, due to the raising concerns of high average temperatures, the
research community started investigating new, innovative methods for substituting cement with 'greener' materials whilst at the same time improving the intrinsic properties of concrete. However, the manufacturing complications and logistics of these materials make them unfavourable for industrial applications. A novel and truly revolutionary method of enhancing the performance of concrete, thus allowing for decreased consumption of raw materials, lies in nanoengineering the cement crystals responsible for the development of all mechanical properties of concrete. Graphene, a two-dimensional sheet of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, is the most promising nanomaterial for composites' reinforcement to this date, due to it's exceptional strength, ability to retain original shape after strain, water impermeability properties and non-hazardous large scale manufacturing techniques. I chose to investigate the addition of liquid-phase exfoliated graphene
suspensions for concrete reinforcement, aiming to improve the fundamental mechanical properties of the construction material and therefore allowing the industry to design buildings using less volume of base materials. First, the method of liquid exfoliation of graphene was developed and the resulting water suspensions were fully characterised by Raman spectroscopy. Then, concrete samples were prepared according to British standards for construction and tested for various properties such as compressive and flexural strength, cyclic loading, water impermeability and heat transport. A separate, in-depth, study was carried out to understand the formation and propagation of micro-structural cracks between the concrete's internal matrix planes, and graphene's impact on total fracture capacity and resistance of concrete. Lastly, multiple experiments were performed to investigate the microcrystallinity of cement hydration products using X-Ray diffraction. In general, all experimental results show a consistent improvement in concrete's performance when enhanced with graphene on the nanoscale level. The nanomaterial improves the mechanical interlocking of cement crystal, thus strengthening the internal bonds of the composite matrix. This cheap and highly scalable method for producing and mixing graphene with concrete turns it into the first truly applicable method for industrial applications, with a real potential to have
